(Lead) Mountain Musings - "Zombie Gunfighters" Zomtober 2017

Zombie Gunfighters WIPS - The undead have been primed and washed to help see their detail
This month's randomly themed attempt to try and reduce my overwhelming collection of metal, plastic and resin miniatures has been rather waylaid by PulpCitizen's recent announcement, over on his brilliant blog "Eclectic Gentleman Tabletop Gamer", that the next few weeks will once again host the annual "Zomtober" Challenge where fellow wargamers "just paint one Zombie or Survivor (or more!) each week, in any scale you like" and post it to your blog by “that week’s Sunday.”

There's currently a whole host of bloggers already 'setting out their stall' for the annual event, and this year there seems to be more than ever taking part:

"Saturday Mornings" - Ivor Evans
"28mm Victorian Warfare" - Michael Awdry
"Miniature Mayhem" - Terry Silverthorn
"The Wargame Addict" - Wargame Addict
"Lead Reckoning" - Fred Jackson
"Never Mind The Jankers" - Roy Williamson

As a result, I have deferred from choosing a haphazard painting subject for October and instead managed to base, flock, prime and shade a small horde of Zombie Gunfighters recently purchased from "Wargames Foundry"; a characterful collection of undead cowboys which actually numbers seven figures in total, as opposed to the six depicted on the Nottingham-based company’s Old West range website.
Zombie Gunfighters WIPS - The undead have been primed and washed to help see their detail
These 28mm metal models consist of a handful of pistol-welding gunslingers, a union soldier and a shotgun-carrying ruffian, and were originally bought in order to replace the rather disappointing soft-sculpted Hungry Dead plastic miniatures which come in the “Shadows Of Brimstone” by "Flying Frog Productions". Indeed, as the "fast-paced, fully cooperative, dungeon-crawl board game" can require a good dozen or more animated corpses on the tabletop simultaneously, I've already got plans to fork out and procure some additional painless nightmares from "Wargames Foundry".
Crusaders Of The Order WIPs - The armoured cowboys are having their detail slowly 'picked out'
For now however, I am humbly focusing upon my initial ensemble of Old West cadavers, though I have admittedly, also added a couple of cowboys by "North Star Military Figures" to the mix in an effort to re-galvanise my desire to visit "Dracula's America" sometime soon. I have previously primed these two Crusaders of the Order so as to represent the Lawman and Rancher from the aforementioned "Shadows Of Brimstone" board game, and resultantly hope to use "Zomtober" to get the pair of Weird Wild West survivors finished alongside my horde of hungry cadavers.

  1. They already look great, I'd just add some touches of faded colour and make them look ghostly, like they wandered in from the desert

    1. Thanks Martin, great suggestion!! I am actually tempted just to add some green wash to them them, dry-brush them with more white and have them as ghostly gunslingers :-) For now though I'm just focusing on the Crusaders and hoping to get them finished for next Sunday's Zomtober posting.

  2. Now here's a post to warm my cockles and bring an appreciative smile to my face. I do like the figures you've chosen to paint, especially as I'm also busily painting figures for both "Dracula's America" and "Shadows of Brimstone". My horde of Weird Wild West zombies is growing quite rapidly. It's surprising just how many zombie figures for this genre there are currently available. I wish you well on this venture, Simon.

    1. Cheers Bryan, I would imagine, knowing of your great interest in the shambling horde, that this would be one of your favourite times of the year in the wargaming calendar. It certainly is mine. Painting miniatures to scratch more than a single itch (in this case "Dracula's America" and "Shadows Over Brimstone") is always good in my books, and I really want to crack on with both. Hopefully nine minis over four weeks shouldn't prove too difficult to attain.

    1. Thanks Andy. I wanted some minis with plenty of character to keep me entertained and hopefully make a series of interesting posts, and you can't really go wrong with "Wargames Foundry" imho.

  4. Some interesting Zombies Simon, that's not a bad zombie skin tone already, you can also use blue and purple glazes as well as the green, to add bruising and blood pooling in the skin before re highlighting

    1. Cheers Dave. I thought you were going to say 'you can also use Wargames Terrain Workshop's spectacular range of Old West resin scenery to really help such undead subject matter come alive on the tabletop' ;-)

    2. No mate you pretty much own all the current range, and didn't want to mention your WTW resin pile ! LOL

    3. I better start painting some of those Catcus piles up then!! I'm hoping to make these a colourful bunch of zeds, so I'll need some straightforward terrain to paint to help keep my sanity.

    4. Sound's like a good idea, and will also clear some of your resin pile, if you need any help on colours and ideas drop me an email mate

    5. Will do, Dave, though any email to you, inevitably runs the risk of containing another order ;-)

  7. Excellent stuff Simon - I hope you've got "Ghostriders In The Sky" playing in the background while you paint ;-)
I'd hoped to make a start into the Weird West by Halloween this year, sadly that DEADline is going to be missed, but when I do make a start I'll be referencing your posts for inspiration!

  11. Seeing so many wild west goodies reminds me, I have big things planned over the coming weeks.. for Shadows of Brimstone, cowboys AND zombies of course, its just a matter of trying to fit it all in (lack of time...the bane of all hobbyists haha). What is it David Bowie said:

Time - He's waiting in the wings
    He speaks of senseless things
His script is you and me - boys

    1. Well those big plans sound awesome, Steve. I don't think "Shadows Of Brimstone" gets enough blogging attention currently.

  12. I'm not one for the Wild West zombie genre, it seems like a ;bandwagon; move, but still looking forward to seeing what you do wth these interesting looking minis.

    1. Cheers Joe. I think both "Shadows Of Brimstone" and "Dracula's America" have really made Weird West suddenly quite popular. Plus there's a couple of other similar sort of games emerging too. Hopefully my posts will entertain you though, nonetheless :-)
