"Welcome To The World Of Blood Bowl..."

"...Where as the coach of your team, you'll be seeking to defeat your rivals..."
"Greetings sports fans, and welcome to another edition of Monday Night Football. Jim Maddenberg here with all the pre-season news as a second team has raised its head above the severed head laden parapet and looks set to challenge the Doom Lords for fame, fortune and the adulation of this great sport's fans. Thom?"

"That's right, Jim, we're still a long way before the first match of the season starts, yet the head coach of the Reikland Reavers, Helmut Zwimmer, has set his human followers' tongues a wagging by releasing a picture of his club's game ball. One of four similarly-shaped pieces taken from the bright blue-coloured plastic sprue found inside the "Blood Bowl" starter set, this spiked ball was super-glued upon a 25mm circular base and primed using "Vallejo" Black."
Human Blitzer WIP - The player has been assembled, based and primed "Vallejo" Heavy Blue
"Reports then suggest it was painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade." The ball's metallic areas were subsequently 'picked out' using some "Citadel" Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil, whilst its laces were layered with "Vallejo" Heavy Brown before being washed with (more) "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade."

"And I understand coach Zwimmer hasn't stopped there either, Thom, by announcing that owner J.J. Griswell Junior has already purchased the Reavers' first new player of the year, none other than a Blitzer. We've heard previously that the Doom Lords' Chosen Blockers and Beastmen consisted of seven-eight piece multi-part kits, is this the case with the human team?
Chosen Blocker WIPs - The Dark God Worshipper is slowly having his armour 'picked out'
"No, Jim. Arguably the most flexible player on a human team, the Blitzer has been designed to essentially be a simple three-piece 'push-fit' model, which can quickly take to the field once its slotta stand has been firmly attached to its 30mm circular base. The figure even comes in the iconic blue used by the Reavers, so it doesn't necessarily even need painting..."

"And finally, I understand that the Doom Lords have made considerable progress preparing the first of their Chosen Blockers to get on the pitch. Something of a pilot palette piece this formidable-looking Dark God worshipper will take to the field wearing "Vallejo" Black cloth undergarments with Heavy Red and Brass armour."

"Well that about wraps it up for this show, folks. A big thanks to fellow co-commentator Thom Grassyglade, and next time we'll hopefully see more from both the Doom Lords and Reikland Reavers."

  3. Another ball! I thought Blood Bowl had 1 ball and 11 players a side? Are you playing a new version with 11 balls and 1 player a side? Only kidding! Nice to see Monday Night Football back, and nice to see the Chaos team getting some progress. I love the commentary style, keep it up.

    1. Cheers undercoat. I always like to lead my regular postings with something painted, so a ball will have to do until I can get some of the actual players finished. The first "Monday Night Football" seemed rather popular, so I certainly intend to keep the commentary going as long as I can.

  4. Great work and commentary Simon, are you painting the reavers as the same as the GW ones ?

    1. Thanks Dave. I plan to post a few of the Starter Box minis as WIPs whilst I'm ploughing through my Doom Lords, so expect some more Reavers and Orks too. I certainly intend for Reikland to be my second team, once I've finished the Doom Lords :-)

    1. Indeed, Bryan :-) Simple stuff until I can start finishing some actual players.

  7. Many thanks for another trip down memory lane Simon!
Sadly, the gaming group I was in when Blood Bowl came out is now lost in the mists of time, but I still have a soft spot for the game (and a software version on my PSP), and look forward to more of your eye candy :-)

    1. Thanks Greg. I’m hoping to get a few games in down the round once the Doom Lords are finished, and own 2-3 fully-painted teams by the end of the year.

  8. I have tried Blood Bowl a couple of times but never really enjoyed it. I would (under the right circumstances) be willing to give it another go. But no plans at present to do so. I do like the BB figures though ad that is a big incentive!

    1. I’ve played some of the previous editions, Clint, being a big fan of the old styrofoam granite pitch version, so am hoping to have some fun with this latest incarnation too. I am considering doing a simple 6-7 player per team version at some point, to save on time both painting and collecting, but time will tell.

Hopefully this series of postings will tempt you into a few minis or games, and showcasing the latest minis is certainly one of the main aims of these articles :-)

  10. Great start on these two figures Simon, and I love the way you write these Bloodbowl posts :-)

Mabye I could have one of your Bloodbowl balls in my top ten this year ;-0

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. LOL - It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve included a mini in your Top Ten which I have disagreed with ;-) I’m enjoying “Blood Bowl” currently, and hopefully will have an actual figure ready for posting next time.

  11. First Guild Ball. Now Blood Bowl. When is DreadBall going to make an appearance? :P

Can you still make the classic Orc starting line up - 4x Blockers, 4x Blitzers, 1x Thrower, 2x Linesmen? I played a number of the various teams, but I found most success with a Human team favouring a passing game and a M W - type formation.

    1. LOL Roy. I do own “DreadBall” actually, having committed to a few of its Kickstarters in the past - no plans to play the game though; albeit I have some of the figures ready for next year’s “Forgotten Heroes” challenge already ;-)

I believe you can what line-ups you want, Roy, although I’m not that familiar with the new rules. I do know you can buy additional player packs for the teams though which allow you to improve upon the 12 players which come with the two starter set’s sides.

  12. Was always more of a Bright Crusaders fan myself - those old school stripey uniforms were fun if horribly tricky to paint. :)

    1. Ha Ha. The Crusaders have been released I believe, Dai, so I wouldn't rule out my giving them a go at some point in the future if I can get these first few teams finished.
