"Please Stand By. You Will Be Upgraded. Welcome To The Cyberiad."

"No need to panic, my young friends. We all know there are no more living Cybermen."
This 38mm tall "exquisitely sculpted pewter" Cyberman figure is produced by “Warlord Games” and can be found within the company's excellent "Nightmares In Silver" Cybermen Collector's Set 1966-2013. Sculpted to replicate the fictional race of cyborgs as they appeared in Neil Gaiman's 2013 television story "Nightmare In Silver", this new design arose "as the result of a deep space meeting of Mondas and Cybus Cybermen; whose amalgamation resulted in an upgraded, stronger and superior model."

The figure was primed with "Citadel" Abaddon Black and treated to a double coat of Ironbreaker. It was then washed with Nuln Oil and had its famous 'tear-drop' eyes and mouth slit additionally darkened with a small amount of Abaddon Black, before being dry-brushed with more "Ironbreaker". As the Cyberman's dynamic pose rather attracts the eye when compared to the more sedentary look of its "emotionless space-faring" compatriots, I decided to make it a Cyber Leader, and resultantly picked out his chest piece with a combination of Nihilakh Oxide and Drakenhof Nightshade.
"We've upgraded ourselves. The next model will be undefeatable."
Alongside this "upgraded Cyber War" Cyberman I have also painted three more of the cyborgs' plastic models as found inside the "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" "fast-paced tabletop miniatures game" starter box. Unsurprisingly, these figures were painted exactly the same way as the version which threatened the Eleventh Doctor and Clara in the "military-controlled, extraterrestrial theme park Hedgewick's World of Wonders."

Recently, fellow bloggers PulpCitizen ("Eclectic Gentleman Tabletop Gamer") and Simon Quinton ("Brummie's Wargaming Blog") have been busy finishing off a handful of miniatures in order to play-test the rule-set "Squad Wars". I must confess to having been green with envy at their marvellous paint-jobs and the fact that the figures they've been posting about are all inspired by the "G.I. Joe" franchise.
"G.I. Joe" WIPs - Destro, Major Budd, Sergeant Slaughter and Snake Eyes
To be honest I know very little about the "line of action figures produced and owned by the toy company Hasbro", but quickly became infected by the guys' enthusiasm for the "National Toy Hall of Fame" product. Unfortunately however, the models they own are from a private collection and not therefore commercially available and as a result I have been struggling to acquire even one of them...

Until now that is, when I finally (and very luckily) was sent a few spares to help me join in with the chaps' "Real American Hero" obsession. As a result I have immediately based up the Iron Grenadier known as Destro, Cobra Command mercenary Major Budd, and G.I. Joe loyalists Sergeant Slaughter and Snake Eyes.

  2. Superb job Simon, although I don't think I knew that Cybermen could run? Everyday is a school day. :)

    1. Cheers Michael. The upgraded Cyber War Cyberman's pose is rather eye-catchingly different from what has been seen before, isn't it.

  3. Godo luck with the G.I. Joe figures....sounds like you have caught the `bug` as much as we have here for Frostgrave minis. Funny isn't it, how simple little things can sometimes capture our imaginations and our hearts, and cause us to go hyper immersion into realms of blissful rapture.

    1. I think my thoughts around "G.I. Joe" are probably very similar to those you and Hils (and Tarot) are having with "Doctor Who", Steve. I know very little about the franchise but my goodness am I keen to explore it :-)

  4. well, while hes gone ape crazy over Frostgrave miniatures, I`ve gone simian making Frostgrave terrain. We`ve always liked frozen settings, ice, snow, and frost, plus all the trimmings: and a lest frozen fantasy/sci-fi city full of monsters, deadly traps, and still undiscovered hidden treasures, what a buzz, right?

Your G.I. Joe figures interest is intriguing, and I`d love to know more. I completely `get` the attraction and would be the first to encourage it. As for the running Cybermen, this still causes me to wonder a bit, but hmmm, what do I know hehe.

