"Heavy 4 is out of control! Robot units neutralise!" |
This 28mm multi-part walking cadaver is predominantly made up of plastic pieces taken from the "Mantic Games" "Kings Of War" Zombie Swarm. But has been converted, using some of the metal 'bitz' from "Warlord Games" Mega-City Zombie Horde pack, into the living corpse of Judge Garson; the deceased skipper of Justice Department tank Heavy Four who fell under the deadly control of the Sisters of Death during "Necropolis" and murdered his entire vehicle's crew.
Like all my zeds for Zomtober 2016, the former Judge was undercoated with “Vallejo” Iraqi Sand and heavily washed with “Citadel” Thrakka Green. His exposed innards were then 'picked out' with "Vallejo" White, Heavy Red and Heavy Warmgrey before being treated to a veritable 'bath' of "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson.
"At the massive breach in Mega-City's West Wall, the legions of the dead have come calling - " |
With the majority of the lawman's decaying corpse painted, I began applying some colour to the remnants of his Justice Department uniform, and decided to simply replicate the scheme I used on a far 'healthier' Street Judge a couple of years ago. As a result his remaining belt pouches, knee-pad and elbow-pad, as well as his tank helmet, were painted using "Vallejo" Heavy Grey and "Citadel" Thrakka Green. Whilst his shoulder-pad was treated to a combination of "Vallejo" Gold and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade.
Having finished Judge Garson, or rather the remains that would later be re-animated by Sabbat the Necromagus during "Judgement Day", I thought I'd also apply the finishing touches to another unlucky inhabitant of Mega-City One. This somewhat hungry-looking citizen's undead flesh was painted identically to that of his fellow futuristic walking cadavers. However, as I wanted him to appear rather more colourful than some of his brain-chomping brethren, I painted his clothing with a mixture of "Vallejo" Squid Pink, Heavy Violet and Heavy Green.
Zombie Mistress WIPs - This model still requires some additional brown and green washes |
As I only have time for one more posting before Zomtober 2016 finishes, I have been busily progressing the final couple of "Mongoose Publishing" Mega-City Undead miniatures in my collection. It's not clear just where 'Mongoose Matt' got his inspiration for having the Zombie Mistress sculpted, as I don't recall such a creature existing within the pages of the British comic book "2000 A.D.". But as this model came as part of my pledge for the overly long (and still running) October 2012 "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game: Block War" kickstarter, it seemed rude not to give her a lick of my paintbrush and finish her along with the rest of my zombies.
gating better and better. I am almost tempted to start some Megacity zombies as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Clint. I'm hoping that "Warlord Games" buy up the licence now "Mongoose Publishing" have announced that they have dropped the license of the 2000AD - Judge Dredd franchise. I certainly want some more myself :-)
DeleteNice selection of zombies, Simon. I have been waiting to see how you painted your Zombie Mistress so that i could compare her with my own. You are right, she did not appear in the comic series but I still think she is a great figure and I prefer her to Sabbat.
ReplyDeleteI, too, hope that Warlord Games negotiates a new deal to keep the Judge Dredd figure collection going. They have done far more for this range than Mongoose did. Please check out my next blog post coming on Monday as I have a lot to say about Judge Dredd. It's mostly good news.
Cheers Bryan. I doubt my painting of the Zombie Mistress will win any prizes though as I found her rather uninspiring; on account of her not being official “Judge Dredd” canon, if that makes sense. However, I have yet to dig out my own Sabbat the Necromagus mini, for as you say, that’s a rather lack-lustre sculpt too.
DeleteThe “Lead Forum Adventure” believe another company has grabbed/is grabbing the “Judge Dredd” licence. Sadly it won’t be “Crooked Dice game Design” who have already stated it wasn’t them, and I see Mongoose Matt has put up all the pro-painted minis from the kickstarter on Ebay. I can only hope that my pledge is still going to be fulfilled. I would never have backed such a long-winded KS if I’d known “Mongoose Publishing” were going to fail to delivery my rewards throughout the entirety of them owning the licence. That must be some record!?!
