“Who’s A Good Bizarro Doggie?”

This rather jolly 28mm “Wizkids” model of Lockjaw is number 001 from the “Heroclix” Marvel Fantastic Forces range and is my third submission for the Mo’vember 2014 challenge Dick Garrison is running over on his blog “Rantings From Under The Wargames Table”. The figure is actually quite large and as a result I was unable to accommodate him on the usual 40mm round base I reserve for similar-sized figures. As a result I have placed him upon a “Games Workshop” 60mm base instead.

As the vast majority of the model was going to be brown I undercoated the Inhuman using “Vallejo” Heavy Brown and then simply picked out the alien bulldog-like being’s large moustache with “Citadel” Abaddon Black. Lockjaw’s antenna was easily apinted using Boltgun Metal with a Nuln Oil wash. To try and bring out the detail of the Pet Avenger’s facial folds I slowly washed the model with Devlan Mud. Once dry I then concentrated on applying additional washes of “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade over the model.

In addition if you’re interested in Lockjaw, then a review of the 2006 “Marvel Comics” issue where he becomes the Thing’s pet can be found here: http://thebrownbagaeccb.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/the-thing-4-marvel-comics.html
In between other painting projects I am still beavering away these three miniatures by “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio”. I’ve almost completed the Freedom Fighter Vila, and finally boxed off and washed the red costume of Jenna. In addition I’ve finished the highlights on Tweedy Mattison’s black trousers, washed his pink shirt (to go with the “cool” red bow-tie I have planned for him) and started the undercoat for his brown jacket.

Speaking of “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” I have received a lovely envelope from the company with the words “Secret Santa” emblazoned on them. This was my first year in participating in Ian’s ‘Secret Santa’ over on “The Blog With No Name” [http://walladvantage2.blogspot.co.uk] and I just want to thank him, his excellent wife Cath and whoever has bought me some “7TV” goodies. Very much appreciated and I look forward to doing a Christmas Day posting when I open my present.
These five models are from code PWM32 Arresting Gestapo Troopers by “Pulp Figures”. I’m planning to base and prime a number of Bob Murch’s superb miniatures in preparation for my participation in the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge next month.

  1. I have to say in all honesty that I am shocked at how much better Lockjaw looks now you've painted him over the original. The others are also coming on well too even your "not Dr Who" (though in my opinion the show has not been Dr Who since Slyvester McCoy's era, but thats just me being a misable old g*t).

    Cheers Roger

    1. Thanks Roger. Very nice model to paint tbh. Vila should be finished for a posting next week, if not all three of my CD minis. But I really need to crack on with the Oldhammer Skinks and some other minis I've pulled out of loft in order to have a couple of forces for a new rule set I've bought. Having met many of the Docs I have to say McCoy and Colin Baker were absolute gents. Indeed both have signed some of my 'Mooretoons' I've drawn of them for me and Baker did have one of my cartoons in a frame in his downstairs bathroom!! Or at least that's what he told me. I suppose he could have meant when he got home he threw it down the toilet..!?! :-)

  2. My word, he's huge, I completely missed the scale of Lockjaw when I saw him in the earlier posts - wow!

    1. Lockjaw is indeed a hefty mini. Unfortunately he's just a little too big for the 40mm but a little too small (imho) for the larger 60mm base. However, as you'll later see with some of my basing of the 28mm "Pulp Figures", if there's one thing I can;t stand, its a mini with bits slightly sticking out over a base.

  3. I like Lockjaw. I can remember when I was a kid reading my Fantastic Four comics the first time the Inhumans were introduced. I was instantly taken by them and thought they were great allies of the FF. Ah, happy days!

    1. Ah... I have a b&w pocket-sized reprint of "Fantastic Four" #45. Jack Kirby and Stan Lee really created a load of top characters during that period; including Dragon Man (whom I'm currently painting). Happy days indeed :-) I don't suppose you still have your copy?

    2. Sorry, Blax, but I sold all of my old Marvel comics (Fantastic Four, Spiderman and X-Men). What an idiot! I really should have kept them.

    3. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Just think if you sold them now you could pay for someone to paint your figures and spend all your time gaming :-)

    4. Hindsight is wonderful. Sadly, one of the Fantastic Four comics I sold featured the first appearance of the Silver Surfer and if I'd have known how much THAT comic was going to be worth I'd have definitely held on to it.

    5. Oh dear. FF #48... these days even a battered copy will set you back £150. I'll stick to collecting back issues of Jack Kirby's "Kamandi" and Gene Colan's "Tomb of Dracula". At least most of their early issues will still give me change from a fiver.

    Nicely painted.

    1. Cheers Bob. Nice to paint something genuinely fun and definitely the best of the Lockjaw models "Wizkids" have produced.
