"Monstrously Strong And Nigh Unkillable..."

"...The Rotbringers are some of the Plague God's greatest servants."
This 28mm Plaguebearer is one of the plastic multi-part models which can be assembled from the sprues found within the “Games Workshop” Plaguebearers of Nurgle boxed set. Part of my ever-growing Host of Nurgle, this unit champion is known as one of the Plagueridden, and as a result “makes two attacks rather than one” with his plaguesword during a turn of “Age Of Sigmar”.

Having assembled the model as per the boxed kit’s instructions, the model was initially given an undercoat of “Vallejo” Heavy Khaki before being copiously washed with “Citadel” Thrakka Green. The “profoundly disturbing” daemon was then dry-brushed with more “Vallejo” Heavy Khaki and had details such as its horn, collection of trophy heads and plaguesword base-coated with “Citadel” Abaddon Black. As the leader was heavily ‘blessed’ with the mark of Nurgle’s Rot, its festering sores organs were painted with “Vallejo” Heavy Red and washed with “Citadel” Carroburg Crimson.
Plaguebearer WIPS - These daemons now need to be washed and dry-brushed before having their pimples 'picked out'
In addition the blighted soul-stuff of a mortal had large areas of its body and limbs wantonly washed with copious amounts of Thrakka Green and Agrax Earthshade and Carroburg Crimson. As a final touch all of the monster’s zits were ‘enriched’ with a combination of “Vallejo” Heavy Ochre and “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade. Whilst it’s corroded and battered iron blade was dry-brushed with “Vallejo” Heavy Charcoal.

The Plagueridden’s prize, a collection of three severed heads destined to be “stuffed with daemonic spores and flung by Plague Drone riders into the heaving mass of battle”, were predominantly painted using a combination of “Vallejo” Heavy Warmgrey, Heavy Red, “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade, Agrax Earthshade and Carroburg Crimson. Although both the eye and mouth stitches were ‘picked out’ using “Vallejo” Heavy Brown.
Lord Of Plagues WIPs - The Hero having been primed, washed, dry-brushed and base-coated
Having completed their champion, I have managed to progress another two members of my first Plaguebearer unit, by picking out all their sores and innards, as well as tidying up their putrid green skin. These Tallymen now require the haphazard application of some “Citadel” Shades before they’ll be ready for the ‘highlighting’ of their spots and pimples. I have also pushed myself in order to get the second row of my first Nurgling base into a similar position.

Finally I have assembled, primed, washed and dry-brushed my force's Lord of Plagues. This single hero model carries an enormous plague-ridden Great Blade which provides three (3+ To Hit) Attacks at -1 Rend. Stepping away from the photographed colour-scheme presented within the “Grand Alliance Chaos” rule-book, I plan to give my army’s (initial) General the same ghastly-green skin as my Plaguebearers and Nurglings, as well as terribly rusty armour.

  1. I moan about GW a lot and hate the destruction of MY Warhammer universe (steady Andy...) but damn do they make great models. That Plague Lord is lush, simply brilliant can't wait to see him with his paint on.

    1. I've always liked the Lord of Plagues Andy, so much so that I now own a second copy ready for converting to "Warhammer 40k", should that rule-set ever get streamlined...

  2. Isn't that strange, I'm not so keen on the "Plague lord" (sorry Andy), too spikey and I don't like the silly axe (the lower part of the blade would have to come off for me). I'm sure however that you will paint him up a treat!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. The axe might look a bit silly Roger, but it would seem to be rather powerful in the game, and has loads of detail to pick out in order to make it look disease-ridden. I do take your point though that if a blade was that rusty and pitted, it would surely snap!?!

    2. Oh dear I seem to have started something now, sorry. I haven't been in a Games Workshop for what seems like years now. I very nearly went in to the one in Chester yesterday, but on the way I spotted a comic book store three doors down I never knew existed and ended up going in there instead.

P.S. no post on my site this week as I've been out with the family every day this week and haven't even started anything (not even a WIP to post).

