Doctor Who - "The Seeds Of Doom" - WIP - Part Two

Krynoid WIPs - These plant-zombies have all had their lumps and bumps 'coloured in'
With ‘Zomtober 2015’ fast approaching its second weekend I’ve spent the majority of my time over the past few days plodding away on a horde of Spawn miniatures by “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” so I have plenty of figures to represent the Krynoid from the 1976 British Science Fiction television serial “Doctor Who and the Seeds of Doom”. Although the models themselves haven’t been too difficult to paint as their sculpts are just great, these miniatures have proved somewhat tedious to finish on account of my plan to ‘pick out’ their seemingly never ending amount of blobs, lumps and bumps with a variety of greens, browns and a somewhat gory dark red.
Krynoid WIPs - Having finished painting the aliens, I have started applying some washes to them
Having now finished this stage of the process for the seven plant-zombies, and tidied up around the edges of several of the carnivorous creatures’ ‘eyes’ with more “Vallejo” Heavy Grey, I’ve now started applying a three-stage wash approach to each of the monsters. Not only have these inks helped blend in some of my ‘touch-ups’ but hopefully they’ll make these infected creatures look all the more gruesome prior to their final green dry-brush.
Krynoid WIPs - I've finally started working on the first of Harrison Chase's infected security guards
I have also started work on painting the pilot piece for the six Failed Experiment miniatures I plan to use as Runners (when I try to replicate the Timelord’s six-parter using the “Zombicide” rule set at the end of the month). This particular figure is of one of Harrison Chase’s estate security guards, who has been contaminated by the alien Krynoid and is ‘turning’ into one of the extra-terrestrial’s plant-zombies.

  1. The "plants" have come out really well, they certianly do have a eerie look about them and are very 2other-worldly" looking - very impressed.

    1. Many thanks Zabadak. They just need some dry-brushing and varnishing and should be finished. :-)

  2. Very alien, aren't they? Most "monsters" just look like a man in a rubber mask, but not these...

    1. Cheers C6. I've certainly done my best to try and ensure you can't see where the masks and gloves join the actors' wetsuits ;-)

    1. Thanks Gordon. They're simple to paint tbh, just time-consuming and a bit fiddly around the 'eyes'.

  4. Excellent work on the zombie plants; I know that feeling of dread when there are lots of things to pick out separately and repetitively, so much respect! :)

    1. Most kind Pulpcitizen. All the itty bits are done now though, so just some dry-brushing and flocking to be done and these alien fiends can be posted up over the next few days. Phew!

  5. You have definitely nailed the colour scheme for your Krynoids, Simon. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to seeing how your "Runners" turn out.

    1. Cheers Bryan. I was thinking of you as I was applying my red wash to each model, and kept thinking, 'Nah... I'll add another splash here and splosh there, just to keep the gore-hounds happy!!" ;-)

  6. Nice work as usual Simon. I like the infected security guard too.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. I must confess that I'm rather enjoying putting together all the 'infected' as the "Crooked Dice" sculpts and conversion parts are very well done indeed. Hopefully I'll have a few ready for tomorrow's proper Zomtober posting.

  7. Coming along nicely, Simon. One of the creepier Tom Baker stories, up there with The Horror of Fang Rock and The Robots of Death. I remember having similar 'detail' issues when repainting a Dreamblade Gutsoup Golem as a plant creature, but then decided just to go for shades of green, with successive washes and dry-brushing to bring out the detail. Might be worth looking one of these out, as they do make good plant creatures and the figure is about 40-50mm tall, so might be a good proxy for a 'fatty' or 'abomination', if I have the terminology right.

    1. Cheers Jez. I've had a look at that Gutsoup Golem and it does indeed look like a very suitable proxy indeed. As you say, loads of detail to be picked out on that beauty :-) I was planning on using Harrison Chase and Scorby as the Fatties - bizarre I know - as they're the main villains of the piece and will come flanked with two Krynoids. I was also planing for a considerably larger Krynoid to be painted for use as the Abomination. But now I've seen the Gutsoup Golems, and bought three, I'll be taking your top advice and painting them up for my Fatties just as soon as they come through the door. Thanks very much my friend - I think ;-)

    2. No problem, Simon. I'll probably include my version in next week's Scooby Doo posting. Only a handful of monsters this week due to lack of time. Probably be at least double next week!

    3. Thanks Jez, I'll look forward to seeing what you do with yours. It should give me some ideas before mine arrive.

  8. The time and tedium has been well spent Bk! The krynoids have turned out beautifully. Your plans for runners and fatties sound very interesting. Really looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

    1. Thanks Bob. Just basing the first batch up now for this weekend's 'official' posting. The runners are now all glued together, I've added a seventh, and now just needs gritting and undercoating before I get cracking on them for next week's submission. Its all go at the moment :-)

    1. Cheers Robert. I must confess to finding myself wilting somewhat with all the eyeballs etc. But now they're done and the glue is hopefully set upon my 'infected' my enthusiasm is back with a vengeance!!

  10. Spending the extra tim on the Krynoids is definitely paying dividends, they look superb. I wonder if Crooked Dice will ever consider pricing a 'not' fourth Doctor, especially given his popularity amongst their key demographic. I know that I would buy one.

    1. Thanks Michael. I'm not picking out of their detail as I'd be there forever. But certainly highlighting the main ones and a scattering of the other lumps and bumps seems to be working out well.

I think the Doctor Who world of "Crooked Dice" is over now "Warlord Games" owns the rights and are bringing out their own officially licensed rules and minis. But take heart as I understand that they've already announced they'll be doing all of the Doctors as one of their first products - so if they're half as good as CD's Jon Pertwee then we should be in for a real treat, and like you, I'll be getting myself a Tom; if not at least one of everything else too ;-)

    2. I think you might be spot on there Simon, perhaps I need to pick up a few 'not' characters from Crooked Dice before Warlord Games get into their stride.

    3. I'd certainly recommend anything sculpted by Mister Veingart, as his stuff is just awesome - and many are hoping he'll be the sculptor "Warlord games" chose for their range.
