"If The Yeti Are In London, Then The Intelligence Is Here Too."

"Don't run, Victoria, but there's a Yeti over there, on the platform."
These six 28mm metal models are based upon the robot Yeti from the British Science Fiction television adventure “Doctor Who” story "The Abominable Snowmen". This six-part serial formed part Season Four back in September 1967 when Patrick Troughton was the (second) Doctor.

Produced by “Black Tree Design” under codes DW204 Yeti and DW209 Yeti Attacking, the Great Intelligence’s mechanical monstrosities were first undercoated with either “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna or Heavy Brown and then all given a healthy wash of “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Each miniature was then treated to a further wash of "Citadel" Nuln Oil" around their eyes and claws.
"The Yeti have dealt with the explosives here, and I'm willing to bet they'll do the same... at Holborn as well."
Having finished shading all the ‘hairy beasties’, they were then dry-brushed with more “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna or Heavy Brown (as appropriate) before I picked out their eyes with “Heavy Goldbrown”, and their claws with White. Both of these areas were then washed with more of “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Finally the eyes were highlighted with some additional “Vallejo” Heavy Goldbrown.

As I've now decided to plough full steam into "Age Of Sigmar" by “Games Workshop”, and bought the rather impressive Starter Set as a result, I have spent a little time over the past few days putting together a few of Plaguebearers of Nurgle which I found still sat in their original "Warhammer 40K/Warhammer Fantasy" box. Indeed their container had sat upon one of my shelves unloved for so long that I even still had to remove its cellophane before I could get to work on the ten assorted multi-part figures inside...
Plaguebearers Of Nurgle WIPs - These daemons need to be dry-brushed and have their putrid details picked out
I've a few ideas as to what rule systems I want to use these incredibly characterful miniatures for, not least of which will be "Zombicide: Black Plague". But as initially I hope to use them with "Age Of Sigmar", I have super-glued them on to some of the game's new (and apparently somewhat contentious) 32mm round bases. This additional girth has actually given the models a bit more stability, as well as some extra room with which to place a few of the little Nurgling figures found accompanying them on their plastic sprues.

For now though I have simply gone with three reasonably straightforward poses, and kept their stands clear of any distractions. As with the three bases of Nurglings I've currently got in my painting queue, I have initially undercoated these daemons with "Vallejo" Khaki and rather liberally washed them with "Citadel" Thrakka Green.

  1. If I ever decide to try AOS it will not be on round bases! I better stop before a rant gets underway lol....

    Nice plague bearers dude :-)

    1. Cheers Andy. Early days yet on the Plaguebearers but I rather like them... and their larger bases ;-)

  2. I'm with Andy here - do not get me started on an "I hate Games Workshop" rant!
Still, I do like your Yetis. At least they're praiseworthy.

    1. Thanks Bryan. I think the Yeti Attacking sculpt is another of my fave "Black Tree Design" sculpts. Full of heft and character. Having never played "Warhammer Fantasy" I'm not really sighted on all the reasons why "Age Of Sigmar" is such a contentious ruleset. But these old Nurgle plastics are rather nice imho ;-)

  3. I'm rather up in the air regarding the GW - deathofWHFB argument.

AoS looks okay - though I haven't really liked the new takes on all the factions thus far. At least Nurgle still remains the same and recent releases for the faction have been rather tasty to say the least.

I like the green you've gone with for their skin.

The Yetis continue to impress me. Just big solid sculpts and remind me of the Loony Tunes big hairy monster character that would pop up from time to time. :)

    1. Cheers Dai. I went with Nurgle as I too don't like many of the re-imaginings of the old Warhammer World races. The "Vallejo" Heavy Khaki is a great colour imho. I haven't seen a Loony Tune with Gossamer in it for ages, though as I recall he was bright orange!?! I do however have a "Horrorclix" miniature which may well fit the bill for you ;-)

  5. Best not pay too much attention to this as can't afford to be distracted again, but love the Yeti miniatures.

    1. Cheers Michael. They're great and hopefully when the new "Warlord Games" "Doctor Who" game comes out, they'll produce some of the armed Yeti from "Web Of Fear" to keep these company.

  6. Those yeti's are very impressive, you must have quite the "whoop" now (OK that's baboons but what is the collective term for Yeti?), I do like the colour of your chaos stuff, still not keen on Nurgle and haven't really had much to do with AoS, but it will be interesting to see your "twisted" take on it.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. You should be able to see my entire whoop of Yetis in action very soon, along with my "twisted" take on "Age of Sigmar" ;-)

  7. Oooh, yetis! Nice work, Simon. One of the better Black Tree sculpts. They're the wrong colour, of course -"Roses are red, yetis are blue..."
And nice to see more of Nurgle's forces - of the four Chaos Lords, he was always my favourite.

    1. Cheers Jez, and many many thanks for the wonderful "Heroscape" minis you sent me. Very much appreciated. Indeed I'm desperately trying to source some more of those Nagrubs (Alien dogs) as they'd make fantastic toxic runners for Alien Zombicide :-) The four-eyed dog is also getting based as I type in order to jump right to the top of my painting queue!!! You're a top fellow my good chap :-)

    2. Your very welcome, Simon. The choice of figures seemed appropriate, so I'm glad that they were of use.

    3. More than of use Jez. I have quite a quantity of Nagrubs travelling from across the Pond as I type, and hopefully the ones you sent me will be finished by the weekend. I love 'em and that four-eyed dog is awesome too!!

  8. Splendid Yet's Simon. That's a sizeable force of them you have now. I want to call a group of Yetis a "womble". I too have left the GW cult and wouldn't call myself their biggest fan. Having said that I do like those plague bearers and your treatment of them dude!

    1. Thanks Bob. I'll hopefully have my full Yeti 'womble' on the tabletop very soon. Early days for the Plaguebearers but the sculpts have loads of putrid detail which should be fun to pick out and paint.

    1. Cheers Simon. I'm hoping "AOS" will be the go-to-ruleset whenever I just want to throw some models against one another and hurl a load of dice!!!
