"You Are Outside Your Function."

"Our victory is inevitable. The Doctor will come to us and Peinforte is a simple savage..."
This 40mm tall metal Cyberman figure is produced by “Warlord Games” and can be found within the company's marvellous "Nightmares In Silver" Cybermen Collector's Set 1966-2013. Sculpted to replicate the spray painted, cricket glove-wearing cyborgs seen in Kevin Clarke's 25th Anniversary Special "Silver Nemesis", these "cybernetically augmented humanoids" attempted to take control of a statue made of living metal, originally created on Gallifrey.

The miniature was initially undercoated with "Citadel" Abaddon Black, before being given a double layer of Ironbreaker and a wash of Nuln Oil. The figure's eyes were then darkened with a small amount of Abaddon Black and the entire model dry-brushed with more Ironbreaker. As a nod to the Cybermen's chrome like paint finish during this 1988 three-parter, I tried to make it's head and chest-piece standout all the more by subsequently dulling down everything else with a second shade of Nuln Oil.
"Nightmares In Silver" WIPs - The Cybermen have all been primed, painted silver and washed with black shade
"Warlord Games" seemingly have some big plans for Kit Pedler's co-creations, following their recent announcement that they will be releasing four of the "overhauled" Mondasians from the 1967 television serial "Doctor Who And The Tomb Of The Cybermen" "in a few months alongside the Cyber Controller." In addition they have 'leaked' some "concept cyber stuff" from "N-FX Studio" which shows both the outside and interior of the Cybermen's Telos tomb in all its chilling glory...

Such tantalising teases have really helped enthuse my desire to finish painting the remaining "exquisitely sculpted pewter" figures I own; in particular the BBC programme's "original" design for the Cybermen from 1966. I had at first thought I would base this cumbersome-looking version with snow flock, so as to replicate its adventure at the Earth's South Pole, but having recently endured "The Doctor Falls" I'm now tempted to utilise that episode's somewhat less monochromatic palette and turn the miniature into companion Bill Potts' converted self.
"The bleak pale sun that glittered so blindingly from the ice-fields and snow-covered plains struck sheens of silver..."
Lastly, I have finished working on the second of my 28mm scale resin Crushed Cars by "Wargames Terrain Workshop". Available from Dave Stone's Post Apocalyptic and S.D.Z.A. accessories range, this hefty piece of scenery was painted in precisely the same manner as my previous one. However, rather than flock the piece with "Games Workshop" Static Grass, I instead used some "Citadel" Snow.

As a result this particular rusty wreck will feature somewhat prominently on my "Metamorphosis Alpha" tabletop, and represent one of the many anachronistic objects that will be discovered during my medieval/fantasy adventurers' travels on board James M. Ward's starship Warden. Indeed, as my fur-clad company explore the outer decks of the "generation spaceship" I plan for them to encounter several more of the company's highly detailed, yet well-corroded, futuristic scenic pieces.

  1. All very exciting Simon. I had to cover my eyes at the DW `spoilers` but, as we are only up to mid way through series 8 at the moment with no idea yet what lies ahead (being new to it all).

I adore your snow themed terrain, as it really inspires me (and us) and spurs me on to keep going with our own thing as well; which as you know, is also an ice and snow world (on one pole) **brrrr c-c-cold** and allows us to put our Frosgrave ideas on one half, and jungles and desert (with just a touch of dark Gothic) on the other side.

    1. Thanks very much Hils. I'd highly recommend "Silver Nemesis" as despite being a bit silly in parts, is one of my fave Seventh Doctor stories. I'm certainly hoping "Warlord Games" do one of their boxed sets on it in the future.

The snow-themed scenery for "Metamorphosis Alpha" is coming along rather nicely imho, and I'm hoping to get quite a bit more done over the next few weeks having visited Dave at the Bovington show recently.

  2. Lovely work on the Cybermen as always, I love the "wicket keeper gloves, and Moon boots", version.

Interesting concept behind this Metamorphosis Alpha game, that last picture shouldn't work...but it does (just wish I could identify that car, it's really starting to annoy me now!)

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. This version of a Cyberman is one of my faves tbh, as the I thought the chrome look worked wonderfully. "Metamorphosis Alpha" should be a lot of fun once I start the campaign as it'll be packed full of the weird and wonderful ;-)

    2. Sorry to have annoyed you Roger, the car started life as a custom car along the styling of 50 and 60's vehicles like the Ford Pop and Wild Willy Coupe, I took elements from lot's of vehicles like in Mad Max before crushing it down. All stems from the fact I used to customize cars in life size and built a Wild Willy Coupe Beetle with frenched in lights and completely deseemed. Hope this helps

    3. Thanks Dave, I could see the similarities to the VW based Eagle and Nova Kitcars, but couldn't place this one (reminds me of this one though)...

    4. I mean of course the Eagle and Nova look a bit like you "cruiser" sci/fi car.

    5. Funny you should mention the Nova as I had one of those too, was an awesome car and years ahead of it's time in styling IMHO. The top ones use a lot of influences from the Ford Pop and Wild Willy Coupe era cars so not far off at all

  4. Great work on the cybermen Simon, will you be adding other colours in on the older style cybermen as your taking inspiration from the recent series for the basing ?
Great work on the second car, looks great with the snow base. Very much looking forward to seeing what you do with the other pieces to fit in with your scenario

    1. Cheers Dave. Some of the earlier versions of Cybermen are undoubtedly more colourful (and complicated to paint imho) than the modern versions, so I have a few buttons and tubes to pick-out. The Mondasian Cyberman will certainly have some colour to it as I'll be painting it with the modern-day palette. Glad you like the car, I've a couple of vending machines coming up very soon ;-)

    2. Looks like the Triad have all picked up your vending machines Dave....

    3. Tbh Andy, there isn't much of Dave's I don't want, but I desperately trying not to build up too much of a "Wargames Terrain Workshop" backlog :-)

    4. It was a great idea by the three of you to build one, it has proved very popular indeed, really need to slow up a bit as I don't want to cause too much off a backlog on Simon's painting table.

