"Blos So Folt Do No Cro Blo Cos So Ro."

"Language assimilated. Designation Earth English. You will be catalogued."
These three "finely-sculpted" somewhat over-sized 28mm scale "pewter" models of the "mercenary intergalactic police force" known as the Judoon are produced by “Warlord Games” and were some of the first miniatures made available as part of the Nottingham-based company's "officially approved" "Doctor Who: Into The Time Vortex" range. Slightly two-dimensional in their poses, the figures are based upon the "black armoured Rhinoceroid bipeds" first seen in the 2007 BBC television story "Smith And Jones" and as a result will help represent the Shadow Proclamation on my "Doctor Who" tabletop.

Initially primed with two layers of "Citadel" Abaddon Black, the "logical but stupid" mercenaries were subsequently dry-brushed with "Vallejo" German Grey and heavily washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil. Their collars and toecaps were then 'picked out' using a combination of Ironbreaker and more Nuln Oil, whilst their equipment (energy-weapons, scanners and translator devices) were painted using "Vallejo" Heavy Red and "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson.
"Troop five, floor one. Troop six, floor two. Identify humans and find the transgressor. Find it."
Lastly, the Judoon commander had his bare head coated with "Vallejo" Iraqi Sand and washed with "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. The "single-minded" extra-terrestrial's teeth were then highlighted with "Vallejo" White and "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade.

Having taken the step to start collecting this somewhat oddly-scaled range of "Doctor Who" miniatures, and use them to play some games of "7TV" by "Crooked Dice Game Design Studio", it seemed obvious to me that I was inevitably going to need to purchase at least one of "Warlord Games" Doctor and Companions boxed sets. As a result I picked up the models of the Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, Rose Tyler, Wilfred Mott and Donna Noble from "Caliver Books" at "Warfare".
"Doctor Who" WIPs - The Tenth Doctor, Wilfred Mott and Martha Jones
Despite being somewhat static in their poses, these figures really do capture the likenesses of their television counterparts rather well, with Sylvia Noble's father, as portrayed by Bernard Cribbins, proving an especially endearing sculpt. Indeed, I have been so taken with the elderly National serviceman that I've already started painting him up as my fourth and final Mo'Vember 2016 submission.

  1. Excellent! Why did I find myself chanting the title of this post several times??

    1. Thanks Ray. I was certainly doing the chant on several occasions whilst I was painting them!!

  2. Is this some sort of payback? Tempting me over to the Dark Side? And those plastic Daleks and Cybermen look pretty...and the set of metal Cybermen from all eras of Doctor Who look even prettier...

    1. Absolutely it is payback Gordon. I've only seen the cover for the All-era Cyberman box though. Do you know of any piccies of the models then?

    3. Cheers Bryan. I've seen those plastic ones before. Its piccies of the "Cyberman" ten figure pewter set released to mark the 50th Anniversary of The Cybermen, that I've yet to see. It will supposedly feature 10 key designs of the Mondas giants from over the years :-)

  3. I agree that the sculpting does capture the likenesses of the characters very well, although i don't like either version of the Doctor. I will be watching with interest as you progress with these. As I already have 28mm versions of Pertwee, Smith and Capaldi, I probably won't be investing heavily in this range, but the Zygons, Daleks and Cybermen are very tempting...

    1. Thanks Jez. I think you'll like the "Warlord Games" Zygons quite a bit when I post them up. Plus there's plenty of Tennant stuff coming soon too!!

  4. What I love about Dr Who is that he is the only TV male leading character/hero who solves problems with wit and not strength or violence.

For this reason I steer clear of Dr WHO as a wargame as I now so many players who would look for the biggest GUN at every opportunity.

Nice job on the painted figures. And knowing you there will be more in a day or two.

    1. Cheers Clint. There will probably be quite a few "Doctor Who" related posts over the next few months; especially with the AHPC.

  5. Those Judoon must have been so easy to paint. They have come out very well. How nice to see a figure of Wilfred Mott. I'm surprised he was chosen to be part of this set but his presence is certainly welcome in my opinion.

  7. Wilfred was the only good thing about Donna - she was worst companion ever imo. Wilfred tho had all sorts of depth and appreciable characteristics. Those sculpts really are very good.

Judoon look the part for sure! I like the red you've gone with.

    1. Thanks Dai. Much appreciated. I must confess the three "Big Finish" audio plays which have just been released heralding the return of the Tenth Doctor and Donna are awful, imho, and really do make her sound terribly annoying; I didn't mind her on the TV tbh. As for the Judoon I wanted to go with a red that wasn't too bright, so the "Vallejo" Heavy Red was nicely dark.

  8. Nicely painted stuff Simon, not really my thing though, I have no idea who Wilfred is to be honest (wish I could say the same for Martha and Tennent). But I'm sure he'll be a nicely painted mini in the end.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. Wilfred was definitely one of the the stand-out companions during David Tennant's tenure as the Doctor... and how can you not like the episode "Smith And Jones"; its a cracker imho.

    2. Sorry don't remember that one, I might have given up on it by then. Only saw the odd Tennent episode, one of Matt Smiths (the first one) and one of the new blokes, (coz it had lots of Daleks in the advert, incuding a special weapons one!), but that was more than enough for me. I know a lot of people love the new stuff, but I just can't take to it myself, it's just not Dr Who to me.

      Cheers Roger.

    3. No worries Roger. I'm not a fan of much of the new stuff myself. But thought Tennant was good, and certainly Bernard Cribbins as Wilf. Unfortunately all of the current "Warlord Games" stuff is 'new who', so you'll be seeing a fair portion of it over the next few months.

  9. Nicely done with the Judoon there. :)

How are you finding the Warlord stuff?

    1. Thanks Leon. I'm having a real blast with the "Warlord Games" miniatures tbh. I've since painted Wilfred Mott and a few Zygons too, with some more of the Tenth Doctor's companions ready for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge in a month's time. I certainly recommend them :-)
