"Pendraken Miniatures" - WW2 Russian DP LMG Team

"The Degtyarev DP light machine gun has proven her worth over countless Twentieth Century conflicts..."
These four stands of 10mm models predominantly contain the figures from code SV3 DP LMG Team by “Pendraken Miniatures” and come from their World War Two range of Russian infantry. As I thought my 30 x 40mm plastic bases would look a little barren with just two of the prone soldiers lying upon them, I also added a single model from code SV20 Riflemen, winter equipment. This extra figure also provided the added bonus of allowing me to more easily pick the Degtyaryov machine gun team up off the battlefield and reposition it during a wargame.

Once superglued upon their stand (or upon a piece of wood in the case of the riflemen) all of the miniatures were undercoated with “Citadel” Calthan Brown and then washed with “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. The models were then dry-brushed with more “Citadel” Calthan Brown in order to ‘pick out’ the detail of each sculpt. I then applied a layer of Abaddon Black to the heads, hands, feet, weapons and equipment before I started to ‘colour’ them in. I used Knarloc Green with a Thrakka Green wash for the soldier’s helmets, and “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna with more “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade for their rifles, bags and straps. All of the light machine guns, their circular ammo clips, water canteens and Mosin-Nagant barrels were painted with “Citadel” Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil.
DP LMG Team WIPs - Phase (1) black lining and flesh, Phase (2) brown and metal, and Phase (3) green and tan
Finally I gave all their faces and hands a ‘touch’ of “Vallejo” Heavy Skintone and was planning on then using an old pot of “Citadel” Flesh Wash. But having applied some to one ‘unlucky’ soldier I found the ink to be far too strong despite having considerably watered it down. As a result I ordered a pot of the Reikland Fleshshade. This Shade isn’t as good as the company’s Ogryn Flesh but it will suffice for now. Finally, having based, flocked and varnished each stand I applied a double coat of “Citadel” Snow. I like to do this in two phases as I try to make it look as if some of it has turned to sludge on the outer edges, yet is still heaped in other places.
Werewolves WIPs - Undercoated with Adeptus Battlegrey, Khemri Brown and Dark Flesh
Unsurprisingly I’m still currently working on this fortnight’s personal painting challenge. I have though finished gluing together the eight 28mm metal He-Wolf figures by “SLAP Miniatures” I need to paint, and undercoated the final three lycanthropes. I’ve actually nicknamed this trio ‘The Brothers Oop’ as I’ve decided to paint them using three old out of production pots previously sold by “Citadel”; Khemri Brown, Adeptus Battlegrey and Dark Flesh.

  1. I've noted your method with the 10mils and seeing that snow is giving me ideas.

Oh, but what happened to a Salute post?

    1. Thanks Roy, a nice simple block colour and wash with the odd bit of dry-brushing tends to be my approach to any scale :-) I tend to keep my Wargaming Show purchases quiet as I like to suddenly post something which I haven't mentioned before 'out of the blue'. It was a cracking show though and I did pick up several new ranges, including one I'm already busily undercoating as its leapt to the head of the queue. Hopefully I'll get to meet you in the flesh there next year?

    2. Possibly. I'll certainly 'do' Salute one year, just to say that I have.

    3. I look forward to it then Roy, and seeing what ideas you have with the snow :-)

  2. Great to finally put a face to the name and what a small world it is what with you knowing the Provost Marshal! I'm looking forward to seeing more of the Slap werewolves as I've got them on the periphery of the table, I was considering lopping the tails off mine though.

    1. Very good to see you too Michael, and indeed it is a small world :-) I did think twice about the tails myself, but thought they looked rather good on Vampifan's website and without them the models do appear a little two-dimensional imho. I do look forward to seeing what you do with them though either way.

  3. The more I see of 10mm figures, the more I like them.

Interesting werewolves - nobody can be in much doubt about *their* gender!

    1. Thanks C6. I'll be posting up a 10mm Batrep featuring a small part of my WW2 Winter War collection within the next couple of days, which hopefully will tempt you even more. I have seen some paint schemes which make it blatantly clear as to the gender of these werewolves. but mine will simply be the same colour as their fur :-)

  4. As always, an interesting post, Simon. 10mm gaming is definitely not my cup of tea but that takes nothing away from your fine painting and basing. I do love your idea of calling this trio of Werewolves the Brothers Oop! :)

    1. Cheers Bryan. I actually thought as much, which is why I included a small update concerning the werewolves. I'm afraid I very do enjoy 10mm gaming, and 6mm for that matter. But these days I tend to find the vast majority of my time is spent in 'heroic scale'. Thats one of the reasons why I enjoyed doing this personal painting challenge last year, as it got me painting and gaming periods/scales I don't give as much time to as I'd like. Still as with you and the Chibis I'm sure I'll soon get it out of my system ;-)

  5. Those are some smashing looking 10mm bases. As you know I ratter partial to a bit of 10mm gaming myself, thanks for giving Myles a bit of a push on that front at Salute by the way, I fear he's slid back towards his "Dystopian" addiction again though. Remember you paint for yourself not anyone else, so don't worry if you think your post readers aren't interested in what you paint (I am by the way). Well I'm off to paint some superheroes, I've got forty to get done by Saturday!!! (only kidding), you'll be glad to hear that it actually is boats.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Many thanks Roger. More 10mm tomorrow as I'll be posting a BatRep involving these little fellows next. I've actually got three finished "Heroclix" ready for posting, so plenty to keep everyone happy over the next fortnight or so. Plus as I picked up a second "Deadzone" mat at Salute (along with the boxed set), I'm hoping to have a Star Wars Batrep done for the weekend. Your talents definitely lie with sea-faring vessels so I'd pack all those super-heroes away if I were you ;-) As an aside I've got six Cyclopean aliens on my table ready to paint, so get your caster ready for another order :-) P.S. Any chance of some pics of those astronaut models you're selling please?

  6. Nice work on some really tiny mini's Bk. The more you show those werewolves the more I seem to like them. Rock out with your cock out! LOL!

    1. Cheers Bob. I know I suggested to Bryan you could always cut certain appendages off when he posted the ones he'd painted. But I couldn't face doing that myself. However my werewolves won't be as blatantly 'proud' as his as they'll be the colour of the fur :-)