    5. "Really need to slow up a bit as I don't want to cause too much off a backlog on Simon's painting table" - taking the rest of the year off then, huh Dave? LOL :-)

    6. Wouldn't go that far but maybe stick to three releases a month, maybe ! LOL. Perhaps it would be easier to ask is there a genre I'm safe building you wouldn't want ? ROFL

      Delete
    7. Probably not one tbh... 'cause as soon as I see something I like I tend to try and get into that genre as well. This is a golden age for our hobby, but a shocker for my wallet :-)

    8. Very true mate, at Bovington I picked up the Suicide Squad box as the wife really wanted the Harley Quinn, so another gaming system in the house and a lot of detailed painting to do, plus back into Judge Dredd and also Imperial Assault, still got Bushido to finish and still have a load of GW pieces to finish. The main reason for trying to resist Doctor Who but my resistance seems to be failing !

    9. Ah... one of my regrets from "Salute" 2017 was failing to walk away with the "Suicide Squad" boxed set. I'm very much hoping that they'll be an opportunity to correct that "Colours" or "Warfare".

    10. Great boxed set, the models are great going to take some serious painting, disappointed there was no enchantress or Rick flag model even as an additional purchase option hopefully they will remedy that

    11. I know "Knight Models" have released at least Rick Flag, Dave. He can be found here: https://knightmodels-store.com/Rick-Flag/en

  5. Cracking good painting. I love that first figure shown, definitely that's my go to mental image for the Cybermen.

    1. Thanks Roy. I'm a "Revenge Of The Cybermen" fan myself, but I think this "Silver Nemesis" version is probably the visually striking of all the class Who incarnations. I certainly think the contrast between the suit and chrome helmets was superb :-)

    1. Thanks Andy, the "Nightmares In Silver" Cybermen Collector's Set is superb imho and was a cracking idea by "Warlord Games". I don't know how Bryan cranked his box out so fast, mine have taken me ages to paint!!

  8. I really like your Cybermen, Simon. They are such a lot of fun to paint and so easy to paint, too.

QUOTE: "I don't know how Bryan cranked his box out so fast." That's easy, Simon. Not having to go to work every day means I do have a LOT of hobby time, when I'm not caring for my mum.

Dave's crushed car is just a delight and whilst I have nothing against your paint jobs, I'm pleased I asked Dave to paint mine.

    1. Cheers Bryan. I like the fact that the basics for all of the "Nightmares In Silver" are the same straightforward technique of prime, wash and dry-brush. But have been enjoying all the little differences between the versions too, like black cabling, the odd chest unit light or even just a second wash of "Citadel" Nuln Oil.

S'funny, but I actually find my productivity decreases when I'm not going to work. I guess I look forward to my snippets of hobby-time and that makes me make the most of them. When on holiday, I don't feel under that pressure - if that makes sense.

I like Dave's painting of the Crushed Car too, but its not the rusty bare metal look I've chosen for my "Metamorphosis Alpha" palette.

  9. Cracking job on what I consider the "proper" cybermen Simon.
The later incarnations are great, but lose a bit of the 'upgraded humanity' horror feel.
Even though I PROMISED myself I'd not take on any more new projects this year, I am SO tempted by the Dr Who eye candy currently on display!!

    1. Thanks Wargames Addict. I too love the "Silver Nemesis" Cybermen, and hope at some point that "Warlord Games" do a boxed set based upon the characters from it. I'm afraid I have loads of "Doctor Who" stuff coming, as well as even more news as to future "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" releases :-)

    1. Cheers Michael. I have a few more to post, alongside this month's "Doctor Who" releases of Vashta Nerada and Sea Devils; plus "Warlord Games" have announced even more miniatures for this range which may well tempt you even further - and with rules for all these new additions on the horizon its looking like a great time to get into "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" ;-)

  13. I love the paintjobs on these guys! I am the artist who sculpted the 10 Cybermen collectors range and it's awesome to see them all done up. Originally I thought I wouldn't enjoy making the earier versions of the Cybermen but they turned out to be my favorites. Thank you for showing these!

    1. Greg, thanks ever so much for commenting. Really appreciated :-)

I love this particular sculpt so much that Alan has actually sent me a couple more to paint - they should be posted up on the blog soon, and its allowed me to make one a Leader too :-)

Top marks on the Mondasian Cyberman - how you did all those tubes and chest unit is witchcraft imho - excellent stuff!!

    2. I'm really glad that you like them. They were a lot of fun to work on. I used a program called Zbrush to make them and there is actually a "Tubes" function but its a bit tricky to use. The Tubes were a pain but it worked out in the end. :)

      Delete
    3. The Tubes may well have been "a pain", Greg, but I definitely think they were worth it in the end. Hopefully you'll be asked to do some more in the very near future, as I'm a bit of a Cyber-fan, and these sculpts are "excellent." ;-)
