"I Do Not Want To Hurt Anyone, But I Will."

"Let's forget about the pants."
This 28mm plastic model of Roger the Homunculus from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is made by “Wizkids. It is model 004 from the Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. “Heroclix” Action Pack. Discovered in a medieval alchemist’s laboratory beneath the ruins of Czege Castle in Romania, this unusually large “little man” was created by Mike Mignola in 1996 and features in the “Hellboy – Wake The Devil” comic book by “Dark Horse Comics”.

In order to ‘cover-up’ the miniature’s pre-paint the entire figure was undercoated with “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey. I then painted the humanoid’s body armour with Heavy Brown and his groin strap with Heavy Sienna. Both areas were then given a coat of “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Roger’s chest socket and groin chain were painted with “Citadel” Ironbreaker before being washed, alongside his grey-coloured flesh areas, with Nuln Oil. His eyes were picked out with a couple of dabs of “Vallejo” Heavy Ochre.
Cyborg WIP - After a black wash, the model has been dry-brushed with "Citadel" Ironbreaker and then Silver
I’ve managed to spend a bit of time slowly building-up the metallic layers of this rather large model of Victor Stone, also known in the DC Comics Universe as Cyborg. I wasn’t overly impressed with this sculpt to begin with, despite having to superglue it to a 40mm round base because of its size. But now a lot of the model’s detail is clearer I think it’s rather formidable-looking. I’ve yet to start picking out the man’s flesh and electronic ‘beeps and whistles’. But once I do I hope the miniature will really start to ‘pop’.
Hyena WIP - The model has been dry-brushed with red and teeth and claws undercoated black
Having been in the mood for dry-brushing, I’ve also concentrated on bringing out the detail in the Hyena’s red fur. This actually took a while as for some reason my brown Shade wasn't terribly happy in drying between the sculpt's ridges, so I kept having to go back and re-wash areas and then dry-brush them again. I have subsequently finished painting this model as its part of my personal Painting Challenge for this year. But not before I spent some additional time dappling in some skin spots and then trying to make them somewhat blend in.

As an aside if you want to see another re-painter of “Heroclix” then I’d strongly recommend paying Carrion Crow at visit over on his Carrion Crow's Buffet Wordpress site. Amongst other “Wizkids” miniatures on show is an entirely different Hyena paintjob as well as some excellent original conversions.

    1. Thanks Ray. One of the things I like so much about "Heroclix" is the wildly different array of figures they have in the range.

  3. Good work on Roger and Hyena. Both look quite scary and fearsome. You are off to a very good start on Cyborg. Big thumbs up all around from me, Simon.

    1. Thanks Bryan. Just basing Hyena tonight and I think she looks very nice indeed, as do her SLAP were-minions. Cyborg should be much improved once finished as well. Lots on the table at the moment, which a horde of "Zombicide" figures screaming paint me as well ;-)

    1. Cheers Simon. Roger was very simple to paint, especially as he's predominantly grey with a wash for his clay flesh. I really think the Cyborg mini is a lot better than I first thought.

    1. Cheer Michael. Easy one to get on the tabletop, but an essential figure if I want to be able to field the B.P.R.D. in a game ;-)

  7. God your posting so quickly I'm not getting chance to comment on them all! That is some cracking work you've done on Dave the homunculus (I just cant think of him as Roger). Cyborg does look a lot better now you can see the detail on him clearly, I look forward to seeing the finished figure. I was thinking isn't the internet a wonderful thing! where else could a group of grown men have a serious conversation about repainting toy superheroes. These people who like football don't know what there missing!!

Great work as always, Cheers Roger.

    1. Much appreciated as ever Roger. I was actually contemplating trying to post four times a week as I now have a healthy backlog of finished minis, and what with my Batreps and fortnightly painting challenges, there doesn't seem to be enough opportunities to 'get them out there'. As it is I'll be posting up a couple of "Pulp Figures" on Monday as I've already had them out on the tabletop fighting Yeti ;-)

If it wasn't for the internet, where else would you find grown men discussing comics either - and hopefully my weekly "Marvel Two-In-One" reviews are meeting with your approval?

  10. I've not heard of any of these before, but I do like the first two. Not sure about the red fur on "Hyena", though. Is this the way he/she/it was portrayed in the comics?

    1. Hi C6. The Hyena has a few colour schemes. Indeed she's altered quite a bit since her origin and is nowadays far more womanly and yellow-furred with black spots. But the reddish brown version is the one which "Wizkids" went for and that's the one I know (I think its her earliest).

    It all looks great, BK.

    1. Thanks Finch. As you can see Roger was very simple to paint, but just a few more BPRD to go.
