Few More Posts And Updates On New Wix Website

More "Alternative Armies" Elementals Have Been Added To The New Wix Website 

With a couple more new postings of finished miniatures having been posted up recently on the new Wix website, I've started the lengthy task of transferring some of my earliest articles across as well - starting with a retitled Monthly Musing from 2010, which focuses upon a 15mm Napoleonic "Black Powder" project I started (and disappointingly never finished).

I have though been somewhat hampered in my efforts by Blogger suddenly reverting to pure HTML whilst I'm looking at my pages' content, randomly realigning my paragraphs and haphazardly changing the fonts of previous postings...

In addition, the top of the website now contains links to this (old) Blogger site and a brief summary of "Fantorical" since its start as a printed 'fanzine' way back 2003. Going forward the plan is to create some more of these additional pages covering subjects such as purchases, "Kickstarters", shows and painting projects.

This 15mm scale miniature of a Giant Fire Elemental is produced by “Alternative Armies” and can be bought either separately as blister HOT84 or as part of the company's pre-made twenty-four point strong HOTT1017 Elemental Army pack. Despite its scale "one piece metal monster" is actually 43mm tall and counts as a Behemoth for "Hordes Of The Things", with the fiery figure sitting somewhat centrally upon a 40mm x 40mm base.

Having super-glued the model to its plastic stand, it was primed with two coats of "Vallejo" Sun Yellow and shaded using a little "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade. The neutral creature was then dry-brushed with (more) "Vallejo" Sun Yellow, some Heavy Orange, a little Heavy Red and finally a tiny amount of Dark Vermillion.

Disappointingly, I was not impressed with the final result, as the soft detail on the rounded edges of the elemental's flames didn't seem to take terribly well to this technique. As a result, the monster simply looked predominantly red in colour, so I hastily repeated the dry-brushing process; only this time I sporadically applied my brush-tip to different areas of the miniature rather than simply cover the entire thing with it.

With the latest addition to my Elemental Army completed I have continued to assemble some of the models found inside the Star Trek Adventures: The Next Generation Away Team boxed set by "Modiphius Entertainment". Initially, I had hoped to used most of the contents to make the characters found in The Roleplaying Game Starter Set box. Yet to my utter frustration, my Federation Officers didn't come with separate heads (as I had assumed from the packaging), only incredibly difficult to position wafer-thin limbs.

I have however managed to make some suitable proxies for Lieutenant Commander Lian Zhang (Conn Officer) and Cuellas Zharath, the U.S.S. Magellan's Andorian Chief of Security. But fear the Galaxy-class starship's First Officer, Commander Lenaris Los, will have to become a Vulcan on the tabletop, as the only human male figure seems far more suited to represent Trill, Hanor Del, courtesy of all the equipment the sculpt is carrying.

Lastly, I hope to spend the rest of the year focusing on finishing off some of the past projects I've worked on. With Zomtober very much in view, I thought I'd start by painting some partially-pigmented zombie Judges I've had gathering dust for a couple of years. These "Judge Dredd" miniatures are made up of parts taken from both "Mongoose Publishing" and "Mantic Games" figures, which I then pinned/super-glued together to form a trio of the walking dead...

This 15mm scale metal miniature of a Giant Earth Elemental is produced by “Alternative Armies” and can be bought either separately as blister HOT85 or as part of the company's pre-made twenty-four point strong HOTT1017 Elemental Army pack. Despite its scale the sculpt is actually 60mm tall and counts as a Behemoth for "Hordes Of The Things", with the solitary figure sitting squarely upon a 40mm x 40mm base.

Having super-glued the model its plastic base, it was primed with two coats of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and washed using "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. Quite bizarrely, this regular combination seems to have re-acted rather badly on this occasion and actually caused the "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna to evaporate before my very eyes.

