“Strong As The Hulk. Twice As Mean.”

This hefty 28mm model of The Abomination is miniature number 33 from the “Heroclix” Marvel Avengers range. It is based upon the alter ego of Chinese scientist Chang Lam from “The Ultimates” comic book series and stands an impressive 56cm in height. As I’m a huge fan of the ‘original’ Abomination by “Marvel Comics”, I don’t actually like this alternate universe (Earth-1610) version of the super-villain; who was actually decapitated and eaten by the Hulk. But the pre-painted plastic figure is definitely one of the more impressive and dynamic sculpts from “Wizkids”.
ROCKET RACCOON AND GROOT TRAVEL TO EARTH-1610 AND FACE THE ABOMINATION
The model was reasonably straightforward to paint despite its size and was simply given a double undercoat of “Vallejo” Heavy green” before being heavily washed with “Citadel” Agrax Earthshade. I was actually close to simply stopping there but eventually gave the model a rough drybrush of more “Vallejo” Heavy Green. This really helped bring out the detail of all the muscles and sinews sculpted onto the figure. The toes and teeth were picked out with “Vallejo” White and then also washed with “Citadel” Agrax Earthshade. Originally the model also had its large thumb nails painted white but I thought these looked dreadful as they starkly stood out from the rest of the dark-skinned monster. As a result I decided not to pick out these areas on my model and simply left them green along with the other fingers.

If you’re interested in the original Abomination, Emily Blonsky, then I look at the character’s latest appearance in “Savage Hulk” on my daily American Comics Review Blog here: http://thebrownbagaeccb.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/savage-hulk-2-marvel-comics.html
As you can see from this week’s Top Ten Miniatures in my painting queue I’ve made a few additions, most notably more “Heroclix” in the shape of The Hulk and The Flash. I have also got a very nice Tweedy Mattison model from “Crooked Dice Game Design Studio” and the previously posted Masked Bandit from “Boot Hill Miniatures”. I am currently just painting the spirit form of Judge Death and then I’ll start work on this ‘living’ version of the Deadworld Judge by “Mongoose Publishing”. I’ve not been able to make any progress on either my “Crooked Dice” Blake’s Seven project or The Shadow by “Graven Images”.

    1. Thanks Michael. If you go digging there really are some very nice Heroclix figures out there - especially the earlier ones. Lots on the table and so little time :-)

  2. Fitting green meanie for sure. Wasn't he more grey in the Ultimates comic though?

I'm really interested to see what this Blakes Seven project is all about - loved that program when I was a lad.

    1. Hi Dai. The movie Abomination is a lot less green, and the "Ultimates" Hulk is certainly grey, but I'm not aware of Chang Lam being that colour - but despite my love of US comics I've steered clear of the "Ultimates" so I'm no expert. I based the colour scheme primarily on the colour of the pre-paint, which was a very dark green with a brown wash. Having said that there seem to be a load of different pre-paint colour schemes for him as well :-)

I've been slowly painting up the Liberator Crew over the past few weeks for some 'Blake's 7TV' in the near future. Part One of the series can be found here:

Hopefully I'll have finished Roj Blake this weekend, so there should be some piccies of him soon.

  3. Nice paint job. You do like your big guys, don't you? This is a very different version of the Heroclix Abomination that I own. Yes, I know there are multiple versions of many of the heroes and villains. I'm out of touch with the newer stuff.

    1. Cheers Vampifan. I do seem to be painting some rather large models at the moment. As I say I'm not a fan of Marvel's new "Ultimates" versions as I like the old Stan Lee and Jack Kirby era stuff but this is a cracking model. I hope to paint up a more familiar looking Abomination soon, although its significantly smaller than this one.

  4. He's big and green; what a monster! Perhaps a touch too glossy for my taste?

    1. Many thanks Colgar6. I am occasionally tempted to matt varnish my figures but I've always liked the gloss finish - goes back to my days of collecting 'proper' toy soldiers with rosy red cheeks :-) Besides I've so many now that'd it'd take an eternity to re-varnish them all and I've experienced something similar when I rebased a load of minis a few years ago. Never again. Still at least I don;t PVA them any more :-)

    Nicely done dude!
Paint table looks busy, where do you get all your Heroclix from?

    1. Hi Bob. I have a couple of boxes of "Heroclix" as a result of a few orders from Troll and Toad in the US. The P&P across the Pond is a bit serious but the figures are so much cheaper so if I make a big enough order then it more than evens itself out. Unless of course I get hit by UK Customs - which has happened a couple of times :-( Blue Rat games in the UK is good as well though if you are willing to go through his inventory. Its clearly a labour of love with me :-)
