"Warlords Of Atlantis" - WIP - Part One

Warlords of Atlantis WIPs  - Once washed with Black Shade these models should be fairly straightforward to finish
Despite ‘Mo’vember 2015’ starting this week and my attention primarily turning to a number of heavily-bearded wizards, apprentices and soldiers for "Frostgrave", I have also decided to try and potter away on a number of figures made by “Antediluvian Miniatures” in order to try and replicate the 1978 British Science Fiction/Fantasy film “Warlords Of Atlantis”.

Distributed by Columbia Pictures, this 96 minute-long movie concerned two adventurers discovering the lost city of Atlantis and battling both the advanced civilization’s spear-wielding armored warriors, as well as an assortment of giant sea-monsters. “Antediluvian Miniatures” actually sell a very nice looking range of Crystal Palace-influenced resin and metal dinosaurs. But to begin with I thought I’d try and paint up a number of their Guardians of Lemuria. These cracking 28mm models are absolutely spot on for the motion picture’s Atlantean troopers and their leader, Atmir.
Atlantean Guardian WIPs - These deep-sea soldiers come in five different poses
As usual, when I approach painting a group of the same (or similar figures), I plan to concentrate on one or two test models first. Though on this occasion I’ve decided to also paint the Warlord of Lemuria as well. As a result I’ve painted the rifle-carrying soldiers’ plate armour with “Citadel” Ironbreaker” and their eyeless-helmets with Mithril Silver.
Doug McClure WIP - Early days yet for the American adventurer as I need to finish painting his flesh areas
I have also started to continue painting a couple of other figures by “Antediluvian Miniatures” which I began to work on a couple of months ago. Clearly inspired by the 1976 movie “At The Earth’s Core” and the 1966 'dinosaur flick' "One Million Years B.C." these wonderful sculpts of Doug McClure and Raquel Welch should hopefully be finished within the next few weeks.

  1. They're off to a great start, Simon.

    Very unusual minis, those troopers.

    1. Thanks Finch. These are full of childhood memories as I still remember going to the cinema to see this movie. They should prove an interesting side-project for the next few weeks.

    1. Thanks Roger. Hopefully I'll be able to potter about on these once and a while over the next few weeks or so and get them finished. I'll certainly be interested to see how you paint up yours... and they'll look great going up against those dinosaurs of yours. They'd make a good BatRep hint... hint ;-)

  4. A nice change of pace for you, Simon. As you know, I'm also a fan of the Antediluvian Miniatures range, so I'm looking forward to seeing you finish these fine-looking figures.

    1. Cheers Bryan. I've a few ranges on the table this month having spent most of last month concentrating on my "Crooked Dice" lead mountain. Indeed I hope to have at least one or two postings of some minis that will baffle and bewilder :-)

    1. They'll well worth it Michael. I managed to order two sets as soon as they advertised them as I thought they'd sell rather quickly. I think your delicate brushwork will really bring out their detail.

  6. Should've known Raquel had her own mini somewhere...

These are very interesting mate. I really like the featureless helmets of the troops.

    1. The guardians scared me to death at the cinema when they first rose from the waters. Scary stuff. Not sure why no-one has 'borrowed' their look before now tbh. Hopefully I'll be able to do them justice.

  8. You obviously have far too much time on your hands....lol. Nice work, Simon. At some point I will be getting some of the Atlantean troops too as I also remember going to see that movie and they are cool. I managed to slap a bit of paint on my first Frostgrave Mo'vember figure, although I forgot about daylight saving and had to do so under artificial light, so just block painting for now. Hoping to have him done by the weekend, unless real life gets in the way again.

    1. Thanks Jez. I do try and get an hour a day of painting in when I can... Just waiting for my "Frostgrave" warband's glue to dry and they should be based and under-coated for Friday. Really looking forward to all your Mo'Vember minis :-)

  9. I don't remember the film "Warlords of Atlantis" at all, but I'm fond of the whole Lost World/Hollow Earth genre and am watching this with interest.

    1. Well worth digging out a copy of the DVD if you can C6 as its Doug McClure's best imho. I was actually thinking about using 7th Voyages for the ruleset for this genre, so I'd be very interested in your thoughts on that, as I know you play those rules quite a bit.

    2. For me, it would be between 7th Voyage and Pulp Alley (particularly with the Perilous Island expansion, for monsters). Either should work well for anything "Doug McLure"-related :-) . Of course, 7th Voyage doesn't have rules for firearms or other 19th/20th century items, but these could be imported from 7TV easily enough.

There's also Mission St. Mary, from Two Hour Wargames; that might be worth a look.

I know that Crooked Dice has no plans to update 7th Voyage, in the way that 7TV is being revamped into 2nd Edition. If this was available then I'd probably use it without thinking twice! Such an update (as a private project) is on my "would be nice to do sometime" list...

    3. Many thanks for the advice C6. If I do go down the "7th Voyage" line then I'd be more than happy to send you what stat lines I come up with :-)

  10. Nice work Bk! I re-watched that film just a couple of weeks ago, great fun it was too. I do hope you return to your Dr Who project soon, I'm eagerly awaiting your batrep with those amazing figures.

    1. Cheers Bob. Have no worries about Dr Who though. SJS is done and just waiting for some varnishing etc and I have another 'infected' almost ready too. I just need to grit the terrain tiles tbh and the BatRep will be up :-)
