"...And so began the war to control the fairest and most fertile of realms." |
These two 28mm Plaguebearers come from the “Age Of Sigmar” Plaguebearers of Nurgle boxed set, and have been painted similarly to the many other lesser daemons of the Plague Lord that I have recently added to my Befouling Host of Nurgle. Unfortunately the only difference is that, having been annoyingly forced to replace my usual wash of choice, "Citadel" Thrakka Green, with the "Games Workshop" Shade, Biel-Tan Green, this duo have 'turned out' a little greener in colour than their brethren; something which will hopefully become less obvious once I have added several more models to my Plaguebearer Unit...
With just two more "footsoldiers of Nurgle" left to complete before my current unit stands at an impressive, though far from finished, twenty miniatures, I have momentarily taken some respite by applying my brush to the "Warlord Games" figure of Dr Sim. The sculpt to this villainous extra-terrestrial is arguably as underwhelming as the plot to the 2016 Christmas television special, "The Return Of Doctor Mysterio", from whence he originated, but it has resultantly meant I have made some 'quick-time' progress on the model's painting.

Indeed, I'm now hoping to use the brain-swapping member of The Shoal of the Winter Harmony as the lead antagonist for the first in a series of "Doctor Who" related scenarios using the "Mutants And Death Ray Guns" rule-set by "Ganesha Games". Admittedly, on paper the 'New York businessman' himself isn't going to prove all that formidable a foe, being simply armed with a pistol (and perhaps the mutation Terror. Yet as the leader of a Zygon invasion Dr Sim will potential be able to "activate a group of two to five models with a single die roll. A special ability which could cause even the Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones and their Judoon allies a few headaches...
Moving on to my current "Beyond The Gates Of Antares" project, I have finished assembling and undercoating the remaining metal miniatures from the Mhagris Feral Squad boxed set. Two of these Freeborn soldiers carry the unit's obligatory mag weapons. But in addition, one of them is armed with a magnetic X-launcher; a firearm "which can hurl shot over the heads of enemies and drive targets from cover."

All of these models have initially been primed using "Vallejo" Heavy Blue, and will subsequently have their clothing, pouches and undersuits 'picked out' with Heavy Brown and Steel Grey. I'm hoping this colour scheme will provide a stark contrast to the orange and grey palette of my Boromites, and with the "war-like savages" white hair and their tribal markings, genuinely make them stand out on the tabletop.
Excellent work on the latest Plaguebeaers; the different wash should be fine when massed up as a unit I reckon. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Leon, and I very much hope so. Certainly when there's thirty of them, it'll be almost a 50:50 split.
DeleteApologies for the lack of comments, Simon, it's been a hobby-free couple of weeks and I'm just catching up.
ReplyDeleteAnother eclectic selection of figures. Surely it must be almost time to show a group shot of your befouling host?
And I agree with your opinion on the last Doctor Who christmas special. Whilst it was fun, it was slight and ultimately slightly unsatisfying - like expecting a steak and being served a quiche. Although I did enjoy the season premiere of the new series...Movellans! In all their ridiculous disco wig glory! However, strictly speaking, it was the wrong model of Dalek. And I now want a Nardole figure and think I may have found a suitable proxy, which I may very well be picking up on Saturday, along with some other figures destined for my Doctor Who project.
Might even manage to buy you that tea this year... ;-)
No worries Jez. I assure you there's no expectation that people need comment on all my postings - just every other one ;-)
DeleteOnce I've posted up the final two Plaguebearers (for now at least), then I'll be doing a shot of the entire unit. I've a second Herald of Nurgle on the painting table, so a Host shot will follow once he's completed.
Nardole would be cool, and certainly some Movellans (I own a number of the "Black Tree" ones. I too was disappointed we didn't see the classic blue/grey Daleks rather than the latest incarnation!! Who does that show's continuity!?!
No tea required at "Salute" my friend, but we do need to meet up so I can get those two "Doctor Who" minis to you ;-)
I'm assuming the standard 1pm 'bloggers meet' will be occurring at the same place as last year? I'm hoping to get there a bit earlier than last year, so I get ALL the freebies. I will drop you a PM with my mobile number before Saturday, in case you want to meet up before one.
DeleteAnd seeing the Movellans in Who made me want some, so I'll be keeping an eye on Black Tree's site for an appropriate sale.
Yep... and I too was very close to digging out my Movellans and giving them a lick of paint, Jez.
DeleteWhilst I do like the sculpt of Dr Sim, he is such a bland figure he could be used in a number of roles, not least as a James Bond stand-in. I was underwhelmed at the recent Christmas special and the start of the new series, although I have to agree with Carrion crow that the inclusion of the Movellans was a nice touch, albeit far too brief. For me, Doctor Who will take a long time to recover since the loss of Clara Oswald. But... I'll still watch it!
ReplyDeleteDr Sim isn't one of the most dynamic sculpts, but he is already finished, and whilst I was disappointed he didn't come with some brains in jars, I'm hoping he'll make an excellent villain until I find time to paint someone more... masterful ;-)
DeleteI thought the new companion looked rather promising; albeit I understand she's already been written out before the next Christmas Special?
Dr Who has been terrible since Capaldi took over. He has to be the least favourite Doctor of all time.
ReplyDeleteAs a life-long Colin Baker fan (good ole "Sixie"), I'm very grateful to Capaldi and his stories, as they actually make most of Colin's look good ;-)
DeleteThe Plaguebearers are fantastically gruesome! Very much looking forward to hearing about your DW M&DRG games!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gordon. I hope you appreciate you started all this "Mutants And Death Ray guns" nonsense!! ;-)
Delete:D
Delete:-)
DeleteI must be a minority I think, I really like this Doctor Sim mini. He looks suitably 70`s style to look quite cool, if that makes any sense lol.
ReplyDelete(Simon, email has been sent to you, looking for your address asap so himself can send `it` to you in tomorrow`s post).
I think a lot of the dislike Ref Dr Sim is the terrible Christmas Special he was in, as well as the sculpt. He's a chap with a pistol...
DeleteI must confess he certainly struck me as an odd choice for one of "Warlord Games" latest releases for their new game. As its primarily Daleks vs Cybermen (to begin with), I'd have thought a Davros or Lumic mini would've been higher on their agenda.
I can see versatility in the dr Sim sculpt if nothing else Simon. The plague bearers work well with the new green so don't worry, plus they can't all look the same Jin can they.
ReplyDeleteSee you Saturday!
Thanks Andy. C u Saturday :-)
DeleteVariation in the unit can add interest Simon, so wouldn't worry. Dr Sim as you say is quite uninspiring but means as a model is surprisingly versatile.
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing the colour scheme on the feral unit
Cheers Dave. I hope once I've painted up some more Plaguebearers the variation will look like I've done it on purpose ;-)
DeleteAs usual, your Plaguebearers look great, even with a different shade of green wash. (Which I think once all mixed in with the rest of the unit will actually make for a better looking unit overall.)
ReplyDeleteDoc Sim looks more of a Bond villain than a Dr Who character. Strange.
Thanks Dai. I agree that once there's a few more 'greener' plaguebearers mixed into the pot, they'll look more of a motley crew. Dr Sim is now finished, so hopefully you'll see the finished item next week :-)
DeleteThey look great. I am sure the different washes will intermingle nicely enmass.
ReplyDeleteCheers Simon. I think a unit of 30 Plaguebearers with a 50:50 mix will look just fine as you say.
