"You Can Just Call Me Ben."

"That's your idea of stability? Bring in captain zombie?"
This 28mm plastic model of Captain Ben Daimio from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is made by “Wizkids. It is model 006 from the Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. “Heroclix” Action Pack. A former United States Marine who 'died' in the Bolivian Jungle, this were-jaguar was created by Mike Mignola, John Arcudi and Guy Davis in 2004 and features in the “B.P.R.D.” comic book by “Dark Horse Comics”.

In order to ‘cover-up’ the miniature’s pre-paint the entire figure was undercoated with “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna. I then painted Daimio's trousers and top with "Citadel" Abaddon Black. The original colour scheme also had the ex-soldier wearing black boots. But in order to break up so monotonous an appearance I decided to give his footwear a layer of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna. To make his firearm's holster and belt also somewhat 'stand out' I painted them with some Heavy Brown. All these areas were then washed with “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. Ben’s pistol was simply picked out with "Citadel" Ironbreaker and then given a two applications of Nuln Oil to help really darken the weapon.
Invasion Cybermen WIPs - Just need to be dry-brushed and have some minute details picked out
Having previously sorted through my “Doctor Who” lead mountain I have finally managed to wash all seven of my "Black Tree Design" Cybermen with black shade in preparation for dry-brushing them.
Doctor Who WIPs - Twenty year-old minis which may yet be salvageable
I have also found a few more of the Cornwall-based manufacturer’s miniatures which I probably started to paint some twenty years ago and have dusted them down ready for re-painting. I certainly plan to use the Dalek as a test-piece to see whether by just giving the model a quick black wash I can achieve a similar effect to the time-consumingly tricky 'black-lining' technique I used to employ on my Kaled Mark III travelling machines. I'm pretty confident I can simply tidy up and continue to paint the Ancient Haemovore and the Fourth Doctor; although the Timelord's face will undoubtedly need re-working and highlighting.

  1. At first glance I thought all seven figures were finished. But a closer look and a read of your text revealed I was incorrect. Good work on Ben Daimio. You're building up a nice collection of figures from the Hellboy comics.
I must admit that I do not like the sculpts of those Cybermen but there is nothing wrong with your brushwork. The figure I'm most impressed with is your Tom Baker version of Doctor Who. He does look finished to me. Good work all around, Simon.

    1. Cheers Bryan. Just a few more BPRD to go now. The Cybermen are a little underwhelming and sadly are rather cuddly-looking as well as small... hardly the monsters from Mondas. Still they should be relatively straightforward to complete now the wash has dried on them. Tom needs quite a bit of tinkering tbh but you certainly get a rough impression of what he should look like once completed.

  3. I really need to read more Hellboy, sounds great, certainly loved the movies. Also lovely to see the one true Doctor on your desk too.

    1. Cheers Michael. The BPRD are certainly a strange bunch of characters, and I'm certainly looking forward to fielding the full team in a BatRep or two. Just a few more to go. I have several Dr Who's on my desk at present, so which one did you mean ;-)

  4. Great job Ben, I mean Bk.
See what I did there. Seriously, great job on Ben dude. At least these cybermen are better sculpts than the "cock-rocket" ones. The Doctor looks good now dude, minimal touch up, I assume? You seriously need to be considered for "King of 'clix" status too man.

    1. Thanks Bob. Much appreciated. I rather like the Mondas Cybermen and these Invasion versions are actually a little smaller even than them. But I guess they look more like the Cybermen people know. Tom is actually up for a serious repaint, although the majority of his various undercoats are complete - which'll save an awful lot of work and time. Thanks very much for the "clix" line :-)

  5. The later BTD Cybermen from Earthshock are much better.

    1. Cheers Jason. I have a few of the Earthshock minis and will be painting them up at some point soon - I hope. I haven't had a good look at them yet though so thanks for giving me the heads up I've something better to look forward to painting. Very encouraging.

  6. What cracking looking figures. Captain Daimo would make a good Dino Ranger for SDZA!

    1. Thanks Simon. He's certainly one of my fave minis from the BPRD range. I need to crack on with my SDZA stuff as Drew seems to have more stuff coming out all the time :-)

  7. Really nice stuff Simon, I see what you mean about the cybermen though, But it's nice to see you painting the one true doctor, as I always say....

"Tom Baker is Dr Who, all the others are just actors playing the part!!!"

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. There's no doubting your stance on who the best Doctor Who was ;-) Hopefully a couple of different dry-brushes and some brightly coloured chest lights etc will help make the Cybermen appear more menacing. But they aren't great sculpts. My painting table is absolutely flooded at present with models. Not helped by the fact I've done little but play "Zombicide" all week!!!

  8. Yeah, I don't remember Tom Baker's smile being so large and bright. Still though, it's a fun mini.

Love the Cybermen, though those are some silly sculpts.

Do you have a John Pertwee mini as well?

    1. The "Black Tree Design" stuff is a bit hit and miss, Dai. I have a couple of Jon Pertwee sculpts though it'll probably be the "Crooked Dice" one which I'll paint first...
