"A Combination Of Strategy, Tactics, And Absolute Mindless Violence..."

"...Blood Bowl is the classic game of fantasy football."
"Hello sports fans, and welcome to the inaugural edition of Monday Night Football. I'm Jim Maddenberg and despite the start of the season still being a couple of months away, coaches are already pulling their teams together in the hope of playing a few preseason games."

"One such club is the Doom Lords, a Chaos Chosen "Blood Bowl" team produced by "Games Workshop" and owned by a mysterious being commonly referred as ‘The Overfiend’. My fellow co-commentator, Thom Grassyglade has more. Thom..?"
Chosen Blocker & Beastman Runner WIPs - The models have been assembled and primed
"Well one thing's for sure, Jim, this Dark Gods-worshipping side will at least have a ball to play with during the club's opening match. One of six plastic Chaos team balls found within The Doom Lords boxed set, the skull ball was super-glued upon a 25mm circular base and primed using "Vallejo" Black."

"It was then treated to a combination of "Citadel" Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil, before any visible leather was 'picked out' with "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna. These areas were subsequently washed with some "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade."
Beastman Runner WIPs - The players come with an assortment of horned heads
"Great update, Thom, and I see one of Blood Bowl’s most dangerous teams have also released some early pictures of some of the players they'll be hoping to trial in the weeks to come. Boy, those Chosen Blockers look a formidable sight. I bet they came in quite a few pieces prior to assembly?"

"Indeed they did, Jim. Both Blockers are seven-eight piece multi-part kits, and can be built with alternative heads too. To be honest though, the first of the Doom Lords' eight Beastman Runners are just as complicated to construct, as the ferocious Cloven Ones come with a choice of six different pairs of horns."

"Thanks Thom, that wrap's up this show, but please join us again next time when we'll be taking a closer look at some of this team's players..."

  1. Good to see you dipping your toes into the Blood Bowl pool. I enjoyed playing it a lot in the 1990's but neither myself nor any of my fellow gamers ever chose a Chaos team. I can see why you chose them but right now I'd pick any other team over Chaos, not that I can ever see me playing Blood Bowl again. That said, I'll watch how you get on with them.

    1. Well I picked the Doom Lords as I thought the Beastmen runners looked cool, Bryan. I’ve no idea as to how they play, but hope to find out once they’re painted up. This new version of “Blood Bowl” badly captured my imagination when I saw the entire line-up all decked out on a shelf at “Warhammer World”, so I certainly plan on keeping this series of project postings going for a while yet - and hopefully get a game or three in too :-)

    2. Bryan you can always play on line with Bloodbowl 2 and FUMBBL if short of players. I occasionally do and always get torn to shreds. There is a difference between casual players and the online crowd. Still an option though.

    3. Thanks for that advice, Phil, but I'm such a lousy computer gamer I gave up trying many, many years ago.

    1. Thanks Simon, so do I - as that’ll be another project finished :-)

  3. What a great post! Brilliant! Loved the commentary theme, well done Sir. Those models look stunning, can't wait to see what you do with them. I love the ball too, great little sculpt. Can't wait for next Monday.

    1. Cheers Undercoat. It’s going to be a bit of a challenge, but I’m hoping to get one player finished per week, ready for a game late September.

  4. Interesting you went for Chaos Simon, in previous editions found they were out performed by most other races, but hopefully they've fixed that now. What team colours are you going for ?

    1. Thanks Dave. I’ve not really ever played “Blood Bowl” before and went with the Doom Lords as I simply liked the minis. They’ll be red and black, as per their box art - and because they should be reasonably simple to paint :-)

  5. That's going to be a powerful looking team Simon. Looking forward to seeing how they progress.

  6. I'm glad to see that you are playing the sacred game and I will follow your painting with interest, well more interest than normal. My 2nd edition plastic human team died last year when a loft giant landed on them .... don't ask.But `The Witterings Nut Kickers' Orc team -2nd edition has replaced them.

    1. Thanks Phil, I didn’t know that “Blood Bowl” was your particular poison, so that’s good to know, especially as I’m hoping to inject this blog with a real fantastic football vibe for at least the next few months as I try and paint up my Doom Lords; amongst many other painting projects.

  7. Bloodbowl that takes me back, I think I've got about six or seven painted teams in the loft, though I used to like playing with my "Borderdale Bunnies" team which was actually made up from figures by "Shadowforge" in Australia.

Best of luck with these though.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I too like the “Shadowforge” minis, but will be sticking with the official ones for now. There’s some great minis out there too :-)

  8. I've never played Blood bowl but look forward to you posting a demonstration game. Is that likely?
I've seen some of the Shadowforge teams and thought they were top notch. Some of your guys are cracking figures so should be an enjoyable paint job for you.

    1. Thanks Vagabond. The cunning plan is to paint up a team and have a friendly game at the end of September (against Elves I believe). I won't be posting up one of my usual BatReps for that, but a simple AAR.

However, I do hope to then paint up at least a six of the Humans and half a dozen Orcs so I can play some quick-fire games, and those I will do my usual BatReps on. If "Blood Bowl" takes off though - who knows - there are certainly a lot of lovely minis out there and plenty of Star Players too :-)

  10. I love Bloodbowl, but without an oppponent it's not that good a board game, though I do have two computer versions (not the latest) which are good fun.
I'm sure you'll have fun painting these.

    1. Thanks Joe. I haven’t played a game of “Blood Bowl” for a couple of years at least, and then just the once. I did enjoy an early version of the video game though, and have always been in awe of its universe. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy these “Monday Night Football” postings as I work my way through my team.

  11. I liked the way you cunningly presented your painting guide as commentary. Was never a fan of the game, but do understand its appeal.

    1. Cheers Jez. Being a "Blood Bowl" post seems to have gone down rather well, so they'll be a fair few more such commentaries before the season begins ;-)

  12. Chaos teams are so fun. Planning to add a Minotaur, Ogre or Troll to the ranks?
(Loved the writeup! Right out of the original rulebooks.)

    1. Thanks very much Dai. I do happen to own a certain Star Player Ogre, but I'll probably go with a Minotaur for this particular team once I've finished painting it - to keep in with the goatman look.