As a result, it took several more layers of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna, plus some shading using "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade" before the large figure was ready to be dry-brushed with (more) "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna. I was then going to further highlight the towering creature with some "Vallejo" Heavy Brown. But was frankly worried that the Elemental wouldn't weather a second abrasive dry-brushing too well, so ultimately decided to simply leave the somewhat uninspiring miniature alone.

Alongside my latest addition to my Elemental Army I have also assembled one of the models found inside the Star Trek Adventures: The Next Generation Away Team boxed set by "Modiphius Entertainment". This somewhat impulse mini-project has been spurred on by my participation in some RPG sessions using the Andorian Lieutenant Thor Th'shrahrir; the experienced Flight Controller aboard the U.S.S. Franz Boas.

My character is currently the pilot of a prototype shuttle-craft which has been dispatched under the watchful eye of Commander Onovren to investigate a faint subspace distress beacon from a nearby system. The RPG is already three sessions into the adventure, and things are definitely heating up now the long-forgotten Earth colony our shuttle-craft's crew have discovered believes we're responsible for sabotaging their town's only source of food and water...

Lastly, I recently uncovered a party of Zygons by "Black Tree Design", which I thought might make for a straightforwardly swift "Doctor Who" force for my homemade rule-set M.I.S.S. The sculpts are based upon the extra-terrestrial shape-shifters from the 1975 televised adventure "Terror of the Zygons", so rather than predominantly paint them "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone as I've repeatedly done with my "Warlord Games" Nu-Who re-imaginings, I went for the more colourful Heavy Orange instead.

All of 2020s postings are now available, and over the next few months I'll be porting across the vast majority of my other postings during the past decade on Blogger. The good news is that Wix allows me to post-date my articles, so instead of overrunning my main feed with old posts, they'll simply slip onto the site in the background and be there to view should a trip down memory lane take your fancy.

Not all my posts will be coming across, and some will be combined so that they better fit the six paragraph style I currently use. For those interested I'll continue to provide some updates here on Blogger regarding what is coming across, as well as some of the other updates Wix seems to offer as an actual website (e.g. An About page, and Projects page).

These four 15mm scale metal miniatures of some Lesser Air Elementals are produced by “Alternative Armies” and can be bought either separately as blister HOT88 Lesser Elementals or as part of the company's pre-made twenty-four point strong HOTT1017 Elemental Army pack. The diminutive sculpts count as Lurkers for "Hordes Of The Things", with two figures sitting upon a rather barren-looking 40mm x 30mm base.

Each model was initially super-glued upon a wooden baton to help my brush-tip better reach all their details, and subsequently primed with two coats of "Vallejo" White. The animated vortexes were then shaded using the "Vallejo" Game Color Wash Pale Grey, before being dry-brushed with (more) White.

I did consider applying a little "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade to folds of the billowing figures, as I have done before when painting 28mm sculpts of Air Elementals. But ultimately, I decided to leave well enough alone. I did however, spot the creatures' mouths with a tiny dollop of "Citadel" Abaddon Black, before covering them with some additional "Vallejo" Pale Grey" so as to tone down its darkness.

In addition to my latest "Alternative Armies" miniatures I have completed a 28mm metal model are from "Westwind Productions" "Secrets Of The Third Reich" blister B-SOTR05 British Commando Carbines. This figure has actually had his Gas Mask Head replaced with one taken from the manufacturer’s excellent ‘Separate Head System’ ‘blister’ SHS-SOTR09 “British Para Heads In Berets With Gas Masks”, as I want him to be part of an Airborne Infantry section on my “Konflikt ‘47” battleground.

The model was undercoated using "Citadel" Doombull Brown and washed with "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. I used some "Vallejo" Charred Brown, "Citadel" Ironbreaker, "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade and "Citadel" Nuln Oil on his rifle, and an old OOP pot of “Citadel” Knarlock Green, Biel-Tan Green and later Devlan Mud on the veteran soldier's body armour.

