"Have You Met Miss Smith? She's My Best Friend."

"You must complete your mission for the Time Lords!"
This 28mm metal model of Plucky Assistant B is from code SKU: MINI 206 by “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” and makes for a wonderful proxy of Sarah Jane Smith, the popular plucky reporter who accompanied the Doctor during the 1976 British Science Fiction television program “Doctor Who And The Seeds of Doom”. The miniature was initially given an undercoat of “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey and then had her denim jeans and top washed with “Citadel” Asurmen Blue. The assistant’s shoes and hair were painted using a combination of “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna and “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade.

Having viewed several different paint schemes for her blouse, including some impressive looking plaid patterns, I eventually decided upon a nice simple “Vallejo” White base coat, which I then washed with some watered-down “Citadel” Nuln Oil. I had wanted to try and make the garment look a little greyer than I normally paint. But unfortunately the Shade didn’t pool or dry in some areas as well as in others, so the end result is disappointingly murky in places. Sarah Jane is something of a late Zomtober submission, as I’ll be using her as a ‘Survivor’ for my forthcoming remake of “Doctor Who And The Seeds of Doom” using the “Zombicide” rule-set.
Crossbowman WIP - This plastic model is absolutely covered in weapons, armour and equipment
This month as part of Mo’vember I’m trying to paint enough miniatures by “North Star Military Figures” to use as a warband for “Frostgrave”. My enthusiasm for this project has somewhat increased over the past few days as my “Thaw Of The Lich Lord” ‘Nickstarter’ expansion has arrived. As a result I’m trying to get my original selection of models painted as quickly as I can. Although I’m finding them all rather tough going, as the sculpts are all packed full of fiddly tiny details.

I have also been a little underwhelmed by the quality of the game’s official “Frostgrave Soldiers” twenty multi-part hard plastic 28mm figure boxed set. But have found my fervor for this particular Crossbowman renewed by both adding lots of extra bits and pieces to the original model and through giving the figure some additional heft as a result of supergluing some lead pieces to the underneath of its base; there’s just something about painting a weighty model which you just can’t beat in my humble opinion.
Shug McClure WIP - The miniature isn't too far away from gracing the tabletop
Lastly I have been pottering away on my “Warlords Of Atlantis” mini-project, and have almost finished this cracking sculpt by “Antediluvian Miniatures”. Clearly inspired by the 1976 movie “At The Earth’s Core” and the actor Doug McClure, I hope to have Shug based and varnished very soon.

  1. You have been busy! Sarah looks great and there's that Sienna colour I like so well.

I'm with you on the metal vs plastic mini's. The detail on plastic doesn't seem to be as crisp and the paint doesn't lay on the figure in the same way. I understand the reasons for manufacturers switching to plastic, but I hope metals never stop being made.

    1. Many thanks Anne. I've gone back to trying to concentrate on just two or three minis at a time, and its working out well at present.

With the exception of "Heroclix" I try and avoid plastic whenever I can. But having now weighed down the first of my plastic "Frostgrave" minis I've suddenly found them more fun to paint. Definitely a mind over matter issue :-)

  2. Sarah Jane looks lovely Bk! Great job dude! I'm glad she wasn't your Movember entry.
Really like the extra kit on your crossbowman, proper adventurer. Shug's coming along nicely too.

    1. Cheers Bob. I did have to wait until after my Mo'Vember post to get SJS on the blog :-) The Crossbowman is now a bit further along, and looks rather colourful with all his kit, and Shug is finished, so should be posted up soon enough.

  3. Snap! Did I inspire you to dig out Doug or was it a coincidence? Nice work, either way.

    1. Thanks Natholeon. It is a co-incidence as I dug Doug back out to paint up when the new "Antediluvian Miniatures" Warlords of Atlantis minis arrived. But he then leapt to the head of the queue because Dick Garrison posted his up on his blog this past weekend. So that's three of us who have painted him this week :-)

  4. I love that denim colour you've got BK, mine always comes out to blue (like the £4 kind in asda!) so will be nicking *borrowing* that.... Cheers

  6. Fabulous to see Sarah Jane in the flesh, so to speak. Great job Simon.

    1. Thanks Michael. She is a very dainty figure and to be honest I was a bit intimidated by just how tiny she was. Fortunately my experiment in painting her denim would appear to have paid off.

