"Marie... Was Immediately Taken With Tom's Muscular Build And Steely Eyes."

"A few," Tom replied as he raised his mallet."
This 28mm pre-painted plastic model of a Vampire Roustabout is by “Wizkids” and can be bought as number 002 from their “Horrorclix” Freakshow range. Originally produced as a blood-drinking monster, who has the in-game abilities of "Scare", "Vampiric" and "Unstoppable (Stamina)", I've actually decided to paint the figure simply as a formidable-looking heavy for a "7TV" Joker gang.

An impressive 39mm in height, and a very generous gift from Bryan of "Vampifan's World Of The Undead" fame, this model was originally super-glued to a regular "Games Workshop" 25mm round base. But having then undercoated the miniature with "Citadel" Abaddon Black, it quickly became apparent the model was somewhat prone to toppling over, and therefore was placed upon a 40mm circular base instead.
Plaguebearer WIPs - These daemons currently need all their sores and wounds painted
The 'enforcer' was then heavily dry-brushed with "Vallejo" Heavy Charcoal, and had his boots and shirt subsequently re-painted with "Citadel" Abaddon Black in order to provide some contrast to his predominantly dark attire. The model's belt and giant mallet were painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. Whilst his crucifix (a strange adornment for a vampire), belt buckle, wrist spikes and hammer's metalwork were all treated to some "Citadel" Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil. Lastly, the roustabout's denim sleeveless jacket was given a coat of "Vallejo" Heavy Blue and washed with more "Citadel" Nuln Oil.

With this month's focus largely resting upon a worryingly large mountain of semi-painted miniatures for my "Age Of Sigmar" Nurgle Host, I have started 'picking out' all the open sores, boils and raw wounds on three Plaguebearers. I'm ultimately hoping to finish at least ten of these wonderfully pustulent plastic warriors in order to double the size of my force's current unit of "loathsome Lesser Daemons". But for now simply want to use this trio in order to become reacquainted with my puss-covered 'palette' before applying the formula to a resin Great Unclean One.
Service Robot WIPs - The Mummies now need to be dry-brushed with more "Vallejo" Iraqi Sand
Finally, I am cracking on with a unit of ten "Black Tree Design" service robots as part of my "Doctor Who And The Pyramids Of Mars" side-project. These Egyptian Mummies will form the backbone of an invasion force primarily lead by Sutekh the Destroyer, and, once submitted, should provide me with some much-needed points in the Seventh Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge.

  1. Another stonkijning post Simon, love the heavy with the males and great to see some more Plaguebearer action. The mummy looks like a good way to rack up the points too, I like your thinking.

    1. Thanks very much Michael. The roustabout was a great gift from Bryan, and as you say ten Mummies equals 50 AHPC points :-)

    1. Thanks Andy. I have six Plaguebearers to practice on before the Great Unclean One, so hopefully I'll be back in the puss-zone before I need to tackle the big guy ;-)

    1. Cheers Phil. I use the brush on version, so put a few drops on a palette and then slap it on.

  5. Really nice paintwork on the Vampire roustabout/Joker's henchman, despite the awful gloss varnish (yes, I know, you love it, I hate it!).
I even think your Plague-bearers look cool despite my negative opinions about Games Workshop and the armies of Chaos.
Once more, you have uncovered more Doctor Who villains I know nothing about. I like them a lot better than the last lot you showed. All in all, a terrific post!

    1. Glad you like it Bryan, and many thanks indeed once again for gifting it to me :-) The Plaguebearers are a great model imho, and 20 on the tabletop should be quite the formidable-looking unit. Hopefully I'll get you up-to-speed with all things "Pyramids Of Mars" over the next few posts :-)

  10. "Wonderfully pustulent". Two words not often used together, but very fitting.

I really like your continuing work on the Plaguebearers, Simon.

    1. Cheers Finch. With the majority of my "Heroclix" and "Black Tree Design" distractions concluded for this month, there should be plenty more Nurgle-stuff on show soon...

  11. Pyramid of Mars is another of my all time fave DW stories, and the Mummies are great baddies, your painting of them is top notch as always, though as I'm sure you know there isn't a great deal of robot under those wrappings!

The roustabout is another smashing fig, he'd make a great Joker henchman.

The plaguebearer chap is nice too.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks very much Roger. Glad you like the Roustabout, as he's one of my fave "Horrorclix" minis, and the Mummies are great models too. Lots of Plaguebearers coming this month as well.

  12. Usually the quotes you use I recognise, but not being a big reader of Mills & Boon, this one I'm not familiar with. ;=)
The roustabout has come out really well, although I probably would have used a more 'Joker=ish' palette to indicate his allegiance = maybe a purple shirt or something.
And who doesn't love robot mummies? A nice restrained paint job that has really brought out the detail.

    1. Jez, the quote is purportedly from the "Horrorclix" card for the roustabout - at least that what the website suggests :-) I did consider a white-face etc to tie in with the Joker but then saw how the "Knight Models" Hell's Angel Hammer Heavy was painted and thought it tied the mini down to a specific range. Whereas this one can still be a vampire if needs be :-)
