"That Which Was Known Was Forgotten..."

"...And anarchy threatened all the children of the then Free Companies."
These two 15mm miniatures come from the "The Ion Age" code IAF022 Muster First Patrol (Pose Four Muster Patrol Trooper, Anvil 888, Kneeling and Pose Eight Muster Patrol Trooper, Prone), and were part of a much larger order I picked up in person at "Salute 2014". The figures are actually designed to be used with the company’s “Patrol Angis” rule-set, but I’ve based them together in order to form a small heavy-weapons team for a home-made set of rules loosely based within the early “Rogue Trader” era of the “Warhammer 40,000” Universe.

Both soldiers were resultantly undercoated with two layers of “Vallejo” Black and had their uniforms ‘picked out’ with Heavy Bluegrey, as well as shaded with “Citadel” Nuln Oil, in order to try and replicate the palette of the Imperial Guard way back when their '"hard plastic" boxed set made its debut in January 1989. I then applied a little “Vallejo” Gold and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade to any visible epaulettes and cap badges.
"The Ion Age" WIPs - Both the Red Adder Combat Car and Orange Adder Combat Car have been primed
I picked out the troopers' bare hands using a combination of “Vallejo” Heavy Skintone and “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade, whilst treating both soldiers’ stowage, alongside the prone patrolman's boots, to a coat of “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. Finally, I applied a base layer of “Citadel” Ironbreaker to their the mortar-man's impressively sized Anvil 888 and a piece of equipment strapped to the bottom of his observer's backpack. Both of these areas were subsequently heavily washed them in Nuln Oil so as to dull the metallic paint down somewhat.

In addition to adding some extra infantrymen to my 15mm 'Imperial Guard', I have also been progressing a pair of Prydian Vehicles for them to use. However, unlike the Black Adder Combat Car I've previously been painting, I decided not to permanently glue these transports down upon their "Battlefront Miniatures" Large "Flames Of War" bases until after I have finished 'picking out' all the metal struts and axles on them with "Citadel" Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil.
Badrock WIP - The single cast resin piece has been based and primed "Vallejo" Heavy Red
Unsurprisingly, this much easier access to each conveyance's underside has actually caused me to see and pigment even more of each armoured car's belly than on the previous resin four wheeled light vehicle I've worked on, but in arguably half the time. As I also wanted to 'show off' the Adder hull's great versalitity I have armed one with a Moth rotary cannon in a turret mount and the other with a twin Anda 60mm Missile Pod.

Stepping away from science fiction momentarily, I recently was super-lucky enough to take possesion of an awesome resin sculpt depicting the "Image Comics" super-hero Badrock (formerly Bedrock) from a private collector. This terrific miniature has immediately gone to the front of my paint queue and already been primed in his costume's predominant colour ready for finishing over the next few days...

    1. Thanks Simon. I'm slowly working my way through my back pile of "The Ion Age" but have a lot more to paint yet :-)

  2. Nice work mate, nice to see that you too paint the axels on your vehicles like I do, even though they are never seen! (OCD it's a terrible thing ain't it!).

Never heard of Badrock (or Bedrock), but that is a mighty fine miniature!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. LOL Roger!! You're spot on - it is OCD!! I so much more enjoy painting vehicles with a very low ground clearance, like the Adder Combat Lifters and their hovercraft skirts.

Badrock is an awesome sculpt imho, and really does dominate the 40mm base I've plonked him on. Hopefully I can get him finished soon and team him up with a certain orange-rock "Marvel Comics" super-hero ;-)

    1. Cheers Leon, I'm hoping to have a 15mm BatRep up soon having finished these additions to my 'Imperial Guard' force, and Badrock is an excellent mini imho.

  5. Well the only Bedrock I know has Fred Flintstone in it! I have looked him up and the mini looks pretty good, so congrats on getting him. Your Ion Age stuff looks ace. Nice read as always.

    1. Cheers Undercoat. Plenty more 15mm coming as I try to progress this month's modest challenge. I'm really pleased with Badrock (whose name was changed because of the Flintstone connection) and hope to have him finished soon :-)

  6. You're really churning these Ion minis out, great detailing on such small minis.
Bedrock (Badrock) us of course, a character I've never heard of but I'm guessing at your excitement getting him!

  7. Finally managed to find some 'spare' time to post some comments, so apologies for not commenting on the previous posts. However, as the subject matter has been the same subject, I can cover off them all with this one.

I like the idea of using the Ion Age range as proxy 40K figures. I looked at this range to see if I could do 15mm Star Wars, as I do fancy a bit of SW tabletop action, but refuse to pay Imperial Assault prices. Not 100% sure if they're suitable, but as I have other irons in the fire at present, this project will have to wait.

And interesting to see a Bedrock/Badrock figure, even if I wasn't a huge fan of "Youngblood". I assume that its has been sculpted with feet? lol

    1. Good to hear from you, Jez, and no worries about not previously commenting; that's never something I expect from anyone visiting my humble blog, as I appreciate some stuff people will like and some stuff they won't :-)

Hmmm... "Star Wars" 15mm eh? I'd perhaps look at some of "Ground Zero Games" stuff if "The Ion Age" doesn't scratch that particular itch. Although I haven't forgotten about sending you those minis, just been adding to them with some additional spares I'm finding as I scour my collection :-)

Badrock has his usual clubbed feet, which will form part of his all-red costume. I hope to have some more WIPs of him posted soon, so you can more clearly see what a great sculpt he is.

  8. Those armoured cars look suspiciously based upon the lovely WW2 Humber chassis?

    Good stuff mate.

Not familiar with the red bloke, but he has a certain Thanos quality about his visage...

    1. Thanks Dai. There’s definitely a WW2 vehicle feel to “The Ion Age” resin, which I really like. Badrock is an awesome sculpt, and I’m certainly hoping to get him finished before the month is out.
