"That'll Be Too Late. He's Dying, Isn't He, Doctor?"

"Have you any idea what it can be, Doctor?"
This 28mm metal model of a Failed Experiment Minion is from code SKU: 26 by “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” and is the first of several miniatures I’m currently painting up to represent some of the hapless staff of botanist Harrison Chase, who have been partially infected by the Krynoid virus. As a result the figure is shown slowly ‘turning’ into one of the alien invader’s plant-zombies, and is my latest entry for Zomtober 2015 and my “Doctor Who And The Seeds of Doom” project. The security guard not only comprises of the company’s “supersize mutated” body but also uses their wonderfully sculpted Failed Experiment Heads and Arms.

The model was initially given an undercoat of “Vallejo” Heavy Blue before I picked out his zipper and name badge clipper with “Citadel” Iron Breaker. Both his jumpsuit and these metallic areas were then washed with Nuln Oil. The lackey’s tendril and fungus-covered face were painted using a combination of Vallejo “Heavy Grey”, “Citadel” Thrakka Green and Carroburg Crimson, and “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. These ‘infections’ were then dry-brushed with more “Vallejo” Heavy Grey. The plant-zombie’s human flesh was painted using Heavy Skintone and some watered down “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade. I left his one remaining eye vacantly white so as to better tie the model into my theme that the person is actually dead and that his cadaver is being animated (as well as eaten) by the extra-terrestrial plant.
'Fattie' Krynoid WIPs - Plenty of detail yet to be picked out on these three walking plant-monsters
Thanks entirely to Jez over on “Carrion Crow’s Buffet” I have bought and starting painting three Gutsoup Golems by “Wizards Of The Coast”. These formidably sized 50mm tall monsters will act as Krynoid ‘Fatties’ when I try and replay the 1976 British Science Fiction television program using the “Zombicide” rule-set at the end of the month. For now I’ve simply used a sharp knife to remove them from their “Dreamblade” stands, re-based them upon 40mm round bases and begun undercoating, washing and dry-brushing them. Despite their somewhat soft sculpting, there is still plenty of raised detail to pick out on the models so as to better tie-them in with the way I’ve painted my (smaller) “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” Spawn miniatures.
Parent Krynoid WIP - It'll take some time to get round to washing and dry-brushing this resin monstrosity
Finally, I have based the tremendously impressive 90mm tall resin model I plan to use to represent the fully-matured parent Krynoid. Also by “Crooked Dice” I hope to use The Weed as an Abomination in my games of “Zombicide” but strongly doubt I’ll be able to get him finished in time for the end of Zomtober 2015. However he should prove a real show-stopper once on the tabletop…

  1. I think this is such an excellent project, especially 're-skinning' Zombicide for it. Kudos sir, kudos. :)

    1. Most kind PulpCitizen and glad you're enjoying the ride. Still a couple of weeks to go and fingers crossed they'll be enough painted lead and plastic for a "Zombicide" game by the end.

  2. Smashing stuff Simon, that finished "Muto" looks excellent, and the "Gutsoup" mini is a real find, all credit to Jez there. But what can I say about your last figure, apart from that is one hell of a monster. Cant wait to see that finished he is going to be awesome!! Brilliant work as always.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. I'm hoping to squeeze in the 'Fatties' as a mid-week posting, and get some more done on the 'infected' and survivors as well. The parent Krynoid does indeed look very nice indeed, but it'll take some considerable hours to get painted and is probably a project in its own right. But time will tell.

  3. Simon, your Krynoid Infected "Runner" has turned out really well. However, whilst the Runner is good, your Fatty is better and your Abomination is best of all. Good call by Jez to use the Gutsoup Golems as Fatties. As for your Crooked Dice figure of The Weed, what an impressive figure! I do hope you can find the time to finish painting it in time for your scenario. This project of yours is going from strength to strength.

    1. Cheers Bryan. I may well need to scale down the number of Runners I was planning on doing in order to try and get the 'Fatties' and some Survivors done. So there's hope for The Weed yet. Although I plan on simply building enough board parts for the tutorial "Zombicide" scenario so I wasn't planning on having an Abomination about for that one :-)

  4. Looks great dude. You've acquired some fine additions from various other sources for it which will work so well.

    1. Thanks Simon. The "Dreamblade" miniatures are a bit left-field. But after Jez suggested them I couldn't help but feel they fitted in wonderfully-well. Hopefully the paint-jobs on them will prove as popular as my "Crooked Dice" Spawn.

  5. Nice figure from Crooked Dice and what you did with his face is amazing.

Oh but those Fatty Krynoids are going to be epic!

    1. Cheers Anne. The "Crooked Dice" Failed Experiment Heads are great imho. But yes the 'Fatties' are rather splendid-looking minis. I hope I can do them justice.

    1. Thanks Michael. I'm having a lot of fun with this so far and with the halfway mark passed, I'm hoping I'll have enough painted for an equally enjoyable BatRep :-)

  7. Nice one. All those spawn models should look really cool when all together on the tabletop. I might grow to like them yet :)

  10. Nice work, Simon! I'm glad that your golems arrived in time so that you could start work on them. Seem to have had less trouble removing them from their bases than I did!
If you need some additional scenery, Petite Properties do a 1/48 scale MDF greenhouse, which could be used intact, partially built or as rubble. Might be worth a look?

    1. Thank you Jez, for your wonderful recommendation on the Gutsoup Golems :-) Having just scanned "Petite properties" there's actually a few things I might want, so I'll wait a little close to Christmas before I splurg - the greenhouse looks excellent though :-) I did take note of your problems with the basing of the minis which is why I used a fresh blade on them and they came off straight away as a result.

    1. Cheers da Gobbo Grotto. Next week will be predominantly spent putting together the "Zombicide" boards for these fellows, so I need to get the 'Fatties' and 'Runners' finished pretty quickly, to give me enough time.

    1. Thanks Dai. The Weed is certainly a big beastie and will take quite a bit of time to complete. But as you say it should dominate the tabletop once finished.

  14. Hmm, I could imagine many extra uses for this collection of miniatures: The Thing (original 1951 film, not the remakes or the superhero), Day of the Triffids, Star Trek...