  7. Fantastic job on plucky assistant B, Simon. Female faces can be tough sledding at times but you pulled it off quite nicely.

    1. Cheers Finch. I actually took a leaf out of another painters book and instead of trying to cram the whites of her eyes on both sides of her pupils, I just dotted them White on one side so it looks like she's looking to one side. It would seem to have worked.

  8. Nice work on SJS, Simon, she looks like she's just stepped out of the TV! And your 'Buckaroo' crossbowman is coming along nicely too - I'm sure you could fit a few more pieces of equipment on him though. ;-)
Still undecided on the Shug figure...not your painting, just haven't warmed to this sculpt yet.

    1. Thanks Jez. I'm rather pleased with how SJS came out. That Crossbowman is well and truly weighed down with goodies I assure you :-) I know what you mean about Shug, or at least his face, as the sculpt is very characterful. But once based etc I think he looks rather nice and its clear who its based upon.

  9. Very nicely done on Sarah Jane. I had no idea the actress had died in real life at a rather young age. :(

    1. Cheers Dai. Liz Sladen's death was certainly a bit of a shock, and came at her time when her TV character was once again very popular with a whole new generation of young fans. Very sad indeed.

  10. Sarha Jane is a masterpiece of painting denim and your crossbowman's extra kit has blended in nicely .
Can't say I'm a fan of Shug's sculpt though and that eye !

    1. Thanks Joe. The denim really was as easy as base colour and dabbing the wash on. Now I'm rather more further forward picking out the crossbowman's kit, I'm really glad I'm burdened him with so much extra kit. Shug does look rather long-faced I admit. Its the heavy eyelids I suppose, Still he's finished now and hopefully son to face some prehistoric terrors :-)

  11. As other have already said, SJS looks excellent! (Still too glossy for my taste, mind, but I've said that before and hey, it's your model).

  12. Hi Simon, seems I'm a little late to the party, and all the best comments have gone! I didn't turn the PC on yesterday as I was trying to get a chunk of this weeks Mo'vember figs done and didn't need the distraction (any excuse not to paint!). SJS is a triumph and as lovely as I hoped shed turn out, sorry to hear your not impressed with the plastic Frostgrave figs, I very nearly took that route myself, but I'm glad now that I didn't.

I too much prefer metal over plastic, and hand sculpted figures over CAD generated sculpts, but I fear they both might soon be dinosaurs heading for extinction.

I cant decide if Doug is supposed to be his "At the earths core" portrayal or his "Warlord of Atlantis" character as his spear should really have three points of "ATEC!" (or perhaps I just being REALLY picky here.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Many thanks Roger. I'm rather pleased with SJS, despite my disappointment with the shadowing of her white blouse. I'm hopeful that I'll enjoy painting the "Frostgrave" plastics a little more now I've added a load of extra bits and bobs, as well as weight, to the minis.

I don't think Doug ever wore a waistcoat in "Warlords of Atlantis", though I am tempted to buy a second copy and replace the spear with a rifle, and maybe an ammo bandoleer.

  13. Lovely paint job on Sarah Jane, Simon. I must buy this figure. I haven't caught the Frostgrave bug but I do admire your crossbowman. Shug is coming along nicely and I must admit I do like the figure, especially his face.

    1. Cheers Bryan. Much appreciated. Hopefully they'll be plenty of "Frostgrave" interest for you once my warband is finished and I turn my attention to the Liche Lord and all the undead horrors he'll be creating for my party to battle. Shug is now finished and should be coming to a posting near you soon :-)
