"Work Gangs Carry Weaponry Adapted From Mining Machinery..."

"...A kind of compression device called a mass compactor."
This 28mm metal Boromite Ganger is manufactured by "Warlord Games" and comes as part of the Boromite Work Gang boxed set for "Beyond The Gates Of Antares". "Supplied unassembled and unpainted" this extra-terrestrial miner is the first of five miniatures I require in order for me to field a 123-point Reflex Armour-wearing Work Gang armed with Mass Compactors and Implosion Grenades.

Initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey, the figure was washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil, and then had a layer of Chaos Black applied over all its weaponry, ammunition packs and hip-flask. The alien's metallic areas, including its firearm's nozzle, were subsequently treated to a combination of Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil, whilst its Mass Compactor had its hand-grips and main body slightly corroded with a light touch of "Mig Productions" Extreme Rust Wash. Finally I 'picked out' the weapon's power lighting (and visor lenses) with "Vallejo" Heavy Khaki and "Citadel" Biel-Tan Green.
Hybrid WIPs - Jimmy Marks has been primed, washed and dry-brushed
The Boromite's pouch was painted using a mix of "Vallejo" Heavy Ochre, Heavy Red and "Citadel" Abaddon Black. This reddish brown was then washed with "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. Lastly, the model's yellow(ish) armour, his "separate multi-functional nanite receptor nodes" and mining tool's distortion compensator were carefully coloured by heavily washing a layer of "Vallejo" Heavy Ochre with some "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade.

With my latest "Beyond The Gates Of Antares" figure finished, I have turned my attention back to another of my plastic "Heroclix" models by "Wizkids". Having so recently finished four Dire Wraiths, I thought I'd spend a little time progressing the half-human, half-dire wraith Hybrid, known as James "Jimmy" Marks. Significantly pinker in colour than his father, this super-villain has already been primed, washed and dry-brushed, and is now ready for some detailing...

Lastly, I somewhat fallen foul of a desire to play some sort of mass-battle game, and resultantly have turned to "Kings Of War" by "Mantic Games" to 'scratch' this particular 'itch.' Unsurprisingly one of the first things I have done is purchase the second edition of the "mass-battle fantasy wargame" rule-book and been rather encouraged to see just how few miniatures it takes to actually field a tabletop worthy army.

To begin with I am therefore going to paint-up an Undead force, requiring just a regiment of Wights in order to 'unlock' two troops and either a war engine, monster or hero. The beauty of selecting the "once mighty warrior kings" is that they are large infantry, so I only require just three models in order to create a fully-fledged regiment; as opposed to twenty skeletons, ghouls or zombies...

  1. Cracking stuff! I must say I'm blown away by your colors and tones in the Wight! Absolutely love that greenish color :)

    1. Many thanks indeed Ivor. The wight king has put me in a bit of a predicament now as I was going to paint him (and the other two) with lots of armour etc but now I'm tempted to leave a lot more of him ethereal green... decisions decisions...

  2. Very nice job dude. I can imagine you using a gang of these in Necromunda :D

    1. Cheers Simon. The Boromites would indeed look good in "Necromunda" now you mention it, or "Shadow War: Armageddon" ;-)

  3. The wight looks fantastic! Jimmy is a brilliant miniature and I love that colour, great post Simon

    1. Thanks very much Andy. The "Heroclix" range really does do some great "Marvel Comics" minis, and I'm equally as impressed with many of "Mantic Games" sculpts too :-)

  4. Ooooh, I like that Hybrid figure - would make a good Grey for an X-Files game and that wight is rarher nice too. Nice work Simon.

    1. Cheers Jez. The Hybrid is a rather tall figure, that's a 40mm circular base he's stood upon, so he could definitely be used as a grey muscle or some such :-) The wights are similarly sized too.

  5. Lots of nice eye candy in this post, Simon. Jimmy is the stand out figure for me. He looks quite repulsive in a cool way.

I was rather surprised to see you decide on "Kings of War" to play some mass battles and not whatever the latest "Warhammer" version is. Good man! And my respect for you went up even further when you opted for an undead army. Suffice to say, that would have been my number one choice. All in all, a most enjoyable post!

    1. Thanks Bryan. I like to mix things up when I can, and am hoping to get a finished Jimmy posted on Wednesday. I've had my eye on "Kings Of War" ever since I saw the dwarves riding badgers as cavalry at "Salute" a few years ago - a personal fave. And their Undead miniatures are widely regarded as some of the very best out there - which I'm hoping to showcase over the next few months :-)

  6. Great post and lving the boromite and all the detail on him.
You've also done a grat job on both the hybrid (hard to believ he's not finished) and the suitably revolting wight!

    1. Cheers Joe, much appreciated :-) The Hybrid is now finished and should be posted up on Wednesday. Glad you like the Wight, there's a lot of Undead coming to "Fantorical" in a little while ;-)

  7. That Wight looks fab! Very nice shading on those greens.

The Hybrid is an interesting piece as well. You keep coming up with some random comic characters that I've never heard of before. ^_^

    1. Thanks Dai. The Wight is now scaring me a little as I don't want to ruin it, but feel the minis deserve something more than just a green hue-look; as will my wraiths.

I'm always happy to brief people on new and unusual super-heroes and villains - need to put on a big BatRep using loads to show them all off!!

  8. Stunning work on the Wight Simon, and far from shabby on Jimmy and the Ganger either ;-)
KoW sounds cool, but I'd I'd still recommend giving Dragon Rampant a try - you can use ANY mini's you want, and the 'activation rules' lend themselves to solo play very well.

    1. Cheers Greg. I do still have "Dragon Rampant" in mind, but for now have lost myself in the lore of Mantica and "KoW". I am mulling over doing a series of BatReps using the same armies across different rule-sets... I think that would be interesting, don't you?

    2. I think that would be an excellent idea :-)

    1. Thanks Dave. What do you think about the Wight? Filling in the sword and some of the top rusty armour, and leaving the rest ethereal, leaving it totally green tinted, or painting the entire model's armour? Decisions decisions..?

    2. You could glaze some metal colours over areas so you keep the green tint but define areas as being different

    3. Hmmm... I'll give that a go on the blade, as I was going to pick that out properly anyway. Thanks Dave :-)

  10. Another great post. Glad to see another Boromite finished. Can't wait for the full "scout force" to be ready and to see it in its full glory. I think these are great sculpts and really like the Antares universe. The wight is another nice wip. The ghostly effect is coming on nicely and looks really good, so again another model I look forward to seeing finished enormously. I do like the look of Kings of War, but the regiments required to be painted do make me pause I have to say. Another great read, keep it up Sir.

    1. Cheers Undercoat. Its good to get a Boromite off the tally marker - just four to go, and one of those is almost finished now. "Kings Of WaR" could be huge for me this year, as I'm really enjoying the fluff and the mini count isn't too bad either. For example, my Undead force will initially only contain 24 models - which is very similar to an "Age Of Sigmar" force to be honest.

  11. The latest Boromite is another great addition to the gang; they are probably my favourite of the races I have seen for GoA. :)

    1. Thanks Leon. On paper I'm a huge fan of the Boromites too, but painting them is frankly something of a chore imho. Still, four to go before I've completed my core, and I'm pretty sure after that I'll be fine with them, as I can paint them up in dribs and drabs.
