(Lead) Mountain Musings - 'Oldhammer 40K' May 2017

Necron Raiders WIP - The robots have been primed and washed, and the Scarabs based
This month's randomly themed attempt to try and reduce my overwhelming collection of metal, plastic and resin miniatures will see me painting up a handful of old Second Edition "Warhammer 40K" Necron Raiders and a couple of accompanying Scarabs. I actually recall picking these models up second-hand at a car boot sale in Aldershot quite a few years ago, and believe I also still own the figure which came attached to the front cover of Issue 217 of "White Dwarf"; albeit I don't seem to be able to currently find that particular 'freebie' within my lead pile...

With the rumoured imminent arrival by "Games Workshop" of Eighth Edition "Warhammer 40k" I have no intention of using these "merciless killers" for any gaming in the company's "dystopian science fantasy universe". But did think that the all-metal miniatures would prove to be interesting proxies for a faction of the Robot Army which continuously fights to rule Mega-City One's Undercity in "Judge Dredd".
Overseer WIPs - The Boromite Commander has had his armour, equipment and wiring finished
Indeed, these "Oldhammer 40K" sculpts contain some incredibly Egyptian-themed detail, and along with their green Gauss-Flayer Guns, should make a colourful change from the usual all-silver palette I usually apply to my automatons. In addition they should give me plenty of opportunity to use the Robot rules in "Mutants And Death Ray Guns" by "Ganesha Games".

My preoccupation with this "Citadel" project will not, however, blind me to my need to continue working on my 500-point Boromite Scouting Force for "Beyond The Gates Of Antares". Indeed, alongside my Overseer I have started assembling, basing and priming more miniatures from a second box of Boromite Gang Fighters.
Boromite Gang Fighter WIP - The majority of these alien miners have had their armour started
Ordinarily, I don't tend to try and paint my figures in batches or an assembly line. But, as my goal is to paint up twenty of the heavily-armed panhuman miners by the end of May, I thought I would once again try my hand at the (somewhat arduous) technique and see how I got on with ten of the plasma carbine-carrying soldiers. It is the Seventh Age of humankind after-all...

With the majority of my Cybermen painted for "Doctor Who: Exterminate!", I have begun assembling the six "genocidal warriors" I need to field two Dalek Patrol recruitment cards. These plastic multi-part models have proved rather troublesome to assemble, and there's a definite knack to ensuring the front-facing panel fits in-between the two side pieces.
Dalek WIPs - The "powerful armoured fighting machine" has been primed, washed and dry-brushed
I certainly found it prudent not to completely follow the instructions found within the "Guide To The Time Vortex" by leaving the flank pieces slightly ajar from one another until after I had 'popped' in the central panel over the Time War Dalek's eye stalk. Fortunately though, what the twenty-four pamphlet does provide is a relatively straightforward painting guide to help get these "creatures of hate" onto the tabletop fast.

Admittedly I don't think drenching "the whole miniature with Strong Tone ink wash" should be the penultimate stage of the process, especially when a couple of the earlier phases include 'picking out' the "eye stalk rings and lights with White". But the "Vallejo" Brass 'dry-brush' has certainly helped bring out all the detail on what appears to be a genuinely "highly detailed" plastic miniature.

  1. Wow I love those Necrons Simon, great job Sir. Good to see the Daleks on the paint table and fiddly assembly noted if I ever decide to add some to the collection.

    1. Thanks Michael. There's a nice lot of Egyptian touches to the Necron minis which I'm hoping to really bring out with some gold, blue and red. The Daleks certainly aren't as much fun to assemble and paint as the Cybermen imho.

  2. Necrons Necrons a a aaaah, oh I love Necrons <-- *hums that old song and advert from childhood*

    .. or was it Onions?

Super job Simon. Those Daleks are coming on a treat too.

    1. Cheers Hils. These are proper Necrons in my books too. I was rather pleased to find them in the drawer drawn for this month's painting subject. Hopefully the Daleks won't be too far behind the Cybermen.

  3. The old Necrons had some nice detail that has been lost on the later versions, they should as you say Simon add more detail for you to paint. The overseer is progressing well, I too don't normally do batch painting, but have done so in the last week to clear some new additions I succumbed to (I blame the Triad).
The paint scheme on the Dalek does look effective

    1. Thanks Dave. I really do like the old Necrons and these are nicely cast too imho. I look forward to hearing more about these new additions you've painted up too :-)

The "Warlord Games" painting guidance for the Time War Daleks is a little odd tbh, but having put the steps in an order I prefer, I can see them being an effective way of getting the minis on the tabletop quick - which is what I want.

  4. What a great post, Simon, with so much to admire. I, too, have those old school Necrons and like you, I much prefer them to the new ones. I never thought of using them in Judge Dredd (indeed, I'd forgotten all about them) but I think it's an idea with a lot of merit.

Batch painting is something I do all the time and is essential in reducing my lead and plastic mountain of unpainted minis. These Boromites are coming along just fine.

As for the Daleks, you kept the best till last. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on these and the new plastic Cybermen from "Warlord Games".

    1. Cheers very much Bryan, much appreciated. I'm certainly hoping to expand my "Judge Dredd" "Mutants And Death Ray Guns" campaign with the Necron Raiders once they're finished.

