"You Fought A Pretender, Flamingo Breath."

"Now I'm going to beat you down, and you tell me how restful it is!"
This 28mm plastic “Wizkids” model of Wildcat is miniature number 14 from the DC Comics “Heroclix” Origin Experience range. A world-class heavyweight boxer, Theodore “Ted” Grant adopted a costumed identity when he became entangled in the criminal underworld and was given “nine lives” as a result of a magical spell. A long-time member of the Justice Society of America he was created by Bill Finger and Irwin Hasen, and made his first comic book appearance within the pages of Issue One of “Sensation Comics” in January 1942.

Having removed the figure from its ‘clicky base’ and superglued him to a “Games Workshop” 25mm circular one, I covered up the boxer’s pre-paint by applying an undercoat of “Citadel” Abaddon Black. I then heavily dry-brushed Wildcat with “Vallejo” Heavy Charcoal to bring out all the sculpt’s muscular detail before heavily washing him with some “Citadel” Nuln Oil. The fighter’s handwraps were painted using a combination of “Vallejo” Heavy Brown and “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Whilst his face was painted with “Vallejo” Heavy Skintone and “Citadel” Reikland Fleshshade.
"Heroclix" WIPs - A Mindless One, She-Hulk and the first of five robot Hulks
In addition to painting up my “DC Comics” “rowdy tough guy” I have also been working on a few more “Heroclix” miniatures for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge; most notably a couple of Mindless One miniatures, a She-Hulk and the first of five robot Hulks which I hope to use as the formidable minions of the X-Men super-villain, Arcade. All of these plastic figures have only been undercoated so far, but the two bulky extra-dimensional cyclopean creatures shouldn’t take too long to complete on account of their rather monotone colour scheme.
Plastic pieces from the "Mars Attacks" Scenery Upgrade Pack
Finally I have been persevering with some of the plastic ruins I acquired from inside the “Mars Attacks” Scenery Upgrade Pack by “Mantic Games”. I plan to use this debris, brick pile and litter bin as part of the three-dimensional “Zombicide” board I’m putting together in order to ‘re-enact’ the 1976 British science fiction television programme “Doctor Who And The Seeds Of Doom”.

  1. And once again I'm introduced to a completely new character - Wildcat! Great job Simon and She Hulk looks interesting too.

    1. Thanks Michael. A simple piece to paint as you can imagine. The pre-paint on She-Hulk was a bit thick tbh, but I'm hoping I can still bring out most of the sculpt's detail.

  2. I look forward to seeing she hulk completed, a nice model. I've never heard of Wildcat before so may have to see if I can find a bit or two about him. Nice stuff as always :)

    1. Cheers Andy. I'm a huge fan of Wildcat as he's in essence just a chap who is good with his fists; one of those simple heroes from the Pulps.

  3. I, too, profess to knowing absolutely nothing about Wildcat, but then again, there is so much about the DC universe I am unfamiliar with.

I may have mentioned this before but She-Hulk is my all-time favourite Marvel superhero. I have this figure and painting her was a labour of love. I'm hoping you do her justice.

    1. Thanks Bryan. Its always a pleasure to educate the "DC Comics" uninitiated ;-) No pressure on doing a good job on the She-Hulk then? Did you go with the white collar, as mine will be in all dark-blue to tie-in with my Mister Fantastic and because the pre-paint is especially thick around that area of the figure?

    2. I painted my She-Hulk in her purple and white costume, although I can see why you fancy painting her as one of the Fantastic Four, due to her association with them as a friend and former team member.

    3. Makes perfect sense Bryan, and you;re quite correct I'll be using her as part of my Fantastic Five line-up ;-)

  4. Wildcat was a core character on my team when I used to play Heroclix :) I had a very Pulp lineup, with him, Dr. Mid-Nite, Dr. Fate, Sandman and a 1930s-style Batman. Great work!

    1. Cheers Bill. Much appreciated. Ted Grant is certainly one of my fave "DC Comics" characters. That sounds a great pulpy line-up you had and hopefully some of the other heroes you mention will receive a lick of the paintbrush at some point :-)

    2. Have you seen the "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series from a few years ago? Wildcat was a frequent guest star and had some of the best moments in the entire series.

