"The Bloodletters Form The Core Of The Vast Legions Of The Lord Of Battle."

"They each wield a murderous Hellblade."
These three 28mm Bloodletters have been assembled from the "finely detailed plastic" Bloodletters of Khorne kit produced by “Games Workshop”, and have been based upon "Citadel" 32mm Round bases. Led by my previously painted Bloodhunter, the Blood God's followers are the first of nine (additional) Khorne daemons I need to complete in order to field an allied unit of Slaughter-kin as part of my ever-growing Host of Nurgle for “Age Of Sigmar”.

Having built the models, each 'deadly warrior' was given a double undercoat of “Vallejo” Heavy Red and subsequently heavily washed with "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. Next, the “Warmongers of Khorne” were dry-brushed with “Vallejo” Heavy Red and had their horns, hands, hooves, spines and sword hilts 'picked out' with “Citadel” Abaddon Black.
"As a host, they march as one, in formations with supernatural precision."
The majority of these areas were then blended into the daemonic soldiers' surrounding red flesh by the gentle application of some more "Citadel" Abaddon Black using a "Winsor & Newton" Galeria '00' round brush. In addition, the Bloodletters' Hellblades were undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna before being repeatedly coated in Gold.

The great two-handed weapons, which Hit on a 4+, Wound on a 3+, and are Rend -1, were then all washed with "The Army painter" Strong Tone Quickshade and finally dry-brushed with more "Vallejo" Gold. As these swords are capable of causing a "Decapitating Blow"; which inflicts a Mortal Wound instead of its normal damage on a Hit Roll of 6 or more, I paid extra attention to ensure that their edges were especially shiny.

As a last touch I picked out all of the Chosen of Khorne's teeth with White and their snake-like tongues with Heavy Ochre. These areas were then washed with "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade and Reikland Fleshshade respectively.
Zygons WIPs - The "Doctor Who" aliens have been undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone
One of my few purchases from "Warfare" 2016, was a couple of boxes of Zygons produced by "Warlord Games". This "fictional extraterrestrial race in the long-running British science fiction television programme Doctor Who" has recently seen something of a resurgence in popularity, and as a result the "Into The Time Vortex" 28mm sized miniatures were at the very top of my 'Buy List' for the annual wargames show.

Bizarrely however, I didn't actually end up buying my metal shape-shifting aliens from the "Warlord Games" stall, as the Nottingham-based manufacturer was selling the figures at full price and wasn't offering any show deals - "especially for the Doctor Who miniatures." As a result I simply visited the "Caliver Books" stand right beside them and picked my Zygons up from them for £1.99 less per box...

  1. Looking good mate, while I'm not tempted by the blood letters (unlike the Nurgle lot) they do look good in that red!

    1. Thanks Andy. I think the Bloodletters look awesome on the tabletop and their red colour scheme is a perfect contrast to Nurgle's green. I do have plans for some Blood Warriors and Bloodreavers at some point too. But for now, I've got a few Bloodletter posts to get out of my system.

  2. The Bloodletters are looking good! I'm in two minds about the Warlord Who stuff as I already have a bunch of CD not-Who stuff with a few Black Tree monsters and aliens.

    1. Cheers Gordon. I too was in two minds Ref "Warlord Games" minis, but the Judoon and Zygons convinced me to at least try some out for fun; obviously though I need a Doctor set too though ;-)

  3. By all accounts, the Warlord Doctor Who stuff is intentionally sized differently from "regular", 28mm figures. As such, I won't be getting any. Pity...

    1. It is a pity Hugh, as the sculpts I've so far purchased are fab to paint. But the size difference is quite noticeable imho.

  4. Still not tempted by the bloodletters, although your paintING has done them justice. The Zygons i'm torn on - the sculpts are spot on and they're one of my favourite Who monsters. The size difference isn't quite as important for monsters. Any chance of seeing these next to a regular 28mm figure? That would help me make up my mind...

    1. Thanks Jez. The Zygons are great sculpts imho and I'll try and sort out a photo of them alongside some regular 28mm minis for a later post.

  5. Nice painting on the bloodletters, but they are not for me I'm afraid, never was a big chaos fan sorry.

I like the Zygons they are one of the few monsters who they haven't changed too much (unlike the Silurians), but I'm afraid the "new era!" has killed my love of the good Doctor somewhat.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I too am not a fan of the latest "Doctor Who" TV show. But remember the Zygons from the 1975 story and as a result felt these were a must-buy box. Indeed, I've already painted the lot!!! Subsequently I now have a few "Doctor Who" postings coming, so perhaps I'll tempt you yet ;-)

  6. I was so glad to see in your reply to Roger that you have quite a few Doctor Who postings waiting to be posted. I really love all of the Doctors since the show's relaunch. I see Heresy Miniatures have been forced to stop selling their not-Doctor Who figures, which is a shame as I never got any of them. Of the new Warlord Games I want the 12th Doctor set, just so I can get a figure of Clara Oswald, my all-time favourite assistant. I'm also quite impressed by the upcoming plastic Cybermen and Daleks. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how your Zygons turn out.

    1. If you like "Doctor Who" then there should certainly be plenty of eye candy for you to look at on this blog over the next few months Bryan. I've got a load of "Warlord Games" minis painted and ready to post, plus a horde of "Black Tree Design" and "Crooked Dice" models prepped ready for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. The Zygons are already finished, but the Judoon will be posted first...

  8. Black hands, black feet... some novel ( whose name I cannot remember right now, of course) mentioned that as a warning regarding the undead. I would think it applies to these horny buggers too tho. They look very appropriate to the setting tho - skulls for the skull god?

    1. Cheers Dai. I got the colour scheme from some of the photos used by "Games Workshop" in the "Age Of Sigmar" General's Handbook - and thought they looked excellent (as well as slightly different). Once I've painted a few more up it'll certainly be a case of "skulls for the Skull Throne!!" :-)