I'm planning to try and post up a picture of the Boromites as I make my progress through them just to keep showing myself (and others) how well they're coming along, and the time it takes to get them done.

Glad you like the Daleks. I've some Dalek Sec WIPs ready for next time, as I get ever closer to finishing enough minis to play "Doctor Who: Exterminate!".

  5. Good work so far on the Boromites :) Never been a fan of Necrons though.

    1. Thanks Chico. I'm not churning the Boromites out as quickly as you are though!! Hmmm... surprised you've no love for the original Necron Raiders; wonderfully chunky sculpts imho.

  6. i think i managed to paint up the freebie Necron and that was it! batch painting is my bane and I find it switches off my mojo almost straight away which is why these days i prefer skirmish wargaming...

the Daleks look great Simon, I'm pretty sure if I hadn't splashed out on 14 of the Black Tree versions I would be dipping into my tired post Salute! wallet again....

    1. I really need to go digging for my missing 'freebie' Necron Raider, Andy, but I know I won't find it until after I've finished these guys and forgotten how I did them :-)

I certainly think "Warlord Games" Davros & Dalek boxed set will be a great buy when its released, as these minis do paint up rather nicely imho.

  7. Lots of character to the old Necrons. Certainly prefer them to the newer stuff. As for the Daleks...coming along very nicely!

  9. its weird isn't it, Necrons are now reeeeaaaal old school, but I actually got out of Warhammer 40K about the time these first came in: Necrons were late to the scene weren't they, back then lol. Which reminds me, I`m sure have a good half a dozen of there hanging about in an attic box somewhere. Painted too I seem to recall.... AND some of those Necron scarabs too.

Love how you`ve done yours Simon.. and Daleks woohooo^^?

    Lovely-jubbly

    1. Thanks Steve. Hopefully both the Necron Raiders and Daleks will be finished soon. They've both got quite a bit of detailing still to go, but will be all the more colourful for it when they're finished ;-) As you say, Necrons were indeed late for the WH40K party, but arrived before Tau as I recall?

    2. Yes that's right Simon, Necrons then Tau :)

    3. Yep, the Tau have only been around for a measly sixteen years :-)

  10. STOP PRESS: A packet of disembodied simian (and other) heads just arrived by postman to my doorstep. Oh wow Simon there`s LOADS of them, a lot more than the 8 I imagined. Thanks mate, really, really appreciated. Now my contribution to our Planet of the Apes can really get going.

  12. I was going to say that the old Necrons were much more characterful than the new ones, but as everybody else has said that I won't bother.

Those Daleks are really nice much better than the later iDaleks, Wow! do things really get progressively worse each time they are replaced or am I just getting old and grumpy?

    Cheers Roger.

    1. I certainly don't think the iDaleks were the hit Steve Moffat thought they'd be, Roger, so I entirely agree. I certainly thinks its telling that they quickly went back to the earlier versions in the following stories.

  13. I remember when White Dwarf gave away that mini. Had mine too up until I moved over here... No idea what happened to it - Ebayed maybe? Still, it's fun to see those old minis and fun that you are painting them up. I think they'll fit in just fine with your Dredd games; their older cartoony sculpts fit with the Dredd minis style better I think.

Boromites are looking better. I think the addition of the lighter grey for the leader's skin helps him pop lots more. Good luck with the batch painting!

Hexterminate! At least that's how we used to say it on the playground when I was 8 and living in Billericay. :)

    1. Cheers Dai. Still a lot to do on all these minis, but there's plenty of variety to keep me going :-)

I think the Necron Raiders will be great for "Judge Dredd", so I'm certainly looking forward to getting all their colourful Egyptian adornments painted.

Still lots to do on my Boromites but the Overseer is at least now finished, and I'm not sure whether my Daleks will have that Essex-inflection or not ;-)

  14. Good stuff, Simon. A nice mix of old and very new figures there. I did like the Egyptian vibe of the Necrons and have to admit being tempted by their flying pyramid warship-thing - just because it looked so cool.

And your Daleks are coming along nicely to. As I've got 'old school' and New Paradigm Daleks, this type of Dalek is the only one I'm missing, so I may have to get some. I also have plans afoot for a 28mm version of Davros - just waiting for the relevant parts to arrive.

    1. Thanks Jez. I might pick up some more of these old skool Necron Raiders next time I see them at a show, as it'll be nice to increase their number a little bit for "Mutants And Death Ray Guns".

"Warlord Games" will be releasing a Davros model soon, complete with a sprue or two of the Daleks :-)

  15. Although I never really understood what the Necrons were, I was nevertheless intrigyed by them when they first came out, so I'm lookng forward to seeing you using htem.
Boromite Commander coming along nicely, I think I;m now convinced by them too...
... and the seemingly eternal Daleks are a great enemy - I even have a pack of five plastic ones (somehwere)!

    1. Cheers Joe :-) I love the Egyptian detail on these old necron Raider models. So much better than the neon green of the latest incarnations imho.

Glad you like the Overseer. Still a swine to paint though!! And who doesn't like the Daleks. It'd be great to see those five gliding through some of your scenery posts ;-)
