"No Silicon Heaven? Preposterous! Where Would All The Calculators Go?"

"I haven't been this embarrassed since I was loosening my adjustment screws..."
"Cast in White Metal", this 28mm miniature of Kry-10 was made by "Y.F.T. Design" and forms part of the company's limited release 'Scarlet Midget' - Cosplay Away Team. Clearly a "lookalike" for Robert Llewellyn's character in the "British science fiction situation comedy Red Dwarf", the Series III mechanoid was initially primed using some "Vallejo" Black and subsequently dry-brushed with Gunmetal Grey.

The robot butler 's groin socket, hand-held cleaning device and central circular chest panel were then 'picked out' using "Citadel" Ironbreaker, before the figure was entirely washed with Nuln Oil. The automaton's hands and cube-shaped head were later pigmented using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone and "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade.
Wildfyre & Dibber WIPs - The two alter-ego "Red Sector" characters have simply been based and primed
As a last touch Kryten's head was additionally given a careful, light dry-brush of (more) "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone in order to try and bring out some of its angular details. I did momentarily consider basing the miniature on a science-fiction themed stand, but in the end went with my age-old mix of "Citadel" Doombull Brown, Rakarth Flesh and "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade so it would fit in with the vast majority of my other finished figures.

With the first of my four Grant-Naylor influenced "clean-up crew" completed, I have actually set about assembling a couple more figures from the "Nexus Miniatures" range to add to my painting queue. Sculpted by Carl Stoelzel these two "instantly recognisable cosplay sci-fi comedy" characters are Arnold 'Ace' Wildfyre and D. Wayne 'Rocky' Dibber.
Boromite Work Gang Leader WIPs - The alien miner still needs his detailed Mass Compactor painted
However, its clear that the Space Adventurers make excellent-looking doppelgangers for Ace Rimmer and the dorky alter-ego of the Cat, Duane Dibbley. I'm especially pleased to get my hands on Arnold, as the sculpt's original planned pose proved somewhat problematic prior to casting on account of him holding a firing pistol in his right hand. I understand the hand-weapon proved too difficult to successfully cast, so was delayed in order for the model's stance to be altered and the gun removed.

Finally I am currently working on a Boromite Work Gang Leader for “Beyond The Gates Of Antares” by “Warlord Games”. I actually had to purchase this particular figure separately from the Nottingham-based manufacturer having lost the original one from my boxed set, and then recently discovered the AWOL alien miner during a big clear up. Despite this though, I had decided to stick to painting my replacement miniature in order to establish whether using a "Vallejo" Heavy Ochre undercoat will make the time-consuming piece quicker to paint...

  1. Great job on Kryten, intrigued to see if the change of base colour speeds up your Boromite

    1. Thanks Dave. Sadly its not looking good with the Boromite so far - but there again the leader is absolutely stacked with tiny details.

  2. Nice job on Kryten. Can you still use the 'missing' now found chap still?

    1. Cheers Simon. Oh yes, I've enough for the making of a second Boromite Work Gang now. So as soon as I want to expand my Scouting force I can add them :-)

    1. Thank you kindly, Michael. I’m looking forward to getting my “Red Dwarf” crew on the tabletop, so am highly enthused to at least get the main quartet finished this month.

  5. The Kryten paint job is great! I love the way you have done his face, although I am somewhat concerned about the attention given to his, ahem, groin socket! Overall: awesome. As to the wips, all I can say is, "smoke me a kipper and I'll be back for breakfast! (Or when the model is finished)" Very nice sculpts. Glad to see the Boromite as well. Great models so can't wait to see your starting force ready for action.

    1. Thanks Undercoat. I’m really pleased the way the “Vallejo” Gunmetal Grey has turned out following the “Citadel” Nuln Oil wash. Kryten has quite a distinctive black-silver armour and I was initially a bit thrown as to how to replicate the colour. I’m not sure when Ace will be finished, but it won’t be before I’ve finished my Boromite Work Ganger leader :-)

  6. Superb Simon!
I'm envious of quite a lot of your posts, but with these "NOT Red Dwarf characters" you can base coat me with Goblin Green, give me a wash with Orc Skin Tone and pick out the highlights with Snot Green!! ;-)

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of 'em, and more importantly, seeing what kind of adventures they get up to on the tabletop :-)

    1. LOL Greg!! I was rather lucky to pick up these OOP minis, but did have to wait a good 18 months for them to turn up as memory serves :-) I’m really keen to get the initial quartet painted for exactly that reason - getting them on the tabletop in some sort of campaign. I’ve a few mash-ups in mind already ;-)

  8. Kryten - great figure and instantly recognisable (as the second version) and well done picking out all the little details on him, looking forward to the rest of the crew if you ever get the paint to stick!
Always pleasing for me (now that I'm a convert) to see another Boromite on the atble and the wip photos of these guys really do show how much work you put into them.

    1. Cheers Joe. Much appreciated :-) I’m hoping the paint will stick better on some of the other minis, though like my Lister mini, Kryten also suddenly lost a leaf of paint through simple handling? very odd. I’m hoping to get the Boromite finished over the next few days, and then I’ll have just one more left before the 500pt scouting force is finished :-)

    2. Other than the normal prep on figures, have you tried varnishing the figure first ?

Good to know you're nearly at the end of your Boromite endeavours - just promise you'll do a group shot (wide angle lens?)

    3. Thanks Joe. I do varnish my minis from time to time when I've finished an area and don't want to scuff it up, but not straight over the undercoat. Hmmm... I'm hoping tbh this is a badly oily batch, but if the problem persists I may give that suggestion a try...

Group shot will be coming, as will more Boromite units, once the last two are finished. I have loads more to paint :-)

  9. Lovin` Kryten, not sure what the brown figures are supposed to be but like Eastenders we'll have another update along shortly.
