"Ring's Still Working."

"That's all that matters."
This 40mm tall plastic “Wizkids” model of a Green Lantern Boxing Glove is miniature number R100.10 from the War of Light DC "Heroclix" set, and depicts one of the interstellar law enforcement agent's telekinetically controlled solid light constructs. Announced in January 2014, this "six-month story-line Organized Play program" actually included the release of a Green Lantern Corps' Power Battery, along with several differently-shaped constructs, such as an axe, wall, net and bulldozer.

The 3D Special Object was initially removed from its tiny "Wizkids" base and super-glued onto one of the thin 40mm circular bases I use for the vast majority of my objective markers. It was then treated to three coats of "Vallejo" Dark Green so as to ensure its translucent green plastic was completely covered in paint.
Iron Golems WIPs - The highly detailed figures' "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey skin simply hasn't worked out
The miniature was later thoroughly washed with "Citadel" Biel-Tan Green Shade and enthusiastically dry-brushed using some (more) "Vallejo" Dark Green. I did consider whether to apply a second, somewhat lighter green, dry-brush to the model. But in the end decided I liked the deep green colour I have already achieved, so left well enough alone, and simply flocked the boxing glove's base.

So straightforward a painting subject has really been a blessing considering the amount of problems I've experienced trying to finished even one of this month's planned "Warcry" figures by "Games Workshop". I have already had to previously re-paint parts of my Ogre Breacher in order to get a grip upon the Nottingham-based company's Contrast colours, and now I've found it just impossible to reach other parts of the imposing figure with my brush-tip due to all the intricate detail on the sculpt.
"Knight Models" WIPs - Beast Boy, alongside his Tiger and Gorilla forms
To make matters worse, I do not like the way the Chaos warriors' pale grey skin has turned out either, despite watering down its somewhat obligatory "Citadel" Nuln Oil wash. This combination appears especially poor-looking when I'm only able to blindly dab it beneath an overshadowing shoulder-pad or alongside an irregular running metallic chain-belt. As a result I've briefly set the project aside, to ponder upon a change in palette and re-order which areas of each fighter should be painted first...

Fortunately, I have already taken stock of the Batman Miniatures:Teen Titans Boxed Set I plan to progress over the course of October, so have spent some time assembling and priming some of the various "Knight Models" resin figures depicting Beast Boy in both his human, and animal forms. To be honest, I have never had much fun building anything for the "Batman Miniatures Game", and this trio were absolutely no exception to the rule. Overall they are incredibly dinky, and appear liable to snap at a mere moment's notice.

  1. Nice progress on the Warcry minis. Love that Boxing Glove.

    1. Cheers Simon. The Boxing Glove is great imho, and my problem now is that I'm sorely tempted to purchase some more solid light objects from that release to entirely populate a GL themed tabletop...

  2. The glove looks good, but I read it was translucent to begin with, I'd have been tempted to paint it with washes and glazes to keep the see through look.
With the skin on the warcry models, base the skin with Rakarth flesh then use Apothecary white contrast paint, this will give you a effective looking grey skin tone.
If your having problems with which part to paint, I normally go with the lowest point first the skin, as it's easier to pick out the raised areas of detail after.
Nice beast boy models, those Knight models are a pain to put together

    1. Thanks Dave. I didn't actually like the translucent look and wanted something far more solid-looking, hence the "Vallejo" Dark Green. In addition I wanted to see just how dark that paint was as I was considering it for my Beast Boy alternative animal forms.

Tbh, I'm not a fan of the "GW" Contrast paints, and ended up feeling a much darker skin tone was much more suitable for a warband baking in the heat of Khorne's kingdom. I'm actually a feet upwards painter myself, but will try your lowest point first approach on a couple more "Warcry" minis and let you know how I get on :-)

    2. The contrast paints take some getting used to, as I wrote about in my recent article

    3. I recall the fun you had with "Citadel" Apothecary White and your Stormtroopers :-)

  3. That boxing glove is....weird, but fun! Are you doing a Green Lantern mini to go with it? Keep plugging away at the Warcry minis and get them done as I can't wait to see them. Suggestion: have a Star Trek month and paint nothing but Warcry! I like the Teen Titans minis but the pose on the gorilla looks a little odd. The rumour is a new edition on the Batman miniatures game could be announced this week so your painting could be well timed.

    1. I have a few GL miniatures but don't want to get distracted with "Heroclix" currently; this and Ant-Man were one-offs just to keep me sane and painting.

The gorilla pose is a little more upright than his sculptor clearly intended because for some reason "Knight Models" have him half in and half out of his base, and I didn't want his chest, head and forearms dangling right over the stand's lip.

Next month will undoubtedly have something of a "Star Trek" flavour as its "Zomtober" and I plan on finishing my Borg and some scenic pieces for it. But the "Warcry" stuff should be shifted quite quickly now I've settled upon a palette.

  4. That big fist is interesting. I have nothing good to say about "Warcry" so I'll say nothing. The Knight Models are okay but I've read so many negative comments about them being super fiddly I'm staying well clear of them. That said, I wish you well with all your projects. Keep 'em coming!

    1. Cheers Bryan. The "Knight Models" stuff are ridiculously fiddly, as you'll doubtless hear over the next few weeks. Fingers crossed I can cope but I really don't like the resin and the joints are so small in places that I can't even pin them...

  5. "A bd green boxing glove"- well that was unexpected, but I'm sure it has a purpose !
When uou;re having trouble not getting the effect you want on your Titans, I think it's a good idea to take a step back and have a re-think.
I've always had a distrust of resin figures, I feel your pain.

    1. Thanks Joe. I like to post up the odd surprise every now and then - there's another coming soon ;-) Fingers crossed the Teen Titans will be progressed at a suitable rate, but behind the scenes I'm already having a lot of problems with their assembly.

  6. Not a big GL fan, but the Glove seems to fit the bill well enough.

Beast Boy is funny in the cartoon, but I know nothing of him comics-wise. More of a Marvel fan, though I might have mentioned that before int eh past... :) )

    1. Cheers Dai. I'm probably more a "DC Comics" fan tbh; especially these days as "Marvel Comics" seems to have really lost its way imho. Beast Boy is definitely comic relief in nearly everything he appears in - which is a good thing, as I love his transformations.