The good news though is that my second printing of “2000 A.D.” #2000 has arrived, along with a number of consecutive back-issues from “Rebellion”, so as I am own a subscription for the comic, I am about to once again regularly read the adventures of Tharg!!
That's very interesting news, Simon. I don't really mind who acquires the license to sell the Judge Dredd figures, just as long as someone gets it and allows it to continue and hopefully expand.
DeleteI passed on both the Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper Kickstarters and I'm mighty glad I did. Both have been handled terribly. I feel you pain, my friend.
Sabbat is one of the few figures I did not buy. He is the most powerful character in the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" - yes, more powerful than Dredd himself. I can't find a use for him and as I said, I don't particularly like his figure. I'm having far more fun creating stats and background for the Zombie Mistress. I really like her figure.
I'm so glad you have received a print copy of prog #2000 of 2000AD and you have taken out a subscription, too. I also subscribe to 2000AD so I never miss an issue.
I'm certainly glad I passed on the "Rogue Trooper" KS, Bryan. i was in that until near the end too!! Bizarrely I think I would probably have bought many more "Judge Dredd" minis if I hadn't been part of the KS; especially once "Warlord Games" sold them. Sadly what with "Mongoose Publishing" losing the "Star Trek Battles" licence a while ago and now "Judge Dredd" I don't see what else they have to offer mini wargamers.
DeleteI'm a bit worried about my "2000 A.D." subscription tbh, as I fear I'll be incessantly painting the comic's characters throughout 2017 as a result ;-)

DeleteYou say that as if its a bad thing, chuckle! :-)
I'm really hoping to try and stick to my plan of vastly reducing my lead/plastic mountain next year, by hosting lots of themed months. That's going to be hard to do regularly reading a comic book that will make me flit to other genres. Your excellent website is bad enough, Bryan ;-)
DeleteYou are building up quite the force! Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gordon. One last Zomtober 2016 post to go... and then on to (more) "Frostgrave" and Mo'Vember!!
DeleteNicely done again Simon, I notice that Mongoose are flogging off the RPG JD stuff for pence though. Might have to get the PDFs and just hope someone picks up the licence
ReplyDeleteCheers Andy. Its disconcerting that at a time when myself, and Vampifan, are really getting into "Judge Dredd" the rug is pulled from under the licence. Typical luck!!
DeleteCracking work Simon, this has been another wonderfully productive month for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael. Definitely in the zone at the mo for sure!!
DeleteMore great addition to the Mega City One Zed horde. :)
ReplyDeleteCheers Leon. Much appreciated. Still have a couple more minis to post too.
DeleteMore MC1 zeds that look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteSad to hear that the 2000AD game is getting left behind. I saw the sale on Warlord Games website and had guessed as much - even went to see if some of the muties or other Cursed Earth misfits, etc were still available but all sadly out of stock.
Thanks Dai. Its genuinely a shame about the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" as I was finally starting to enjoy painting the minis and wanting to add to my collection.
DeleteStunning additions and great paint work dude. I am sure someone will pick up the reigns for the JDMG!
ReplyDeleteCheers Simon. Very much appreciated. My fingers are crossed for "Judge Dredd" too.
DeleteReally nice stuff Simon, I too love that Zombie Mistress.
ReplyDeleteIt really sucks about Warlord, but sadly by the time I knew the ABC's were for sale (via Bryan's blog), they were all out of stock.
Looks like I missed out there. (Booo!!)
Cheers Roger.
Thanks Roger. The Zombie Mistress is now finished and will be posted up tomorrow, along with my final zed for Zomtober. I suppose the only good thing about "Mongoose Publishing" letting the licence go is that at least I have a box full of their miniatures from the long-winded kickstarter. The ABC Warriors are worth keeping your eye out for as they're something special imho.
