"Boromites Can Be Found Within The PanHuman Concord..."

"...And upon the many diverse worlds of the Determinate."
This 28mm metal model of a Ganger is manufactured by "Warlord Games" and is one of three miniatures which come as part the Boromites' Overseer Squad blister pack. Phenomenally detailed with all the extra-terrestrial's lumps, bumps and reflex armour, the plasma carbine-carrying soldier's main role is to act as bodyguard to my Scouting Force's Commander, the Overseer.

Initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey, the figure was washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil, before having a layer of Chaos Black applied over all of its weaponry. The model's armour was then slowly 'picked out' with "Vallejo" Heavy Ochre, as I wanted to try and imitate the colour scheme used for the mining creatures as found within the "Beyond The Gates Of Antares" rule-book, and subsequently washed with "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade.
Boromite Ganger WIPs - The Overseer's bodyguard is slowly having his numerous pouches washed
As I didn't like the predominantly black pouches and weapons depicted within the vast majority of Boromite figure illustrations, I decided to step away from "Warlord Games" 'official' palette, and instead paint the miniature's pocket-bags with a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Brown and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade, whilst shading its "Citadel" Ironbreaker primed plasma carbine with Nuln Oil. As a final touch I highlighted the firearm's power source using some "Vallejo" Heavy Red and "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson.

With my 500-point force's 'pilot piece' completed, I have now started painting the second of the Overseer's bodyguards, and discovered this sculpt to be even more complicated than the first. Indeed, in many ways I might have been better off choosing an easier to paint faction, such as the black-armoured Isorians, or all-red Algoryn Army, rather than one which is clearly going to take a lot of time and patience as I am forced to 'pick out' all of its unfathomable armour in yellow...
"Frostgrave" Sci-Fi Terminator WIPs - The model now simply needs some washes to be applied
Fortunately, I have also been progressing a small number of "North Star Military Figures" figures to use as Tomás de Torquemada's infamous Terminators in a game or two of "Mutants And Death Ray Guns" by "Ganesha Games". To be honest this "Nemesis The Warlock" project has proved something of a disappointment of account of the quality of some of the models' sculpting, and as a result my intention to 're-enact' some of "2000 A.D." comic book series character's most memorable scenes, has somewhat stalled.

Admittedly, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the plastic "Frostgrave" Cultist torsos I've selected to use as the basis for my villainous Termight Warriors. But the same can't sadly be said for the quality of the resin pieces found within the Nottingham-based company's Cultist Sci-Fi Accessory Pack; which have caused me no end of grief trying to determine where a wrinkled sleeve stops and a hand begins...

  1. I do like the look of the Bormomites, and that is excellent work on the one you painted there Simon. :)

    1. And sorry to hear of the frustrations about the definition of the resin parts; something I have encountered myself with other ranges.

    2. Thanks Leon. I think my black lining technique shows up a bit more in the photo than real life, but hopefully still shows all the minute detail the Boromites have.

    3. I do wish I hadn't ordered quite so many of the "Frostgrave" Sci-Fi accessory packs. But hopefully once I've painted a few I'll get used to their sculpts.

  2. The more I see of the Bromides the more I like, great job Simon.

    1. Cheers Michael. I'm admittedly looking forward to getting these minis finished, and getting them on the tabletop.

    1. Thanks Simon. I'm hoping in two months time they'll all be over and done with, and the bulk of my force finished.

  4. Frustrating work when the sculpts are too complicated, I end up uncomplicating them i.e. I paint over the detail....

Shame about the terminators as well, the project had promise and I do love Nemesis

    1. Cheers Andy. I'll be slowly getting there over the next few weeks on the Boromites, and hoping that once I get to the regular troops the detail will somewhat drop. The Terminators should be all posted over the next couple of weeks, and then I have some interesting aliens to use with Nemesis.

  5. Nice job on the first piece Simon, and good progression on the second.
With the Terminators, before undercoating scrape a little resin away using a sharp scalpel. Start from the hand and scrape towards where you want the sleeve to start, this will make it more defined

    1. Thanks Dave, and terrific advice on the Terminators. I'll be doing just that!!

  6. Oh dear, Simon, I do sympathise with you. the Lederhosen wearing Boromite has turned out really well But you must surely be regretting your decision to buying into this faction, especially if the next batch are even more complex than the first!

And yet more frustration with the Terminators. They look okay in the photos but you'd know better seeing them in the flesh.

    1. Sadly I'm stuck with the Boromites, Bryan, and some of their specialist units are corkers imho. Until then though I'll be struggling along, with a few distractions. I'll be posting up the first of my finished Terminators soon, so fingers crossed you'll like it :-)

  7. O! That's bloody unfortunate to hear about the sci-fi bits being pants and all. :( No chance to just email them and see if there might be a crisper detailed pack available? Like Bryan says, they look cool in the pic?

You were as frustrated painting the Frostgrave characters, but got through and they looked ace at the end! Stick with the Boromites - just do bits here and there as you feel it. Surely there's no time limit to get them done by?

    1. I don't think the bits are miscast, Dai, I just think that they're a little hard to discern once undercoated, and Dave's suggestions sounds like a winner to me :-)

I have a game of "Beyond The Gates Of Antares" planned for the end of May, so there's a bit of a deadline, but a perfectly doable one. Just started working on the Overseer himself...

  9. I think the Boromide has painted up really nicely (still not that keen on the figures though, sorry). I like the idea behind the Sci/Fi cultists/ terminators shame you are having such problems with the sculpts, I could see them popping up in your "Mad Max" project too.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I do think the "Nemesis" Sci-Fi cultists would work with "Mad Max"... now that would be a cool team-up ;-)

  10. Those Boromites are definitely growing on me...I was wondering what they'd look like painted orange, as in Rocky Grimm's Space Rangers! I do like what you've done with yours - really does highlight what nice figures they are.

    1. Thanks Jez. I think the yellow armour and grey hide work rather well together. These Overseer bodyguards are swines to paint though imho, and I'm really hoping that some of the lesser powerful Boromites aren't quite so complicated to paint.
