The Brown Bag - An English Comic Collector Blog - X-Men, Skull The Slayer, All-New Wolverine & Batman

http://thebrownbagaeccb.blogspot.co.uk
Alongside my love of painting and gaming with superheroes, I am also a big fan of collecting, reading and reviewing comics. As a result for the past few years I have also been running a comic review blog where most days I post up an issue I've recently read which I think people may want to either buy or avoid.

I know that a few of you already regularly visit this site, and indeed have both commented upon "The Brown Bag" and purchased comics or trade paperbacks based upon my recommendations. But I thought for the next few weeks I'd use "Fantorical" as a platform to showcase some of the collections I've recently reviewed in order to see whether I can tempt some more visitors to share in my comic collecting interest.

These 'advertisements' will only be up for a few weeks before I start to weed them out and delete the postings here as I don't want to distract too much from "Fantorical" being a wargaming/painting blog. So if you want to comment here please be aware that your wise words will be gone in a few weeks time. Ideally though you'll see something you like on "The Brown Bag" and give me your opinion, good or bad, over there. Just click the series title you're interested in and it'll take you straight to Issue One, as well as all the other comics I've reviewed :-)

Featuring the return of Nightcrawler after his much-lamented death some years earlier, I've so far only reviewed the first five issues of this 2014 series. But more issues of this title will be posted over the coming months as I cover its entire run.

A Bronze Age of Comics classic, this eight-issue series covers the exploits of a Vietnam veteran and some plane passengers travelling through the Bermuda Triangle and crash-landing back into Prehistoric Times. Full of dinosaurs, aliens and robots, this is undoubtedly one of my favourite comic book titles from the Seventies.

Logan is dead and been replaced by his clone daughter X-23. This ongoing series depicts Laura's first solo adventures wearing Wolverine's famous yellow and blue spandex costume, and features the Angel as well as the Taskmaster and Doctor Strange. I'm hoping to cover the entirety of this series on a monthly basis as and when each issue is published.

One of "DC Comics" flagship titles in their "The New 52" universe, this superbly illustrated ongoing series initially depicts the Dark Knight's battle with the mysterious "Court Of Owls". Cracking adventure and excitement await in one of my all-time favourite Scott Snyder story-arcs for the Caped Crusader.

  1. As one of your regular readers who comments on "The Brown Bag" I can only applaud your decision to pimp it and hopefully attract new followers.

Blogs pretty much live and die by the people who follow and comment on them. Most people I know say that the main reason they carry on blogging is because of the support and kind words they receive from their followers. Sadly, "The Brown Bag" appears to be existing in a vacuum, which is a darned shame. I've learned a lot from it and have bought quite a few TPBs based upon your reviews. I may not like most of the comics you review (we have different tastes, but then everyone has their own idea of what is good and what is bad) but I always find your reviews entertaining and worth reading.

I wish to add my voice to support you in increasing your readership. Best of luck, Simon, from one comic fan to another.

    1. Many thanks indeed Bryan. We'll see how it goes as hopefully there are a few more comic book collectors out there who'll be interested enough to have a look and there are certainly plenty of titles out there these days to cater for all sorts of tastes.

  2. I am going to refrain from reading your other blog for one reason only my missus. She already frowns on my mini collecting and my love of comics would easily drain my wallet. Batman rules and wolverine is just such a dude.

However if you know an online way for me to read F.O.C. then let me know

    1. No worries Damon. There's a daily link to my latest comic review in the top right corner of "Fantorical" to keep tempting you :-) I'd try "comixology" if I was you. They are always doing free digital issues.

  3. Argh! I can do with the temptation. It's taken me a couple of years to reduce my Pull List to BPRD, Hellboy, Star Wars and the Walking Dead...though I have recently added the new 4th Doctor title and upcoming Penny Dreadful. Sigh.

    1. Freudian slip...I can do WITHOUT the temptation. Oh...and I forgot to mention Dark Horse's Conan, too. Sigh.

    2. Thanks Gordon. I do review "BPRD" and "Hellboy" from time to time... and "Star Wars" is one of my regular titles too. I've just bought #1 of the "Fourth Doctor", so hopefully they'll be plenty for you to comment upon. Thanks for following :-)

    3. Huge fan of "Conan" when "Marvel Comics Group" had its licence, and "Kull The Destroyer" too. I've got some of the "Dark Horse" issues too, so I'll be interested in your thoughts when I review them.

  4. Books are more my thing. Fiction or none. Historical British interest types.
That said, however. Wouldn't mind finding a suitable figure to convert into a Ms. Wolverine. Drill and pin some really fine metal 'claws' into the hands. Don't know if I'd have the mask on, or off. Might look cool if I could get such a figure done up and put it with my Catwoman and Phantom.

    1. No probs Roy. I don't think there's an appropriate "Heroclix" model for All-New Wolverine yet. but "Crossover Miniatures" may well do something convertible?

  5. Have always loved comics, though these days I just wait for the graphic novel collections to come out if I buy at all, which is rare as comics purchases would contend with my hobby funds.

Funny though, after my recent trip back to the UK, I brought back some of my old titles that I haven't read since I first bought them - Bishop the Last Xman and the late 90's Warlock (New Mutants character) series. So fun to re-read these.

    1. That is the problem with comics Dai, the cost... and space issues ;-) used to love Warlock when he was part of the New Mutants, and his mad father Magus. The character was a lot of fun. Not myself all that keen on Bishop though... but that's probably because he was never in the team whenever I collected "Uncanny X-Men".
