(Lead) Mountain Musings - "Boromite Work Gang" March 2018

Boromite Work Gangers WIPs - The alien miners have an incredible amount of armour
This month's themed attempt to try and reduce my potentially insurmountable collection of metal, plastic and resin miniatures is to simply focus upon a unit of five Boromite Work Gangers which I desperately need to finish in order to finally complete my 500 point Scouting Force. I've been occasionally beavering away at these "Beyond The Gates Of Antares" sculpts for a few months now, and actually managed to complete the squad's first figure at the end of January. However, since then I haven't really found the motivation to get the other "Warlord Games" models tabletop ready...

Admittedly, part of my reluctance to tackle these extra-terrestrial miners is due to their incredibly time-consuming detail, but the recent loss of their leader (who most probably fell into my bin unobserved) has meant that I simply couldn't face painting them until I had obtained a suitable replacement. Now that has been done, along with a few extra personnel, I plan to have the "genetically engineered" workforce varnished, flocked and fighting for their survival within the next few weeks.
Putrid Blightking WIPs - The warrior has yet to have his bronze weaponry weathered and dry-brushed
Of course that doesn't mean I'll be turning my gaze away from the remaining Putrid Blightkings I require in order to field a five-strong unit of the "enormous, bloated warriors", nor the four tiny Nurglings I plan to use as wound markers for some of my larger "Age Of Sigmar" Chaos models. I want these miniatures to be finished sooner rather than later in order to be able to field a 'genuine' 1,000 point Nurgle Host and then begin work building up the strength of my Khorne forces.

There's also a lot of new models on the horizon for this rule-set too, with the Daughters Of Khaine army looking set to include harpies (Khinerai Heartrenders) and serpent-bellied warriors (Melusai Blood Sisters); all of which are going to be nearly impossible to resist purchasing. Plus I've been sat upon a boxed set of Kharadron Overlords for far too long, so its time to start thinking about working on a sky-fleet of iron-clad warriors, all "aboard fantastical machines of war armed with powerful aetheric weapons."
"Since its founding, the Black Templars have campaigned on a never-ending crusade."
Finally, I couldn't help but notice that the Nottingham-based company are about to embark upon a new subscription service involving "Warhammer 40K" which appears similar to their 2002 "Battle Games in Middle-Earth fortnightly magazine (published by "De Agostini"). As seems to be the way with all these offers "Warhammer Conquest" thus includes a number of deliveries per month "with minis and gifts included with each issue." Of particular interest to me though is the prospect that the publication will teach me how to play Warhammer 40,000 "in bite-size chunks"; something I enjoyed doing when learning their "Lord Of The Rings" tabletop rule-set almost two decades ago.

Hopefully this investment will help me finally get some use out of the "Dark Imperium" boxed set I bought last year, as it has already encouraged me to seek out my old Black Templars and re-grit/flock them. Admittedly, these members of the "second Founding chapter derived from the Imperial Fists" are on smaller bases than the Adeptus Astartes stand upon these days, but the models date back to a time when I 'protected' my figures using PVA glue as opposed to varnish, so I didn't want to risk needing to repaint any of them if I damaged one whilst re-basing them...

  1. Plenty going on here Simon, but I'm especially glad to hear the Boromites are on the move again, but sad to hear they lost their boss - move the bin further from the paint table ;-)

I hadn't heard of Warhammer Conquest, but I tend to steer clear of ALL part-works. No matter how 'shiny' they are my brain automatically calculates the total cost, and then I have to sit down for a bit ;-)

    1. Many thanks Greg. The bin has indeed been moved. I'm sort of hoping he'll show up again, perhaps when I do a bit of rummaging around he'll appear.

"Warhammer Conquest" is indeed going to get expensive, especially once the (so called) free gifts are out the way. But I'm hoping the regularity of stuff will keep my enthusiasm high, and keep pushing me along. We'll see :-)

    2. I've just had a look at the website, and if these are on the high street I'll definitely try and grab a couple of copies of issue one at £1.99 - 3 "Mu-reens", 3 pots of paint and a brush for that price is just too good to miss :-)

    3. Absolutely, Greg. As with all these offers, the first couple of issues are always super vfm, imho, in order to hook you in :-)

  2. Sorry to say, Simon, but none of these figures grab me very much. But there was one piece of news that made me sit up and take notice.

I have been looking at this new army with more enthusiasm than I have ever felt about a Warhammer army! The new figures are simply gorgeous. Morathi is just pure awesomeness! But whilst I would love to buy a complete Daughters of Khaine army, I'm holding back because a) it would cost me far too much money to get everything I want; b) I don't want to take on another big painting project when I have so many other projects on the go: and c) I don't have any opponents to play Warhammer with and I'd rather not play it solo, even though I could. However, if you start collecting this army, my willpower might just fail!