    3. Indeed I have Bill. Had to pick up a few DVDs from across the Pond to complete my collection but I regularly watch its episodes and as you say, Wildcat certainly has some great stories in it. My fave being against the Nazi robots :-)

  5. Nice work on wildcat, I cant believe so many people don't know him. I've not seen the Robot hulk figure before that's quite a nice figure, as is the She Hulk, I like the idea of the FF "cozzie", and I didn't even realise they did mini's of the mindless ones, don't tell Jez they would make great He-man enermies (Shush).

    Very interesting...

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Many thanks Roger. I don't think "DC Comics" gives Wildcat much coverage in its "New 52 Universe", and unless you're a JSA devotee I guess he'll sadly slip under most comic reader radars. The robot Hulk mini is nice. Though I'm not sure I'll be saying that after painting five of 'em. The Mindless Ones are one of the more expensive Common "Heroclix" minis I know of, and although reasonable in the US, cost a small fortune over here (if you can get them)... Hence I've only ever been able to afford two.

    1. Cheers Gordon. I've badly under-estimated how long the "Zombicide" board and scenery would take me for "Seeds of Doom". Although once complete I'll be able to use it for loads of other BatReps too. Just glued down all the interior/cobbled tiles, so hopefully the board itself will be finished by next weekend.

  7. And yet more Heroclix goodies...Nice job on Wildcat, Simon, as he is essentially another one coloured costumed hero, although his wristbands and mask do break up the monotony of the costume. I am familiar with the character, but always thought his costume was a little...silly. I also like the Mindless Ones figures, but as noted, they do seem to be popular and therefore pricey. :(
And I too have that She-Hulk figure, but once I'm done with her, she won't be She-Hulk anymore...

    1. Thanks Jez. Not sure why its taken me so long to finish him, though his handwraps were a real pain to get right, as was his face - as it was rather inaccessible due to the pose. Mindless Ones seem to be rather rare in the UK sadly. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your She-Hulk then :-)

    2. She's already partially done, but there's ghosts, ghostbusters and Eternians before I get back to supers. That's if I ever get the bloody firehouse done, whinging about which can be found in my latest post.

    3. I know the feeling Jez, I have a load of "Battlestar Galactica" minis from last month's theme I still haven't finished. But the AHPC has me concentrating on "Star Wars" for this week's Themed submission. I thought your Firehouse looked very good btw and was actually considering getting one myself at some point...

  8. Nice work and what a great idea to use the Ma terrain for zombicide it will certainly give it a great 3d look to the game.

    1. Thanks Simon. A simple paint-job for Wildcat. But its another mini down and let me concentrate on some others for the AHPC. Still a fair bit of "Mantic Games" scenery to paint. But once done I'm hoping it will be impressive-looking.

  9. More superheroes - good! But the terrain pieces are what really caught my attention. Are there any more of these to come?

    1. Cheers Hugh. Yep, plenty more pieces of terrain coming as i'm hoping to get a large part of my "Zombicide" 3D board finished by the end of the week. Loads of "Mantic Games" plastics to paint as a result :-)

  12. She-Hulk! Very cool sculpt that should fit in nicely with your other green-skinned heroics.

My son has the Robot Hulk. (He was rather disappointed he didn't get Red Hulk though) I've been toying with the idea of repainting him too.

The Mars Attacks terrain looks very nice - do you think it would make for suitable WW2 28mm scenery?

    1. Thanks Dai. I'm not that taken with the She-Hulk sculpt tbh. But we'll see how it goes with an all dark blue FF uniform. I have the first Red Hulk sculpt, which was horrifically expensive in the UK and not cheap in the US (where I bought mine from) either. It is though a cracking model and far better than the robot Hulk sculpts, so if you can track one down... it'd be worth it imho. The Mars Attacks scenery will certainly be doubling for "Bolt Action" etc when its all painted, so that's a big yes in my books, my friend.

    2. That's what I had hoped to hear. Thanks mate! Perhaps a purchase for a little later in the year. :)

    3. No worries Dai. One of my goals for this year is to paint a couple of "Bolt Action" forces up and get some BatReps in :-)
