"Nefarious Members Of A Criminal Cult..."

"...Occult villains steeped in arcane lore..."
These six 28mm metal "Pulp Figures" models come from Bob Murch's "Weird Menace - The Strange Villainy of Pulpdom" range and can be found in either PWM 04 - Evil Hooded Minions or PWM 05 - Evil Hooded Minions II. These purple-garbed goons are my latest entry to the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge's Pulp Side-Challenge, and in addition have scored me enough to complete my 500 point goal for the three-month long event.

To make painting these cultists reasonably quick, all of the models were initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Violet. I then picked out their shoes and trousers with a variety of colours, predominantly using a combination of Heavy Brown and “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade for their footwear, and "Vallejo" Heavy Blue and "Citadel" Asurmen Blue for their slacks.
"...Sinister villains plotting world conquest..."
Any fiendish firearms were painted using "Vallejo" Gunmetal Grey. Whilst the scoundrel with a sword had two coats of "Citadel" Ironbreaker applied to his blade. All of these weapons were then washed with Nuln Oil. The little areas of flesh showing on these shadowy schemers were first given a layer of "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone, then washed with some watered-down "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade" before being highlighted with more "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone.

Finally, despite future plans to have these blaggards lead by the fearsome Crimson Scorpion, another of Bob's terrific models from his "strange villainy of pulpdom" collection , I thought I'd paint one of the minions up as a (sub)leader of sorts. As a result I've decided to spotlight one of the miniatures, a wealthy bounder known as Sir Awdry, who is clearly pointing in the direction of an order he's just given, with a "Vallejo" Heavy Red and "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson hood .
"Horrorclix" WIPs - These large 40mm tall pre-painted plastic models have simply been primed for now
In addition to my six featureless fiends I have been merrily basing and priming a small number of "Horrorclix" miniatures. The formidably large Carnage Bot is another much appreciated gift from the ever-generous blogging-legend Bryan over on "Vampifan's World Of The Undead". I'd never seen this terrifyingly tentacled automaton but have already got plans for the killer robot to represent a Mark III Eradicator in my "Gamma World" project.

Having previously painted an awful lot of Aliens by "Wizkids" I also thought it was about time to start on some 'worthy' opposition, so have started with a 'pilot' Predator piece. Like his 'acid-for-blood' opposition, this 40mm scaled Yautja is rather large compared to many of the other "Horrorclix" sculpts. But that should simply make the finely-detailed model stand out on the tabletop even more.

  1. I'm loving the sinister villains aka the purple klux clan

    1. Thanks Damon. There are some very unsavoury aspects to these hooded fiends I must confess. Although Bob Murch does sculpt them in a cartoony manner.

  2. Excellent job on the Cultists!

  3. You can never go wrong with evil cultists as they are such a stable of so many genres. I've been reading some of the first Vampirella comics from her black and white Warren years and she was forever battling hooded cultists just like your wonderful Bob Murch figures. Thoughts of such an inspired batrep are swirling in my brain!

The Predator ought to paint up really well as he is extremely well detailed. I'm so glad you like that Horrorclix robot I sent you. I had a strong feeling you'd want to use it for your "Gamma World" project.

    1. Many thanks Bryan. The Cultists are very nice indeed and I'm hoping to have a final few submitted before the end of the AHPC; if not then they'll be done soon enough regardless.

I'm over the moon with the robot as its simply superb and should really fit in well with my "Gamma World" stuff and prove a novel automaton compared to all the Cyber-Reavers I've painted recently.

I now own three "Prodos" Predators as well, so it really will be a case of having to get some of these large-scale killers painted up before I get overrun with them.

  4. Wonder if a leader of cultists would snag the robe with the gold trim, just because? Meaning, are you going to freehand some gold trim? :P

Robot is crazy looking. Is it from some film that must have passed me by?

    1. Hopefully you know by now Dai that I'm very willing to accept my limitations with a paintbrush and gold trim is certainly not something I'd attempt with any confidence. A red hood is about as good as it gets for a leader ;-)

I don't recognise the robot from any particular movie myself. But there again I didn't even know of its existence until Bryan kindly sent me a spare one he owned.

    2. The robot is a unique design. As they might say on TV, any similarity between robots living or dead is purely coincidental.

    3. It certainly does remind me of a cross between Doctor Octopus and the Robo-Doc from Judge Dredd (in "2000 A.D.").

    4. Or some Japanese anime inspired creation.

No gold trim... O well. I tried.

    5. There may be some gold on their leader the Crimson Scorpion, Dai. We'll just have to see ;-)

  5. I'm hoping to pick some of the minions up at Salute or some like it, as you well know Simon I've been nothing but praising over the minis and your excellent colour scheme for them and can't wait to have some for 7TV2e gaming.

That 'bot is awesome as is the Pred !

    1. Cheers Andy. Delighted you like the Minions. I may get some more myself - especially as you can easily do weapon swaps with them. I do have a BatRep in mind for them... as they unleash two Hairy Hominids upon an unsuspected New York City Police Force. Fortunately a young Jungle Boy and his Chimp are able to lend a hand ;-)

The "Horrorclix" minis are terrific sculpts, and hopefully I can do them justice. I still need a few more heroes for my "Gamma World" project, and then the BatReps for that should flow too :-)

    1. Thanks Fran. I've a few more to finish off before I've completed all my Bob Murch sculpts but these are a nice start.

  8. The cultists look excellent and your choice of colouring for them is a good choice, but why I wonder can't there be any nice cultists? ( I guessing it's part of their job description to be evil).
    The robot btw looks excellent

    1. Thanks Joe. Bob Murch does have several ranges of Cultists. but as you say none of them strike me as being nice people, just nice sculpts. The Robot is terrific isn't he :-)

  9. Very nice work Simon, those cultists are nice (in a nasty way of course), and who doesn't love a pred?

Star of the show though has to be that robot, I knew I'd seen it before so after a bit of head starching remembered, it was on the "Argry Pipers" blog, he had them fighting Supers in a Batrep.

Great figure that, just up my street.

    Cheers Roger

    1. Cheers Roger. I've a fair few "Pulp Figures" coming to this blog soon. Glad you like the robot and although I have visited "Dead Dick's Tavern" before I haven't seen that particular posting before, so thanks for bringing it to my attention :-)

    1. Cheers Bob. I've some more Bob Murch cultists on the go at the moment, and then it'll be on to some of the "Horrorclix" :-)

  12. Nice to see your cultists finished, Simon. I think I may have seen these also painted emerald green - I'm not sure what colour I'd paint them. If you need some more, the Golgo Island range from East Riding Miniatures (I think) has some nice armed cultists, which are quite inexpensive as well.

    1. Many thanks Jez. I was completely oblivious to that range and now I've spotted a fair few minis I fear I now need to own. I was especially taken by the Zorgls; great Pulp monsters :-)

    2. You're welcome and sorry in equal measures. The Alpha Zorgl is on my wish list for a future Forbidden Planet pulp sci-fi project ( and because it's cool).

    3. LOL :-) The Alpha Zorgl is great isn't it. It was also being sold by "Hasslefree" but seems to be out of stock currently. I was also very taken by the Banana Tyrant, and now have my eye on their Astronauts too.
