"You're Fidgeting Around Like A Daggit On A Sunspot."

"When these fires reach hyper-combustion, the whole planet's gonna blow!"
This 28mm metal miniature of the D-Ranger codenamed Helios is made by “Nexus Miniatures” and is model NX13 from their “Superhero Dinosaur Zombie Apocalypse” range. The figure comes in two pieces and makes a wonderful proxy for Captain Apollo, as played by Richard Hatch in the 1978 Science fiction television series “Battlestar Galactica”.

The Colonial Warrior was initially undercoated with “Vallejo” Heavy Brown before his jacket was painted using Heavy Sienna. The model’s shoulder-pads and boots were then given a coat of Charred Brown. Finally his jacket’s buttons and shirt collar were picked out with Gold. All of these areas were then washed with “The Army Painter” Strong Tone Quickshade. In addition I also painted one of the captain’s belt straps with a combination of “Vallejo” Gold and Strong Tone Quickshade as my TV show reference material depicted the character stowing a handful of large ammunition rounds by his holster. As the metallic colour would break up the somewhat monotonously black mid-drift of the miniature I thought just painting one such area in this way should make the ‘bullets’ stand out.
D-Rangers WIPs - Both Joey and Galicia are close to completion
Sticking with my collection of “Nexus Miniatures” I have managed to make some considerable headway on these two other D-Ranger models, Codenamed Galicia and Joey. These sculpts are absolutely full of character and I’ll probably pick up another set along with a couple of D-Ranger Helmet sprues to provide me with additional ‘nameless’ Colonial Warriors.
American Agents WIPs - Early days yet but the truth is out there...
In addition I have also started work on these two American Agents. Having only undercoated Sculder and Mulley and ‘boxed off’ their separate areas with black I still have a lot to work to do in order to get them finished. However these sculpts are significantly slighter in size than the D-Rangers, so shouldn’t be that time-consuming to complete. I have also managed to drill and pin the manufacturer’s Visor head to this cracking sculpt of a Psychic Hero F.O.N. Operative and given my ‘Cyclops’ a blue undercoat.

  1. Apollo looks fantastic Bk. Your other "D-rangers" are coming along nicely too. Loved that series as a kid.
Really keen to see how not Mulder and Scully turn out, I'd like some of those two myself.

    1. Cheers Bob. I've plenty of opposition for my D-Rangers too, as I also thoroughly loved the TV series as a child ;-) The American Agents shouldn't be too much further down the queue to completion.

  2. That does look like Hatch and the hair is just the same. Such a 70's look, I love it!

    1. Thanks Anne. The sculpting really is a cracking likeness, and as you say they've got Hatch's hair spot on.

    1. Cheers Gordon. They're great sculpts and I think the brown and gold colour scheme of the Colonial Warriors works tremendously well.

  4. I love this Simon, I am tempted by these miniature just because Battlestar Galactia was such a great show whilst growing - nostalgia is proving to be expensive!

    1. Thanks Michael. "Nexus" do a really interesting range which covers an awful lot of classic sci-fi ground. Now I've got the bug for painting them I certainly plan to do a whole lot more over the coming months.

  7. Great to see the finished "Apollo", they are really nice sculpts, and that's a spot on paint job. I'm staying away from looking at the nexus web-site at the moment as I really can not afford to be tempted, there are a couple of other purchases I hope to get in the next month or so (both your fault I hasten to add!).

All I can say is "Get thee behind me Satan!!" I will be strong, I will be strong, I will be........ Oh bum, what's that web-site again?

    Cheers Roger.

    1. You're very kind Roger... and I'm delighted to say this will be the first of many more "Nexus" posts I have no doubt. In addition I do believe they're currently having a 15% off sale at the moment so just click their name in my posting and it should send you straight to their site. Oh darn... I've clicked it myself ;-)

  8. Since your original post on this, I have visited Nexus' site and managed to refrain from purchasing anything...so far. You and Bryan's posts are a delight to read, but you keep showing me things that I didn't realise I needed until I saw them. Curse you both!
On an unrelated note, just downloaded the free 7TV 2nd edition rules and my brief perusal suggests this might be ideal for running a Masters of the Universe game. As I know you've had plenty of experience with 1st edition, would you agree? Your thoughts would be appreciated.
    Regards Jez

    1. Jez, Many thanks for your very gracious comment. Much appreciated. Sadly I too have visited the "Nexus" site since posting and I wasn't as strong-willed as you :-)

I've not looked at "7TV" 2nd Edition yet, as I still have an enormous amount of the original expansions to plough through first, and as I like that rule-set so much I don't feel the need yet to move on to the next addition. I do though wholly agree that "7TV" is perfect for Masters of The Universe - though their swashbuckling sword and sorcery "7th Voyage" may be more fitting. I haven't played that myself (though I own it), but Colgar6 has produced some excellent BatReps on his site using them: http://colgar6.blogspot.co.uk/

    2. Cheers Simon. I did wonder about 7th Voyage as an alternative, so I'll be sure to check his site out. :)

    3. No worries Jez. Hopefully you;ll enjoy his Ancient Greek battles as much as I do.

  9. Hi, Simon. I've been without my computer for the past three days so apologies for the delay in replying to you. Wonderful selection of figures and you've got me very tempted to take a look at this range of figures.

    1. Thanks Bryan. I've succumbed myself and Drew from "Nexus" has just sent me a few more additions to add to my lead mountain. Please do have a look, I'd be amazed if there wasn't something there you didn't fancy ;-)
