"Rage Then, For A Hotheaded Fool."

"You may let yourself out in the same way that you let yourself in, whatever that might have been."
This 28mm metal miniature of the “Guild Ball” Union attacking midfielder Rage is made by “Steamforged Games Limited”. The model comes in three pieces, with the opportunist’s arms being cast on a separate sprue. As at the time I didn’t fancy pinning such thin(ish) limbs to their respective sleeves, I ended up simply changing the model’s pose a little and gluing them tight to the player’s sides.

Rage is the second of my submissions for this month’s Mo’vember challenge; a facial hair themed event that Dick Garrison and myself started last year and which Carrion Crow is also participating in this time round. Please do visit their respective websites to see how they’re both getting on.
Union WIPs - Still plenty to do on these two 'mismatched pair of mercenaries'
As the sportsman’s main ‘kit colour’ was going to be red, I undercoated the entire assemble with “Vallejo” Heavy Red before picking out his meat cleaver blades and long knife with “Citadel” Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil. I then applied a coat of “Vallejo” Heavy Brown to the maverick’s dead rabbit and gave the slaughtered mammal a wash of “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. As I wanted Rage to be somewhat reminiscent of Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting from the 2002 motion picture “Gangs Of New York” I treated his “Vallejo” White waist sash to some dabs of “Citadel” Bloodletter, Carroburg Crimson and Agrax Earthshade. I then used some “Vallejo” Pale Grey on the midfielder’s White shirt.

In addition to finishing Rage I have also been pottering with my formidably-sized model of Fangtooth and the far more delicately-sculpted Decimate. I haven’t really given the Monster much attention since June but have finally finished the centre back’s trousers, including his stitching and also applied a “Citadel” Badab Black wash over most of the chains wrapped around the behemoth’s waist. This means I’m finally in a position to start working my way around the model’s numerous areas of flesh… I was actually considering using Decimate as a Mo’Vember entry as the illustration work for the Winger depicts a lithely masked-man supporting a wonderfully thin moustache. However, the miniature itself is clearly of a woman without any such facial hair, so “Steamforged Games Limited” presumably changed their minds as to the player’s sex in-between the original concept art and the sculpt’s casting.
Evil Space Dorf WIPS - Judge Chico, C.A.T., Khan and Fodder
Lastly I have finally begun painting these fantastically characterful Evil Space Dorfs made by “Oakbound Miniatures”. Designed by Chico Danks of “Oldhammer On A Budget” blog fame, I immediately ordered Judge Chico, C.A.T. the Cyber Goat and their two accompanying henchmen as I thought they’d make the start of a wicked Cursed Earth mutant gang for my Judge Dredd to face. Considering that Khan ‘n’ Fodder also come with beards then it also struck me that Mo’Vember would certainly seem an apt time to slap some paint on them; especially as I hear the company will soon be releasing some additional models to this range.

As a complete aside I am once again participating in this year’s Secret Santa, run by Ian over on “The Blog With No Name”. As a result I’ve been asked to give some suggestions as to what ranges I might like my gift to come from, so would just to say that any of the minions from “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” would be greatly appreciated or a couple of Mechs from “Ral Partha Europe”. Failing that anything at all… as I’m always looking to get into a new range or genre ;-)

  1. Great start Simon, I do like that Rage figure, and good to see you've finally finished him. Fangtooth too is a massive super sculpt, and the lady looks a good'un too.

Those Dorf's are interesting, I've not seen them before, shame the undercoat hides the detail a bit, but it'll make seeing the finished figures all the better.

Jez has really got you twitching on Battlemechs hasn't he!

    Oh no another new project!!!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. The "Guild Ball" minis are nice. But they're just too detailed for my liking. The Evil Space Dorfs are great, and hopefully my next WIP posting about them will show off a bit more of their detail. There's nothing wrong with a new project now and then you know ;-)

  2. Lovely work on Rage and nice start on the rest of the others. I am reminded by the large fellow of Baymax from Big Hero 6 for some reason only an obviously more human version :)

    1. Cheers Simon. Yes, Fangtooth is an incredibly portly fellow indeed. I'll certainly be pleased to have him finished one of these days.

  3. Rage has turned out really well and is a fine candidate for Mo'vember.

Fangtooth is a mighty brute and I hope you don't wait too long to finish him.

I had never heard of the Evil Space Dorfs before but I approve of your plan to make them a Cursed Earth gang.

    Good work all round, Simon.

    1. Thanks Bryan. I'm delighted with the way Rage has turned out. Fangtooth is slowly taking shape... slowly. The Evil Space Dorfs should be coming to a Cursed Earth BatRep near you soon ;-)

    1. Cheers Michael. I am well pleased with him, and he's destined not just for the "Guild Ball" pitch either I assure you.

    1. Thanks Gordon. He's a great sculpt, and despite a high price, worth it imho.

  6. Lots going on Bk! The Butcher looks great, fine work dude! Fangtooth really is a beast of a mini, isn't he. The Evil Space Dorfs look very interesting, looking forward to seeing more progress on them.

    1. Cheers Bob. I like to keep busy as well you know ;-) Fangtooth is undoubtedly a formidable model to paint. Hopefully the Evil Space Dorfs will be finished quite soon as they're pretty small (and cute!!).

  7. What on earth (or beyond it) is an Evil Space Dorf? I thought that I was pretty good on the list of manufacturers of miniatures, but I'd never heard of Oakbound before...

    1. I'm delighted to have found one you've missed C6. I too was completely oblivious to their range until Chico drew my attention to them. Plenty there to admire too and their service is very quick imho.

  8. So I reckon your secret santa should buy you some of the biggest naval models they can find. Lovely big ships, with plenty of wood decks and canvas sails. Or even better, some metal behemoths that require plenty of grey variations in the colour scheme.

...What was that? You said no thanks. Spoil sport :))

    1. Tbh Roy, I really don't mind. Last year's Secret Santa took me off to buying/painting a veritable horde of Federated Security (Blake's 7) which I wasn't planning on doing at all. I'm sure this year's will divert my attention just the same. Never done tall ships before so I'll certainly be visiting your site to help me to get to grips with the basing.

    2. Yarkshire Gamer does some cracking walk-through posts on his blog, on painting and basing ships. Very useful and informative, if you ever need advice.

    3. Thanks Roy. I'll do just that if I ever stray into those waters :-)

  9. Great job on Rage. The more relaxed pose with the arms lowered doesn't sacrifice anything in the name of durability/ease of construction. Looks very natural.

    1. Cheers Finch. Much appreciated. The arms sitting at the sides certainly help me pick the mini up without worrying about snapping his arms off!! I actually much prefer the pose too.

  10. Nice to see Rage finished, Simon. How many of the team have you got left? And Fangtooth looks like he'd make a good Ghostbusters villain...hmm...

    1. Thanks, I have four more "Guild Ball" left to finish - five if you include the second model of Greede I need to paint, which is magnetised to Avarisse's chest. Fangtooth is good for so many games but he's rather expensive - I only bought him on a discount.

  11. Like you need more minis added to your unpainted pile....

Rage looks like what's his face from Gangs of New York - I approve of this wholeheartedly.

    1. Cheers Dai. I did try and make Rage look like Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting so I can use him as a proxy.

I've always got room for some extra miniatures in my quest to own a little bit of everything ;-)
