"They sometimes possessed claws instead of standard manipulator arms." |
This 38mm scale "easy-fit plastic" model of a Dalek is made by “Warlord Games” and can be found within the Nottingham-based company's Davros & the New Dalek Empire Expansion Set. Designed to be played with with their excellent "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" "fast-paced tabletop miniatures game" I've actually painted this particular miniature up as a member of the Emperor's Personal Guard; "a Dalek organisation made up of Daleks dedicated to protecting the Emperor Dalek at all costs."
Created by Terry Nation for the 1965 BBC Television story "The Chase", in which a pair of them were destroyed during the Daleks battle against the Mechonoids on the planet Mechanus, this superior version of the "hostile alien life-forms" was super-glued onto a 40mm lipped circular stand before being undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna. I then gave the Skaro mutant a double coat of Brass, liberally washed it with "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade, and finally gave the "elite Dalek" a heavy dry-brush of more "Vallejo" Brass.
Draconian WIPs - The three reptilian humanoids have had their legs layered and shaded |
With the basics finished, I subsequently picked out the guard's eye stalk, control arm and multi-range variable power destructor with some "Citadel" Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil, and additionally painted the Dalek's audio scanners with "Vallejo" White and Pale Grey. As a last touch, I used some "Citadel" Abaddon Black to coat the pepper pot's fender and dome.
Having previously painted two of these veterans of the Last Great Time War, this third figure finally allows me to field an Emperor's Guard Recruitment Card on my "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" battlefield. These "Unique" Daleks are understandably significantly more powerful than the game's basic Dalek Patrol, utilising the traits "Marksman" ("may reroll any or all Combat Dice when shooting") and "My Stuff [Upgrade: Elevate]", alongside their improved Shooting and Close Combat statistics.

In addition I'm at long last finding the time to return to the first three of eight Draconians I want to get on the tabletop as part of my ongoing Dalek Invasion of Draconia campaign. These reptilian humanoids are packed full of detail with their pimpled skin, flowing green robes, gem-stones and gold adornments, but should still hopefully be fairly straightforward to finish over the next few weeks.
One of my main motivators this month to get so many of my "Warlord Games" "Doctor Who" models finished is the manufacturer's announcement of their imminent "Ninth Doctor & Companions" boxed set. This expansion not only contains Christopher Eccleston's incarnation of the Time Traveller, but also Rose Tyler, Captain Jack Harkness, Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler.
At this rate you will have consultants not doctors!
ReplyDeleteLOL, Dave :-) With two Tenth Doctor sets, the 11th, 12th, and now 9th coming out, there certainly is plenty of choice. Plus there's the 1st, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th Doctors availiable as resin singles too :-)
DeleteNice work on the Dalek. I think that Rose is one of the nicest i'very seen from the Warlord DW range
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon. I have some more Daleks to come, but this one was a bit of a priority. The Ninth Doctor set looks awesome and it'll be nice to get finally get an official Christopher Eccleston mini - after WG have sold three different David Tennants already.
DeleteAll good stuff, Simon. I'm pleased you now have your trio of the Dalek Emperor's Personal Guard painted up so that you can now officially use them in the "Exterminate" game.
ReplyDeleteI do have the Draconian set but mine are still in their box. I look forward to seeing how you paint yours.
I am also delighted to see Ninth Doctor and Companions set coming out. They are superb sculpts. I'm looking forward to getting them when they go on sale.
Thanks Bryan. The Draconians look a bit fiddly in places, but I'm hoping won't be too bad. Having eight to do though is a little intimidating. WG have lots of lovely previews to come, and this one really goes show how nice the Ninth Doctor set looks.
DeleteThere's a lot of Who goodness here Simon - and after my trip to Warlord Games last month and seeing the all the stuff on the shelves, you're REALLY testing my will power ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think you already know that if they were 'true' 28mm I'd already be in there!
(and I still think you're a "skin job" with an enhanced painting sub-routine)
Cheers Greg. Lots of lovely temptations to come over the next few weeks as I plough into my "Doctor Who" backlog :-)
DeleteVery nicely done Simon, the black dome makes the Dalek look even more sinister!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael. Good to get this one done as he's been sat on the table for a while :-)
DeleteNice work on the Dalek and Draconian Simon, the new Dr and his companion set looks good
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave. Lots of lovely 'Nu Who' stuff coming this month, so I really want to get cracking on a few of the "Doctor Who" boxes I already own :-)
DeleteMore good stuff and the black dome does make the figure stand out more.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil. I think the Emperor's Guard are one of the best-looking Daleks out there; second only to the Imperial white & gold colour scheme :-)
DeleteI like your Dalek, very nicely done as always. I am looking forward to the Draconians getting done as they look very nice models and I don't remember seeing them on TV. (Too young you see!!) The new Dr Who sculpts look excellent, very well done by Warlord. I can't wait to see more, baddies preferably!!!! Good post, and I love the previews!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers Undercoat. One of many Daleks coming, as I try and clear some space for "Salute" on my painting table. Hopefully the Ninth Doctor & Companions will be out for the show :-)
DeleteLovely work on the Dalek Simon, and the Draconians look to be well on their way to being another set of show stoppers.
ReplyDeleteBut as for the new releases, I'm sorry but as I read through that list of names each was like an arrow being shot into my heart, bringing back memories of how they began the rot that killed my love of the good doctor!!! :-(
Cheers Roger.
Thanks Roger. Plenty of non 'Nu-Who' previews to come too, my friend. So don't lose heart yet ;-)
DeleteThe Daleks are looking very nice and I like the sculpting of the Draconians and so l am looking forward to seeing how you finish them.
ReplyDeleteCheers Vagabond. Simple stuff, and I have more Daleks to come too. Hoping to get some more work done on the Draconians over the next few days.
DeleteLovely looking dalek and the draconnians are coming along nicely!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain, Much appreciated. I do enjoy painting the “Warlord Games” Daleks as they are so very well detailed. Hopefully some more Daleks and finished Draconians to come in the near future :-)
DeleteThere you go again, goading me to paint my own Daleks. Damn you!
ReplyDeleteLovely work.
Ha Hah! Cheers Kieron. More Daleks to come too :-)
DeleteEven though I'm not that well informed on Dr. Who at the moment, I'm still looking forward to some more of your actions with your vast array of potential enemies for the poor doc.
ReplyDelete(At least I recognised the Dalek!)
Many thanks Joe. I certainly feel that there'll be a strong influx of "Doctor Who" postings over the next few weeks ;-)
DeleteDalek and Draconian, all the D's. Nicely done mate.
ReplyDeleteNever EVER was a fan of Ecclestone's Who. Just too damned goofy, even gave Sylvester McCoy a run for his money in the silliness-onstage dept imo.
Capt Jack though in contrast is one of my all time fav companions and Torchwood was so much fun because of him. Makes one wonder if Warlord plan a Torchwood expansion?
Cheers Dai, still plenty of work to do on the Draconians - but they contain quite a bit of gold detail tbh. Sadly “Warlord Games” won’t be touching “Torchwood” any time soon as they only hold the licence for the “Doctor Who” TV series, and not even the Eighth Doctor movie...
