"Imps Are Generally The Smallest And Least Powerful Of Demons."

"A mass of flesh defined solely by a giant mouth..."
This 28mm metal model of an Imp is made by “North Star Military Figures” and can be bought together with a somewhat larger Minor Demon as code FGV302 from their “Frostgrave” range. As I wanted this miniature to be similar in appearance and colour to the “spindly insect creature with vestigial wings” depicted upon the blister I initially undercoated him with some “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey and painted his legs with Heavy Red. I then washed the grey areas with “Citadel” Nuln Oil and the red areas with Carroburg Crimson.

In order to try and make the Imp appear as if he was transforming from stone to demonic flesh, I dry-brushed the upper part of the model with more “Vallejo” Heavy Bluegrey, and allowed the paint to just slightly encroach upon the legs and abdomen as well. I then further tried to merge the two dissimilar coloured areas together by dry-brushed Heavy Red over the adjoining areas as well. The creature’s toes, head-horn and wing-horns were ‘picked out’ using a combination of “Vallejo” White and “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Whilst his eyes were created using “Vallejo” Dark Vermillion and “Citadel” Carroburg Crimson.
White Gorilla WIP - Having finished blending my Imp's red and grey areas, I've started work on this great ape.
Having finished the first of my "Frostgrave" demons, I have since started work on this formidably large White Gorilla, as well as a couple of other models based upon the "many dangerous animals [which] now call the area home." Having finished dry-brushing the hairy brute "Vallejo" White over a Pale Grey wash, I've started to pick out his areas of flesh. Though I'm not sure I'll be sticking with the black tongue, finger and toe-nails depicted on the miniature's packaging...

In addition to the quite considerable number of "North Star Military Figures" littering my painting table, I am still managing to progress some more "Heroclix" models. This H.R. Giger "Horrorclix" alien figure (on a 40mm round base) is as overly large as it was ridiculously expensive. But should make for an impressive tabletop extra-terrestrial once I've lightly dry-brushed some additional finishing highlights to it's carapace.
"Wizkids" WIPs - H.R. Giger Alien, eight OMAC Operatives and the fifth Crimson Dynamo.
I actually own eight of the OMAC Operative models, having ordered a load of them from across the Pond after 'successfully' painting a pilot piece back in September 2015. However, having immediately undercoated them all upon their arrival, I have never managed to find the time to wash them with some "Citadel" Nuln Oil and start building up the cyborgs' metallic blue highlights. Until now at least...

Lastly this slightly under-sized thinnish sculpt of the fifth Crimson Dynamo, as worn by Dmitri Bukharin, is perhaps unsurprisingly proving rather simple to paint as a result of it being entirely red and therefore simply needing a bit of dry-brushing and a couple of ink washes being applied to it. However, as I've subsequently discovered I also own the "Heroclix" model of Gennady Gavrilov, the eighth Crimson Dynamo, I may now wait until both figures are finished before submitting them to the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge.

  2. Good work all around, Simon. I'm impressed with the subtle way you merged the stone to flesh on your imp.
I like all of your WIP figures, but the Alien really stands out. If it's not too rude to ask, just how "ridiculously expensive" was this figure? I'm curious because I have a set of Horrorclix Aliens and Predators going spare.

    1. Cheers Bryan. The Imp was a very much appreciated "Secret Santa" gift, so well worth painting up as well as I could. The Alien was about £6 as memory serves, and sold as a single. I had been after a boxed set for ages. But they go for about £50-£80, so in the end settled for a single mini just so I had one. Of course then "Prodos Games" won the licence and brought out the official Alien minis. But the "Horrorclix" ones continue to hold their price. I've now got hold of a chaep(ish) £30 Predator boxed set, but would be happy to chat through a price for the Aliens one if you want to email me?

    1. Cheers Michael. It is a lovely little fellow. I really wish I could buy more of just that sculpt and do a few of them in different transformation stages (and colours). I still have a load of "Prodos Games" "Warzone" to paint up. But once done I'll be looking at "AvP" myself. It does look good doesn't it :-)

  5. Nice work, Simon. I'm guessing the Challenge gives you an incentive to power through your lead (and plastic) pile. Although I have been missing your feedback on my blog. I'm picturing you feverishly painting away, dosed high on caffeine into the wee hours, muttering "just one more figure..." ;-)

    1. Thanks Jez. I am a bit busy painting at present but have been trying to keep up with blog comments etc. This week's AHPC "Star Wars" submission took quite a while to get finished. But I'm not planning anywhere near as many minis for the next couple of entries so I'm hoping to spend some time visiting my fave blogs :-)

    1. Cheers Jez. Never heard of them before and I see they do a load of "Tablescape" etc so I'll have a good look about and see what other bargains I can pick up. Thanks for the link :-)

    1. My willpower isn't and I'm desperately trying to stick to my New Year's Resolution of only having to paint up three minis for every one model I buy...

  8. Nice work as usual Simon, I am struck down with a head cold at the moment so haven't even touched a paintbrush this week, this is the first time I've got in front of the PC for a few days too.

I did put a reply on Jez's blog that might interest you.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I hope you get better soon my friend. I thought it only fair to answer you on Jez's blog, rather than this one. But your SJS etc is sat in an envelope. I'm just waiting on a "Marvel Worldwide" back issue I've picked up for you ;-)

  9. Your demon looks great Simon! Certainly useful for a number of settings as well. The others are off to a good start as well.

  10. Good effect on that imp. I really like the idea of it changing from inanimate to otherwise.

The ape, what range is he from?

    1. Cheers Dai. The White Gorilla is by "North Star Military Figures" and is from their "Frostgrave" range. A terrific model imho.

  11. Strangely, my first thought was that the imp was changing *to* stone. Then I read your description that he (she? it?) is changing *from* stone. Oh, well - same difference, I suppose :-) .

    1. If it was the other way Hugh I'd have dry-brushed the Imp red and then grey as opposed to grey and then red ;-)
