"I'm Tired Of Monkeyin' Around."

"Ba-ba-do-bay-boo-boo-doo-doo..."
These three 28mm metal miniatures are made by “Pulp Figures” and can be bought as code PLT10 Killer Apes from the manufacturer's Lost Worlds and Lost Tribes range. Having superglued them all on to “Games Workshop” 40mm round bases I gave each model a double undercoat of “Citadel” Abaddon Black before heavily dry-brushing each with “Vallejo” Heavy Charcoal. This off-black paint really helped to highlight all the wonderful detail of Bob Murch’s sculpting.
"Lay the secret on me of Man's Red Fire"
I also used this colour to pick out all the dark areas of flesh on the primates’ hands, feet, chests and face. Once dry the Heavy Charcoal was a little too contrastingly stark to the ‘pure’ black undercoat I’d used, so I washed the models with “Citadel” Nuln Oil to help blend it all in together. Finally I ‘picked out’ the fingers, toes and brows with some more “Vallejo” Heavy Charcoal and finished off the ‘classic pulp monsters’ by highlighting their eyes with a spot of “Citadel” Abaddon Black.

In addition I have managed to pay a bit more attention to another of the models from the “Pulp Figures” collection PLT09 Kojar Of The Forest Tribe. Inspired by “Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle” from the late Seventies run of books by “Marvel Comics”, I plan to use this particular black-haired knife-wielding ‘jungle native’ to represent John Clayton, Viscount Greystoke.

  1. Those apes must be quite a size if you've glued them to 40mm diameter bases. I do like your Tarzan figure. A good find, Simon.

    1. Thanks Bryan. I'm afraid I have OCD when it comes to basing my miniatures as I hate any part of the model's base or feet protruding over the edge of my bases, hence the 40mm bases. Though to be fair, one of the apes would have been fine on a normal-sized one. But I thought it'd look silly alongside the other two. Tarzan is also on a 40mm base as his stance is so wide.

  2. The apes look great but am very impressed with Tarzan! I very much like the look of bob murch's figures but, sadly, haven't had chance to purchase any yet. Looking forward to seeing tarzan finished and teaming up with jesus at some point!! :)

    1. Cheers CW. Loads of Bob stuff coming - if I can stop flitting from range to range ;-) I do have plans for Tarzan having picked up a few team-up comics with him and some of "DC Comics" main stalwarts, so definitely a few 'dynamic duo' Batreps coming at some point :-)

    1. Thanks Tamsin. I might borrow that phrase for the title of my Tarzan posting, when he's finished :-)

  4. Those Gorilla's look the business Simon, shame you can't buy them as individuals though as I'd probably only want the one for what I'd have in mind.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I actually plan on getting at least one more packet of these, so I can do one (for a leader) in white, so let me know which one you fancy and I'll put it to one side for you :-)

  5. That would be great, if you really don't mind, you will have to let me know what I would owe you, of course. As to which one anyone would do though I do quite like the one top left and the bottom left. But really make sure you take the ones you want first. Many, many thanks for the offer Simon.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Roger, no worries. I think you mean you like the silverback on all fours. Once I've got Tarzan and his family painted I'll be putting in the order (as I want some natives, dinosaurs etc). No charge, I'm more than indebted to you for the giant space worm :-)

  6. You've done Christopher Lambert proud. :)

Plans to paint up some chimps as well to be his "family" members?

    1. Cheers Dai. Cheetah is already painted and based (Bob Murch only does the one chimp) and I'll be posting him up once I've got some more work done on the other Kojar miniatures.

  8. Great apes dude! Nice to see some gorillas who haven't been shoved through the Nazi experimental war machine. Have you thought about Tarzan and Jesus as a possible dynamic duo!?!

    1. Thanks Bob. They're great models... and I'm glad they assure you that I don't experiment upon all the animals I paint ;-) Who knows what pairing my Christmas game will bring... But I do have some Tarzan team-ups already planned, if I can get him painted without being distracted by all my other projects :-)