P.P.S while I'm here seems Jez is out for Mo'vember this year, are you still in and if so are we going for a theme or just "Muzzy's" on anything?

      Cheers Roger.

    3. Its not a problem Roger. These days people tend to love or hate "GW" stuff, and currently I love it!!

I was wondering where my weekend "Rantings" had gone!?! Shocking. letting real life get in the way of my hobbying pleasure. Oh the cheek!! ;-)

Sad news, but not unsurprising considering he's been so busy lately with real life (and is much missed if you're reading this Jez!!). I wasn't planning on a theme, just facial hair as usual. I already have a few minis in mind :-)

    4. Oh Jez isn't busy!! the traitorous dog has defected to the other side, and is doing Dinotember with Mr Awdry. (-:

      Cheers Roger.

    6. I know and after we were so nice to him too, just show you cant trust anyone (even that Michael Awdry, he acts all sweet and innocent.....)

      Ha ha!!!

      Cheers Roger.

    8. Glad to hear you got your G-man, as for Jez we should of realised what a bounder he was when he let us down with the teas at Salute.(only kidding Jez, that's it now I promise!).

      Cheers Roger

    9. I'm planning on doing a chibi month at some point soon; especially as I intend to give the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge a miss this time round and concentrate on a few little projects instead.

  3. Games Workshop has done so much good and so much bad for the hobby. yet when you see a well painted GW figure you just have to like it.

    1. Thanks Clint. I wasn't going to paint any of the Plaguebearers command figures until the end. But this Plagueridden just begged to be painted just as soon as I primed and washed him... A bit like the Plague Lord is now doing ;-)

  4. I'm with Roger regarding your Plague Lord but I'm sure he'll look a lot better once you finish painting him. The huge axe could "appear" to be rusty and pitted but Chaos magic keeps it deceptively sharp. Just a thought.

    1. Oversized weapons are always a bit like Bovril in my books Bryan, you either love'em or hate'em. I usually like them, and certainly have always liked this sculpt. I think once he's painted, they'll be so much else to look at on him, that the blade's size won;t matter so much, and as you so wisely say, it's probably held together by Chaos Magic :-)

  5. Still looking superbly gruesome...though I'm afraid I'm a bit less keen on the oversized axe and spiky shoulder pad of the Lord of Plagues.

    1. Thanks Gordon. I'm afraid you're really not going to like my Blightkings then... They're even larger than the Lord of Plagues.

  6. The Plaguebearer Champion looks suitably icky. Excellent stuff. :)

  7. So ugly and yet so beautiful

  8. They certainly have varied the types of troop type available since Nurgle was introduced, as I seem to recall there only being four troop types - plaguebearers, beasts of Nurgle,Great Unclean Ones and...the other one. I may have a browse on their site...

And what's wrong with choosing to paint dinosaurs instead of people with moustaches? I have rather a lot of dinosaurs, even with gifting out my spares, so I thought I ought to give 'em a lick of paint...you could always choose to join Dinovember this year instead...

And you'll get your damn teas, curse you!

    1. There's loads of different Nurgle units these days, Jez, and hopefully I'll be able to give you a good taster over the coming weeks :-) I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing what you come up with for Dinovember, and have been tempted to join Sir Awdry in the past. But Mo'vember is something of a tradition now :-) See you at next year's Salute ;-)

    1. Cheers Joe. I'm starting to get close to finishing off my Plaguebearers unit now, so expect some more WIPs of some of the other models that I intend to form part of my Nurgle Host.

    1. Thanks Greg. Much appreciated. Early days for the Plague Lord but my first base of Nurglings is hopefully nearly finished. Boy there are a lot of the little fellows to paint!!

  11. All of this continues to delight on this end mate. Really like how you're painting the axe-champ in the same scheme as the plaguebearers, as though he's just a bigger and fatter version, worthy of that nasty axe.

    1. Cheers Dai. I didn't want to detract from the Plague Lord's nurgleness, and thought he'd look better as part of the host rather than a pinkish horror. Besides I'll be doing a Khorne Host too, and wanted to keep the pinks and reds for them.