As for "Warhammer Conquest" I'm in total agreement with Greg - will the overall cost be worth it? I'm doubtful.

    1. Sadly Bryan I don't think the Daughters of Khaine Starter Set (approx £40) is that great a starting kit either, as its just the old models. I'm hoping a new one with the latest models will be out at some point, and that'll be a good jumping on point then.

Time will tell with regards to "Warhammer Conquest", and I certainly don't intend sticking with the magazine once the vfm drops - as it inevitably did with "LoTR" once the issues had covered the rules etc.

  3. A great set of minis this post. I am sorry about the loss of your Boromite leader as I know you spend a lot of time and effort on them, but I am glad you are back on the case getting that last squad done. The game looks quite good too. I love the Blight kings and it is great to see these warriors of Burgle taking shape. A battle in the Realm of life against the Sylvaneth would be awesome! The new 40k does look like a good game with its slimmed down rules and that 40k magazine is tempting, but I am not sure I could take the pace of 1 a week! Good grief I paint at a snail's pace as it is, but you can't argue that the 40k models are great! Totally agree with Bryan, the Daughters of Khaine look awesome and if you get them I can't wait to see what you do with them! Great read.

    1. Thanks very much Undercoat. The last of the Blightkings are almost done (well, last for now), and another Boromite is almost ready to be posted too. I'm hoping "Warhammer Quest" will help push my "Warhammer 40k" knowledge along quite quickly, so expect to see my 1,000 pts Chaos Army in action quite soon ;-)

    2. Can't wait to see the Blightkings as a unit and the Boromites as an army! Don't make me succumb to 40k please! Your enthusiasm is infectious.

    3. "Can't wait to see the Blightkings as a unit and the Boromites as an army" - neither can I, as it'll mean I've finished the damn things and can move on to a different genre ;-)

  4. Nice work on the Boromites Simon, even through the loss. The Blightkings are coming along well, and now dabbling in 40K as well ! so many projects mate, what is the regular price of the magazine going to be ?

    1. Cheers Dave. The "WH40K" magazine will be £7.99, so its a £32 investment per month, once the introductory prices stop. I'm looking at it as an investment into a game I've always wanted to play - so for the sake of a box of their minis I'm going to give it a try :-)

  5. 40K is no longer for me I am priced out of the market with all GW products. However I do wish you well with it and shall enjoy looking at your work as it progresses.

    1. Thanks Clint. Once the magazine start arriving I'm thinking of a doing a weekly review to show what's on offer and how I'm getting on with the minis.

  6. Nice work on your nurgle warrior and the boromite, watch out you don't disappear down a 40K wormhole!

    1. Ha Hah! Cheers Iain. I'm hoping I've enough other projects to keep me on the straight and narrow. I've already got some "Heroclix" BatReps ready to showcase their latest rule-set :-)

  7. Lovely brushwork Simon! I really like your metal and gray colors - I have the hardest time getting metal to look "right" and your Blightking is tops :)

    1. Thanks very much Ivor :-) The Blightkings are time-consuming minis, but well worth the effort on their detail imho.

  8. Lots of pretty stuff to look at here Simon, though luckily nothing that makes me want to pull out the cheque book, all three factions are extremely well painted, and best of luck with the part-works Warhammer mag.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I'm hoping that once all three of these genres are finished then they'll be plenty of BatReps relating to them to come, and "Warhammer 40K Conquest" should provide plenty of interesting minis as I explore the 41st Millennium.

  9. The Boromites and Blightthings have come on a lot - surely you must have the finish line in sight now - just a quick spinr to finish them I reckon!
It seen#ms the evil empire money for has found a new way to wrest money from the unwary - thanks for the warning !

    1. Thanks Joe. I have one and a half Blightkings to finish, and three Boromites - then both factions will be done - for now. Not tempted by "Warhammer 40,000 Conquest" then?

  10. All looking good. By the sounds of it you will have most the forces for AoS. I do like the look of the Sky Dwarves fun times ahead.

    1. Cheers Simon. I'm not sure about owning all the factions for "AoS", but I'd certainly like to own some minis from them all for some Chaos vs Order battles :-)

  11. Those Boromites look like they are rocking out playing space-guitar solos! :) Maybe they are celebrating the loss of an unloved leader?

First AoS, now 40K? This blog is fast becoming a haven of GW projects. Next up, Bloodbowl, Epic and Battlefleet Gothic!

Templars in pva? Never heard the like. Crazy - didn't that stuff cloud up?

    1. Ha Hah, I'm certainly considering doing a "Warhammer 40k Wednesday" weekly posting once the magazine arrives, Dai. I think that'd be rather popular tbh. I'm doubtful as to "Bloodbowl", but "Epic" - definitely :-)

The PVA was awesome and only clouded if you put it on too thick. Its a really good protector, as the Black Templars show. But eventually I moved to Varnish instead for my gloss look.