The Paratrooper's gas mask filter was painted using a combination of "Citadel" Knarloc Green and Devlan Mud, whilst the eye filters were simply ‘picked out’ with Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil. The figure's famous red headwear was pigmented with "Citadel" Mechrite Red, before receiving a couple of generous coats of Bloodletter. This glazing technique was applied as an alternative to my former concoction of "Citadel" Blood Red and Baal Red, as rather disappointingly, both products have long since been withdrawn by “Games Workshop”.

After a weekend tinkering with Wix I'm pleased to say that Fantorical has definitely found itself a new home and over the coming weeks I'll be busy shifting across the majority of this blog's thousand plus postings over to that platform instead.

Why Wix?

Wix has a series of easy-to-use templates with which to create a website from scratch. In addition it also has a Blog page, which acts like a normal blogging platform with posts and tags etc. This makes posting really simple with the platform automatically positioning my pictures, text and captions. The platform also offers a lot more options once you start using the Wix editor to make your own templates. I haven't spent too much time on that yet, but it contains gadgets such as Popular Posts and Labels just like Blogger has.

Wix also seems to allow me to post bigger and better quality pics, so I'm hoping that'll encourage me to produce more Battle Reports. On Blogger these were always a very time-consuming type of post. But having now successfully transferred a few of this year's BatReps over to Wix it seems clear that the platform makes them extremely easy to configure and upload.

How Different Will Fantorical Look On Wix?

As I'm currently using a quite generic template on Wix, Fantorical will look a little less colourful to begin with. I rather like the snapshots personally but the background is too white and somewhat sterile-looking. However, the posts can now be broken down into Categories, so at the top of the page I plan to offer the option of subjects such as Finished Figures, Battle Reports, Wargaming Shows, and Monthly Musings.

What Is Being Transferred Over To Wix?

The vast majority of my postings on Blogger will be moving across to Wix over the coming months. This week's goal is to get all of 2020's articles across and then start posting new content regularly once again. I also aim to bring across my posts from 2010 onwards, as well as some articles from my earlier blogs/painting diaries. Obviously, these will come up on my main feed too, but will clearly be labelled under the category 'From The Vaults' or some such. Personally, I'm always fascinated by my ambitious projects from the past and seeing just how much I accomplished once a new 'shiny' arrived to distract me.

Disappointingly, the comments won't be coming across. I'm a bit gutted by this as I think this is the most important part of Fantorical - where we can discuss thoughts, opinions, suggestions, help, recommendations and advice. I did consider maybe taking a snap shot of the comments and adding them to the relevant post. But that seems a lot of work when the discussions will remain for all to see here on Blogger if anyone is that interested in a five-year old conversation.

What Will Happen To Fantorical On Blogger?

I've no intention of taking Fantorical down on Blogger, and indeed, for the foreseeable still intend to post updates (such as this) on the site. I'll also be signposting visitors to my new posts on Wix when they start.

I do plan on maintaining my comic review site "The Brown Bag" on Blogger until the end of 2020, before shifting that across to Wix. The postings on that are reasonably straightforward, so I'm hoping I'll be able to struggle through until Fantorical is fully ensconced on Wix. The thought of moving two sites over to Wix simultaneously was too much for me to contemplate...

Sadly, Blogger has decided to withdraw the Legacy Button on its platform and as a result I don't plan on using it to produce many more posts for the foreseeable future. I simply cannot stand the new version as it takes me at least four times as long to do anything, and then it still seemingly corrupts fonts and re-formats my postings for no obvious reason.

Indeed, having looked at a few of my older posts, the new Blogger seems to have altered them too, and the thought of going through my backlog of over a thousand posts to see what its altered isn't something I'm willing to do.

I will try and persevere with the new format but certainly won't be posting three times a week anymore - unless the Legacy Button makes a most welcome return. I'll also be exploring other platforms like Wordpress and Facebook as an alternative.

Thanks for visiting and I hope to still comment on people's blogs. But frankly this has really sucked the enthusiasm out of the hobby for me...
