"... I Wouldn't Go Near That Place."

"They say that when the city was living, they used to take prisoners and slaves there."
This 28mm model of a crossbowman is manufactured by “North Star Military Figures” and is comprised of assorted pieces from their Frostgrave Soldiers twenty multi-part hard plastic boxed set. Carrying a crossbow and dagger, as well as wearing leather armour, the soldier is the second of two such similarly armed men I have within my wizard’s warband, and costs my magic user 50 gold pieces for his considerable services.

Having initially built the figure using some ‘Contacta Professional’ liquid glue for plastics by “Revell”, and then added even more equipment from one of the box’s sprues onto the infantryman’s back, I gave the model an undercoat of “Citadel” Abaddon Black. Once this was dry I slowly worked my way up the model, using various combinations of “Vallejo” paints and “Citadel” washes as I went.
Animated Construct WIPs - Bok is destined to lead a horde of six Scary Statues
The most predominant colours used were “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna for the mercenary’s fur ankle armour, gloves and scarf, Charred Brown for one of his backpack and crossbow, Heavy Brown for his bolt quiver, a rope coil, boots and a side-pouch, and “Citadel” Doombull Brown for his flesh. All of these areas were then given a coat of “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade.

To add some much-needed contrast to my Crossbowman’s rather dour-coloured assemble I used “Vallejo” Heavy Green and “Citadel” Thrakka Green for his upper robe, “Vallejo” Heavy Blue and “Citadel” Asurmen Blue for his leggings, and a spot of “Vallejo” Heavy Red and “Citadel” Carroburg Crimson to represent a large ruby sat upon a second side-dagger he carries. Finally, as I wanted the Moor’s plain bullet-shaped helmet to appear old and battered, I gave it a coat of “Vallejo” Gunmetal Grey before heavily washing it with “Citadel” Nuln Oil.
Re-basing the Undead - This Zombie Trooper has been re-painted before having his new base flocked
Having finished my Crossbowman, and been extremely taken with the sculpting of the Animated Construct I picked up from "Crooked Dice Game Design Studio" at "Salute", I've managed to spend a little time building up the gargoyle's highlights using an old pot of "Citadel" Adeptus Grey, Nuln Oil, some droplets of "Vallejo" White and some patient dry-brushing.

I have also almost finished 'touching up' another of my old “Copplestone Casting” figures in order to help get it back on to my tabletop. This particular figure is from Code FW23 Zombie Troopers, and, like some of my other armed cadavers, was probably painted way back in 2007. This model has actually taken some quite significant work as his boots and trousers had become quite badly damaged before I'd even re-based him.

As a result I've taken advantage of his perilous predicament and slightly tweaked his original all-blue colour scheme by completely re-doing his trousers, and even bloodied-up his rather sickly blue-green rotting flesh. In addition I've painted his belt pouches and holster brown, whilst adding some metallic colour to his unimaginative Chaos Black automatic weapon.

  1. You're making good progress on your crossbowman, Simon. I bet you'll be glad to get him finished.

Using Bok to lead a group of Scary Statues is a great idea. I look forward to seeing them all in action.

Typically, you save the best till last. Great work on your zombie trooper. He's just the dog's dangly bits!

    1. Thanks very much Bryan. These "Frostgrave" minis are very demanding as far as my painting style goes I fear. Still just the Apprentice to go and my warband is done. Bok is already finished, so I'm hoping to have him, and his scary statutes posted up next time. In addition I've not only finished re-painting my Zombie Trooper, but 're-touched' a couple more "Copplestone Castings" zeds too. So hopefully I'll have plenty of Undead on show as well!!

  2. Good progress there Simon, I do like the Copplestone "Zom" and the gargoyle is a smashing figure it has to be said.

You never know you might have your warband finished in time for Mo'vember this year;-) (not that I can say anything about paint at the minute!!).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. I'm delighted to say that all these minis are now finished, as well as a couple of others, and I've just a couple of other things on the go before our June Challenge - hopefully your mojo will have returned by then?

  3. You certainly have a wonderfully eclectic mix on the painting tab;e at the moment Simon, all wonderful, but I'm rather taken by that Gargoyle.

    1. Cheers Michael. I always like to have a few things on the go at once as well y'now ;-) However the gargoyle not only went straight onto my painting table from Salute, but is already finished and flocked, and simply waiting for a posting window :-)

  4. I'm assuming that your next henchman for Frostgrave won't be carrying quite as much equipment? Looking at him, I get a craving to play Buckaroo...
And I'm looking forward to seeing the finished Bok - very nice job so far.
I'm assuming any 'Forgotten Heroes' you create in June will be joining your Cosmic Cube Wars?

    1. Sadly I'm still rather underwhelmed by the "Frostgrave" plastics, Jez. So there will still be plenty of goodies to be carried by my soldiers. I have an apprentice to do for this warband to be complete but already have two double-handed weapon-carrying mercenaries waiting in the wings.

Bok is already finished, and hopefully will look suitably impressive alongside his fellow "Crooked Dice" Scary Statues.

I'm flitting a bit Ref 'Forgotten heroes'. But will probably plumb for some Howling Commandos and G.I. Zombie in the main; all of which may well appear in a future "Cosmic Cube Wars" BatRep ;-)

  5. Great looking minis all around, Simon. Especially like what you've done with the zombie.

Got my first look at that gargoyle on the sculptor's blog just a few days ago: http://meridianminiatures.blogspot.com/2016/05/28mm-portfolio-update.html

    1. Thanks Finch. The "Copplestone Castings" zombies have proven well-worth re-investing my time into in order to retouch/repaint them, imho. I'm a massive fan of Andy May, and own loads of his sculpts. The Gargoyle is undoubtedly a cracking mini and thoroughly recommended. Mine is now finished and should be posted up later this week.

  6. Woo! Lovely work. Liking that the Xbow fellow has brown skin. He's turned out rather lovely. The team as a whole will look great!
The new zombie is going to fit in just fine with his fellow Undead stinky friends. When are we going to see them in a game?

    1. Cheers Dai. As I'm using a Witch (presumably from some dark continent, as my magic user I plan for most of my warband to be brown-skinned, so I'm glad you like him. I've a finished shot of the zed, along with two more coming next time, and still a few more to re-paint/re-base before they feature in a BatRep. But it'll either be Marvel Zombies or Mad Max ;-)

    1. Thanks PulpCitizen. A bit of deck clearing tbh, so I have some room for some other stuff. Lots of different genres etc coming as a result.

  8. I'm mildly surprised that the crossbowman can stand up, what with all the gear he's carrying :-) . Must be a tough guy...

The gargoyle is excellent as well; I wonder what the other 5 scary statues will be?

    1. Cheers Hugh. My crossbowman was certainly a time-consuming guy to paint, and after all that effort probably won't last five minutes on the battlefield. "Crooked Dice" sell the Scary Statues Bok will be leading on the tabletop, if you want to have a peek at what I've previously painted :-)
