(Lead) Mountain Musings - "World Eaters" May 2019

World Eaters WIPs - The Chaos Space Marines have been assembled and primed
A sudden, all-consuming urge in recent weeks to play the latest edition of “Warhammer 40K” by “Games Workshop” has lead to this month’s themed attempt to chip away away at my ‘lead mountain’ firmly focusing upon several miniatures set in “the distant future, where a stagnant human civilization is beset by hostile aliens and malevolent supernatural creatures.” In fact, I rather fear my devotion to the Chaos Gods of the Forty-First Millennium has actually caused me to somewhat significantly add to the tower of hard-plastic moulded sprues safely stored away in a corner of my hobby room, rather than reduce its formidable height.

Of course, the beauty of building a daemonic fighting faction based upon the Blood God is that the vast majority of its figures will also be entirely eligible for my “Age Of Sigmar” Blades of Khorne warband, so I haven’t been shy in both buying and building another load of Bloodletters armed with Hellblades. In my experience, these Slaughter-kin are easily a match for even Primaris space marines when able to engage their enemy in close combat and utilise their hand-weapon’s -3 Armour Piercing. Whilst the Crimson Death's 5+ Invulnerability Save seemingly finds favour with the dice gods time and time again…
Bloodreaper WIPs - The daemon leader has been primed, washed and dry-brushed
However, my Chaos force currently badly struggles during the "Warhammer 40K" Shooting Phase, due to none of my current infantry units carrying any sort of firearm whatsoever. Resultantly, I have decided to field a small five-figure unit of Primarch Angron’s finest Heretic Astartes, all armed with either Boltguns or a Plasma Pistol, and assembled from an old, long out-of-production, Chaos Space Marine starter set which I recently uncovered during a big clear-out.

Quite delightfully, I have discovered that this box also contains a 'conversion' sprue with which to personalise my gun-totting World Eaters into a truly recognisable Khorne-devoted force, complete with Chaos standard and all manner of extra blood-drenched iconography. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I have subsequently found myself compelled to purchase a box of the Legion's famed Khorne Bezerkers as well, so plan on predominantly pigmenting my 'ordinary' Chaos Space Marines in black and gold, so as to allow the all-red chainsword-wielding maniacs to really stand out on my tabletop.
Baba Yaga WIP - The resin figure has been cleaned with a modelling knife, primed and dry-brushed
With at least one of my options to provide my 41st-Century warriors with some firepower sorted, another potentially being a plan to include an old Khorne-covered Rhino model which I found alongside my Heretic Astartes, I have also decided to split my current Bloodletter figures in half so my army's centre consists of two daemonic units. This means I need to have another Bloodreaper with which to lead my second warband, so I have been busy assembling and priming just such a mini from the "Start Collecting! Daemons of Khorne" set.

Momentarily stepping completely away from "Games Workshop" though, I also plan to paint one of several "Spectre Miniatures" I recently acquired in order to 'game' some "John Wick" influenced skirmishes. I actually missed the Nottingham-based company's special resin sculpt of Baba Yaga at "Salute" 2019, but was lucky enough to 'bag one' from their website before the figure went out of production...

  1. I wasn't going to comment here, Simon, until you mentioned "John Wick". This greatly interests me and so all I can say is, more please!

    1. Baba Yaga is a great-looking mini, Bryan, albeit I was a bit disappointed that it was resin not metal. However I have a few Russian figures too to paint as opposition, plus some other models I've found, so hopefully they'll be enough for a game once I get going on them.

  2. Uh, isn't Baba Yaga a witch?
The miniature looks interesting but not overly so. I've been eyeing Spectre for some time but don't really know what to make of it. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts about the game.

Great idea adding some World Eaters in your army.

    1. The Baba Yaga reference comes from the first John Wick film, it was a nickname given to him by the Russian mafia.

    2. I bought quite a few “Spectre Miniatures” from their first “Kickstarter” Wouter, and they’ve just sat in their box since, so I’m hoping to get some of them finally painted once ‘Wick’ is finished. I don’t plan on playing their game though, I’ve too many rule-sets I’m currently learning at the moment already. LOL!!!

    3. Spot on Phil, though that reference did puzzle me to begin with.

  3. Well Simon, you're shaming me as the very same miniatures are lurking in the loft unpainted. It's nice to see you're making a start on them and with drilled barrels too.
In regard to the ranged weapons that is a good idea, the background of chaos space marines, World Eaters and Khone Berzerkers has shifted and blurred a lot across the editions. I fielded a pure `bezerker rush' army with 4 rhinos, marines on bikes, deep striking dreadnaughts and terminators. My pile of shame contains 3 heavy support of ranged weapons which will be painted in the legion red and gold colours. It depends on what you're comfortable with.
I succumbed to the very same Spectre Miniatures figure, I too was surprised it was in resin, I went to clean the figure up and found the pistol in the right hand hadn't cat properly. I contacted Spectre who are sending out a replacement. very quick service for a 3 person outfit.

    1. Oh dear Phil, though hopefully I can help encourage you to put some paint on some of them? I’ll be painting shoulder-pads, helmets and clothing red on the World Eaters to break up the black and gold. Think Acroyear from The Micronauts.

I thought the ‘Wick’ figure was pretty poorly cast too, with loads of flash and bubbles. Fortunately, I don’t think it has the issues you raise though, and it sounds like Spectre Miniatures are on the case.

    1. Thanks Dave. I’ve decided to base my OOP Chaos Marines on the smaller bases too, to tie in to their era and make them stand out a bit more from the newer Chaos Marines I bought with “Shadowspear”. I actually hope to have 40 Bloodletters ready for “AoS” and “Warhammer 40K” by the end of next month... and then that’ll be it for daemonic infantry for a while... I hope!!!

  5. It`s great to see you so deeply entrenched in your Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar. I do admit to nearly.. oh so nearly clicking "buy" on Amazon for the huge AoS starter box earlier this week, but great restraint held me back (as we are determined to concentrate of Massive Darkness and Clix for a while, and a new subject just didn't make sense). Sadly things are delayed a bit our end because Hils is over in England as her father just passed away.

Great post Simon. Keep up the good work.

    1. Cheers Steve. Lovin’ “Warhammer 40K” currently, and have another game planned for Saturday as a result - Nurgle vs Titans/Primaris - should be an absolute scream LOL!!!

The beauty of my romance with Nurgle/Khorne is that most of the minis can be used for both “AoS” and “Warhammer 40K”, so I’m still very much inspired by both games. The new “AoS” boxed set is awesome - you must be strong-willed indeed.

Sorry to hear about Hils and her father. Please do pass on my sincerest condolences to her.

Ooooh I will look forward to the AoS and WH40K batreps to come.

    3. Hopefully part 2 of my Black Templars vs Bloodletters will be posted up soon, and then I have a second, larger point game planned. Plus an AAR between Nurgle and some Titans :-)

    5. I do hope so Steve, my plans for many more BatReps this year, isn’t quite working out - as I seem to be painting a lot currently - but I am getting a few more AARs in as I’m certainly playing more games in general.

  6. I think those chaos marines look ace. Makes sense to use the old ones as they don't look out of place even though the new ones look great. Can't wait to see them done. You are really showing some endurance with those bloodletters so hats off! Having just seen the new Hellboy I too thought Baba Yaga was a witch, but did enjoy the first John Wick. Lots to admire as always.

    1. Thank you kindly, Undercoat. I'm actually tempted to see whether I can track down some more of the old Chaos Marines in the near future as the kits have loads of options. I really like the Bloodletters, and my only fear is that once done with the forty daemons, I may look at doing something similar with my Nurgle Plaguebearers!!!
