"The son of an Irish convict, he was the younger brother of the bushranger Ned Kelly." |
Having been partially-painted many moons ago, and seemingly primed using some "Citadel" Abaddon Black, I determined that the crook's long coat had probably been base-layered with "Vallejo" Dark Grey, so resultantly shaded the area with plenty of "Citadel" Nuln. Unsurprisingly, the jacket was then dry-brushed with (more) "Vallejo" Dark Grey so as to bring out all the creases, pockets and buttons.

"Alternative Armies" WIPs - Three 15mm Legion Pioneers |
Lastly, I treated both Dan's 6mm thick iron armour and single firearm to a combination of "Vallejo" Gunmetal and "Citadel" Nuln Oil. As with the gang's infamous leader, I felt the criminal's "homemade armour" would look better without any highlights, and simply left it be. I did though manage to 'pick out' Kelly's pistol butt with a little "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and dash of "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade.

"Athena Miniatures" WIPs - Early days on a trio of Russian Spetsnaz |
I have also started making some progress on the first of thirteen 28mm metal Spetsnaz figures I bought from "Athena Miniatures" at last year's "Warfare" 2024. I'm actually a 'man down' as the set is supposed to contain fourteen models. However, after a quick dialogue with the Swindon-based firm's owner John Caboche, the missing Russian should soon be winging his way to me - along with some additional (final) reinforcements I have ordered to round off the Apocalypse Survivors project...
Another great part of minis!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michal. Much appreciated.
DeleteGreat work on Ned Kelly's gang Simon, and if they aren't marked I guess you can easily choose which one is which. Nice progress on the Chaos marines, and also the Spetsnaz, they seem have a lot more detail to pick out compared to the standard Russians, so hopefully wont take too long.
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave. The other three members of Kelly's Gang are now finished too, so it shouldn't be too long before they're posted up. Hopefully the 15mm Legion Pioneers won't be too far behind either. The Spetsnaz have loads of straps and armour plates to pick out - fortunately in black though - so will be quite a bit more involved than the NBC Troopers - and I have twenty-eight of them to paint too. LOL!!
DeleteGood stuff all around here Simon.
ReplyDeleteWhat's next?
Thanks Dai. I'm hoping to get some of the Spetsnaz actually finished, and then next month I'll be looking at my Wargames Foundry Napoleonics again.
DeleteThe Kelly gang would definitely be fun minis to paint, but I'm too cheap to order them 🙄. Glad you're enjoying yours! This one looks great.
ReplyDeleteCheers Allison M. I've finished the whole gang now, and aim to complete the other gunfighters I've recently found in my stash. LOL!!
DeleteYour bucket head looks awesome! Great job. I am ashamed to say I know nothing about Ned Kelly and his gang beyond his name and his predilection for iron mongery, so the background is interesting. It is amazing how different those Soviet troops look to their long coated comrades, but different silhouettes is very welcome to differentiate elites etc. Another interesting read.
ReplyDeleteThanks Undercoat. I should have the remaining three members of Kelly's Gang posted soon, as they're finished - as are the 15mm Legion Pioneers. I was actually a bit surprised at the attention to detail on the Spetsnaz, as I was sort of hoping they'd be similarly quick to paint as the Russian NBC Troopers were.