    1. "lest - make that ``lost`` LOL." - glad you're enjoying "Frostgrave", Hils. It does sound very exciting, and I hope, like me, you've set aside some anachronistic scenery for your medieval winter party to encounter ;-)

I too am looking forward to knowing more about "G.I. Joe", so please stay tuned as I don't think PulpCitizen or Simon's enthusiasm for this project will let me off lightly :-)

  5. The Cybermen look great, but the running pose seems a little incongruous, but that is no reflection on your painting mate. :)

And welcome to the Joe-verse.... 3:)

    1. Cheers Leon. The Cyber War pose is definitely different to what I've envisaged a Cyberman behaving like in the past. And a HUGE thanks to you for letting me dip my noobie toes into the "Joe-verse"... Really excited for it!!! :-)

  6. Lovely job on the Cybermen...though I have mixed feelings about such a dynamic Cyberman. I think I prefer Cybermen to slower and more menacing!

  7. Still not sure about that running pose, nice painting though, good to see you getting into a toy franchise too (even if it is the wrong one ;-) ).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. Sadly, those "He-Man" miniatures I have found have been way too expensive... so I'll have to make do with "G.I. Joe" ;-)

  8. How times have changed! daleks that can now float up stairs and Cybermen who can sprint.... What is the world coming to!

Sorry I am old skool DR Who. I can't get used to all the up dated menaces... But each to their own.

    1. The pose is actually taken from the 'motion picture' like poster created to advertise the "Nightmare In Silver" episode, Clint. But the Cybermen certainly are far faster than they've been before in the TV series.

  9. I am busy painting my own "Nightmare in Silver" figures right now and I don't mind the jogging pose of this figure. I see him as jogging not running.

    1. I don't have a problem with the pose either Bryan, as it matches the pose of the Cyberman in the episode's 'movie theatre' poster very well, and he seems simply to be lurching forwards.

Looking forward to seeing your "Nightmare In Silver" miniatures, as they're very nice sculpts imho.

  11. Excellent stuff, Simon. The ru ning pose does still look a little odd and I think that 'model' of Cyberman can only access a quick burst of 'super-speed', IIRC, before going back to the normal stomping about.

And you don't know about G.I. Joe? But I thought you knew EVERYTHING?! Lol. You are very fortunate to have got some of these figures and i'll be interested to see how yours compare to Leon's.

    1. Cheers Jez. I know the BBC send "Warlord Games" photo reference material for their sculpts and also have to then agree them; so somewhere the pose exists, and I think its from the "Nightmare In Silver" poster.

Sadly knowing so much about a few things like "Doctor Who" means I know very little about a great many others :-) "G.I. Joe" being a great case in point. I'll certainly be following Leon and Simon's posts as its from them that I know who I'm painting, so you should have plenty of opportunity for comparisons.

  12. Great work on the running Cyberman. Really like the pose and the finish. I only found out recently that our very own 'Action Man' was a spin off from GI Joe! I'm intrigued by the figure on the far right holding a MAC10(?) and katana(?)...looks good.

    1. Thanks Mark. I think the Cyber War Cyberman is definitely an eye-catching piece. I am certainly finding the whole world of "G.I. Joe" a truly fascinating place, and hopefully I'll be able to give you a bit more info on Snake Eyes when I post up the finished piece.

  14. O you lucky sod! I've been goggling those Joe figs on everyone else's blogs too and could not find an online seller to grab some from. Makes sense now. No fair. :P

Cybermen look the part. How many do you have in total.

    1. Sorry Dai, yet I'm sure that means you can appreciate how delighted I am to own some "G.I. Joe" minis :-) I have a good forty of so Cybermen now by "Warlord Games" and probably another 40 by "Black Tree Design"; as well as a re-painted/re-based "Eaglemoss" Cyber-King with which to lead them :-)

    3. What can I say, predominantly a silver dry-brush over a "Citadel" Nuln Oil wash and they're finished - so they're a very tempting prospect to paint!!
