"Are You Threatening Me? Because I Think I Can Take You."

"You will learn to obey me, follow protocol and stay focused at all times"
This 28mm plastic model of Johann Kraus from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is made by “Wizkids. It is model 005 from the Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. “Heroclix” Action Pack. The disembodied ectoplasmic spirit with psychic abilities was created by Mike Mignola in 2003 and features in the “B.P.R.D.” comic book by “Dark Horse Comics”.

In order to ‘cover-up’ the miniature’s pre-paint the entire figure was undercoated with “Vallejo” Heavy Brown. I then painted his containment suit’s body armour with Heavy Sienna before washing both areas with “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. The West German’s head was given a coat of “Vallejo” White and then washed with Pale Grey.
Roger and Liz WIPS - The Homunculus is almost finished but just started painting Sherman's flames
As the “Heroclix” model also came with a small grave marker on its ‘clicky base’ I decided to glue the small tombstone onto a circular 40mm base and use it as an objective marker. This was easily accomplished by simply painting the plastic head piece with “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey, washing it with “Citadel” Nuln Oil” and then dry-brushing it with more “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey.

I have also managed to progress several more of my models of the B.P.R.D., including Roger the Homunculus. I’ve now finished tidying up all the humanoid’s areas of flesh, and painted his body armour. The ‘creature of Alchemy’ now just basically needs to have a couple of washes applied. I have also re-based the ‘Easter Island’ head sculpture which accompanies Roger’s miniature onto another round 40mm base, as I want to use it as another objective marker.
More B.P.R.D. WIPs - Daimio just needs his skin painted, whilst Lobster is essentially finished
Finally I have started to paint the flames on Liz Sherman’s miniature by applying a red wash over an orange undercoat, and completed the brown jacket of were-jaguar Ben Daimio. I’ve also finished tidying up Lobster Johnson’s goggles and face, so the Thirties vigilante just needs to be varnished and have his base flocked with static grass to be finished.

  1. That Lobster fellow looks a nice miniature, nice paintwork on it too.

    1. Thanks Roy. Lobster is best known for combating the Nazi threat to the United States in the late Thirties, so I'm hoping to get him based etc very soon and get him on the tabletop.

    2. I wonder whether Soviet Russia or Communist China had / have comic books with superheroes protecting them from Uncle Sam? Or is the superhero thing really just an American (and British) phenomenon?
I have seen an Iranian kids show doing anti Israel stuff on an episode of Tarrant on TV. It just makes me think that's all.

    3. I don't know myself Roy. Although obviously "Marvel" and "DC Comics" have given both their own super-heroes. Black Widow and Colossus being the big two I guess - and both having defected. But the Crimson Dynamo, Fing Fang Foom, and Red Guardian are pretty big - though they tend to be baddies of the West.

  2. Nice work on Johann Krauss. Gravestones never come amiss and you can never have too many of them. I'm looking forward to seeing how you paint Liz Sherman. A handy tip about painting flames is that fire is always at its lightest and therefore hottest at its core. If you remember this you'll never go wrong.

    1. Thanks Bryan. I do get bored with my oil barrels and radioactive ooze objectives, so a few tombstones certainly won't go amiss - especially for a game involving zombies :-) Thanks for the top tips. First time painting fire and I'm a little nervous to be sure.

  3. Big fan of Hellboy and the BPRD. Really nice job! Had no idea Heroclix were doing them so thanks for the heads up!

    1. Cheers Gordon. Hopefully you can still buy them cheap, but unfortunately as singles I ended up going over the Pond to get a few of them. They're definitely one of the better "Heroclix" sets though.

    2. Can't find any in the UK and a bit pricey with shipping from the US. I shall keep my eyes open on eBay!

    3. Sadly that is the problem Gordon :-( If I see a set though I'll keep you in mind and if reasonable pick it up. No obligation obviously.

  4. Yep some very nice stuff there as always Simon (your repaints are a constant inspiration to me), I must admit that some of these are new to me as I only really know the characters from the Hellboy movies, as I've never read any of the comics. I do like the Lobster Johnson figure though, he'd make a great pulp hero in any game! The gravestone objective maker is a good idea, but I have to say that I'm more impressed with the Easter island head, I do like that idea a lot.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Many thanks Roger. I've posted an issue of "B.P.R.D." over on my comic review blog which features Johann here: http://thebrownbagaeccb.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/one-for-one-bprd-hell-on-earth-new.html and have a few more to come. The gravestone marker was very simple obviously but I much prefer such markers than coloured plastic etc. I agree though that the Easter Island head is a better option :-)

  5. I think Johann has been in the films (the second one I think) though he looked a little different, didn't the line at the top come from him? I'll have to make up some objective markers myself at some point this is one area I've really sadly neglected over the years (naughty me!!).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Yes Johann was in "Hellboy 2" and my quotes are taken from that film. His containment suit was rather different looking too. Just finished painting my favourite objective marker to date... Ben Grimm ;-)

    1. Cheers Finch. A simple enough mini tbh. Very nicely detailed though, which let the washes do all the work :-)

  7. Lobster looks super cool. Very well done there.

The rest of the collection is coming along very nicely. Loving the objective marker pieces too. I need more of this type stuff for my own collection.

    1. Thanks Dai. I should have most of these finished within the next week or so, leaving just the main man... Hellboy, to complete. Big fan of objective markers even if they're just tiny tombstones. So much better than plastic/wooden value discs - though I make mine big enough to hide them under.
