"Pod Carries Infection."

"Winlett seriously ill. Medicaid needed urgently."
This 28mm metal model by “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” is one of two miniatures from the company's code SKU: Deal 87 Spawn and has been painted up as the first of my Krynoid plant-zombies for Zomtober 2015. The model was initially given an undercoat of “Vallejo” Heavy Grey before being haphazardly washed with “Citadel” Thrakka Green and “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Having finished this somewhat ‘mucky’ task I dry-brushed the carnivorous alien with more “Vallejo” Heavy Grey and then painted its ‘eyes’, bulges, crab-like claw and blisters using either Heavy Kakhi, Heavy Sienna, Heavy Brown or Heavy Red. All of these areas were treated to an appropriate “Citadel” coloured wash including Carroburg Crimson, before I applied a final dry-brush of “Vallejo” Heavy Grey.
Plant-Zombie WIPs - Plenty of puss-filled bulges and tentacles yet to still paint...
Having used this figure as my test-piece, I have now started to paint up the remaining seven Spawn miniatures I want to use as ‘Walkers’ for a “Doctor Who And The Seeds of Doom” inspired game of “Zombicide” at the end of Zomtober. These models are at various stages of my painting process but should all be finished within the next seven days.
Supporting Cast WIPs -  Keeler will be the first of my 'Runner' Krynoid-infected zombies
In the meantime, and in order to keep my sanity having ‘picked out’ little more than numerous ‘lumps, bumps and blobs’ this week with my paint brush, I have also based and undercoated some more wonderful miniatures by “Crooked Dice” which I paint during Zomtober. These figures will be used to represent the hapless scientist Arnold Keeler, the mercenary Scorby and the main villain of the piece Harrison Chase.

  1. Just brilliant Simon! Scorby is just a perfect choice, as indeed are the others.

    1. Very kind Sir Awdry. It was impossible to resist such a project once I started researching the minis "Crooked Dice" make, and its clearly going to run well beyond Zomtober before its entirely finished.

  2. No one can accuse of not being original, Simon. Krynoid plant zombies is truly an inspired choice. Your brushwork on them is quite outstanding. I like your WIPs as well. Again, you have chosen well for your cast of heroes and villains. I am very much looking forward to seeing your progress with this project, and of course, the big finale - a Zombicide scenario.

    1. Cheers Bryan. Much appreciated. All the Krynoids lumps and bumps are a little fiddly. But I'm finally getting the hang of them and have decided, for sanity's sake, not to paint-in each and every eyeball etc, otherwise I still wouldn't have the first one finished :-o

    1. Thanks Simon. This project has been waiting in the wings for a few weeks now until Zomtober, so its good to get some paint on these excellent minis and get things going. FIngers crossed for a larger horde to be posted this time next week ;-)

  4. They are fantastic figures...finding it hard to resist the impulse to spend some money...and you're doing a brilliant job on them!

    1. Cheers Gordon. I think they'd look awesome as spectres stalking the wintry wastes of "Frostgrave" ;-)

  6. It's obvious you've been planning this project for a while, Simon, and I'm surprised you've managed to keep your hands off the figures for this long! I'm really enjoying watching your progress on this.
As is typical for me, I've changed my mind, so October sees a project resurrected that is suitably seasonal. You're doing Doctor Who, whilst I'm doing...Scooby Doo!

    1. Cheers Jez. Your support for this project is very much appreciated. I have a second "Doctor Who" project planned as well. But will be holding fire on that until at least December, so I can finish this one, get my "Frostgrave" and "Guild Ball" out of the way, and then enjoy the end of the year with more time-travelling madness... I'll be looking forward to seeing your Scooby Doo stuff :-)

    2. I've got this wonderful project to view, but there's another one to come? Truly, you are spoiling us!
Your comment about using the spawn as ghosts made me realise that with a suitable paint job, these would look like the black slime elementals from the Ghostbusters video game. And the first Scooby post is up, although my version might not be as you remember them...

    3. I'm always prepping projects Jez. My problem is finding the time to start them and then the perseverance to finish them. But the next one is a serious time-consumer so I want to free of as many distractions as I can when I start it. great Scooby Doo gang btw - nice use of the old "Black Tree Design" Doctor Who Companions ;-)

  7. Those spawn are excellent; I really like picking out the "eyes" in contrasting colours. Mind you, I've thought of them more as "lava monsters" rather than plant-zombies. But hey, they'll work for that too :-) .

    1. Thanks C6. These Spawn minis have a myriad of uses, and will almost certainly appear a few more times on this blog in various guises I'm sure.

    1. Cheers Roger. Very much appreciated praise I assure you. Just the beginning sadly, but now I've got something of a factory set-up I hope to get one Spawn finished per day, and still have time to tinker on some other minis along the way.

  9. You're off to a great start, Simon. The red works especially well for the eyes.

    1. Thanks Finch. I'm a bit of a fan of "Vallejo" Heavy Red so it seemed rude not to use a little bit on these Krynoids - even if I do tone it down quite a bit with a brown wash.

  12. The subtle mix of colours on the plant things does set them off as being 'evil' - nicely done!

    1. Cheers Zabadak. Hopefully once I've a few placed together, and they're all slightly differently coloured, they'll give a nice evilly floral effect.
