Empire Of The Dead - London Bobby

This metal 28mm miniature is one of the eight figures found within the boxed set EOTD-07 London Bobbies by “West Wind Productions”. The model is my fifth and final submission for the Mo’vember 2014 challenge Dick Garrison is running over on his blog “Rantings From Under The Wargames Table”. It’s also the first of five models I’m currently painting from the miniature manufacturer’s “Empire Of The Dead” range to use as a State gang for the post apocalyptic skirmish ruleset “Across The Dead Earth”.
The Victorian Policeman was reasonably simple to paint once I had decided upon how I was going to paint his famous dark blue uniform. As a result he was initially undercoated with “Vallejo” Heavy Blue and then given two healthy washes of the “Citadel” Shade Nuln Oil. The copper’s cape was just painted Abaddon Black. Whilst I picked out his silver belt buckle, custodian crest and fastening chains with a combination of Boltgun Metal and more Nuln Oil. His truncheon was painted with “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna and a wash of “Citadel” Agrax Earthshade.
As something of a diversion I’ve been pottering away on this rather tall “Heroclix” model of Frankenstein’s Monster. I’m actually using this figure as a test subject to see whether I can simply use the pre-paint as the undercoat and just block in my colours on top of it; as opposed to applying at least another layer of paint over the models as I currently do. Despite being a 28mm scale model it is actually larger than the 40mm “Graven Images” version I painted up as part of Zomtober earlier this year: http://fantorical.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/look-its-moving-its-alive-its-alive.html
In addition I’m also basing and preparing even more of the “Wizkids” miniatures for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. I’m hoping to submit the Joker model as the Comedy subject for one of the bonus rounds.

  1. I just love those English Bobbies, so much character to those sculpts. I'm a big fan of Nulin Oil as well and use it to create tan skin tones.

The Frankenstein piece turned out really well as did the others. The Joker would be a perfect entry for the Comedic theme.

    1. Many thanks Anne. I still miss the OOP Badab Black but Nuln Oil has merits all of its own and certainly gave me the dark 'Bobby' blue uniform colour I was after. I'll have to have a look at your blog and see how you use it to create tan skin tones. The Graven Images Frankenstein was great fun to paint and didn't need much effort. Just a great sculpt by the Late Jim Bowen. The Joker is one of several minis I have lined up with a Comedy theme as I was hoping to do some sort of 'comedy week' as a bit of fun prior to that particular bonus deadline - as long as Curt accepts one :-) The pre-paint is a little thick on the Joker model though, and will probably need an undercoat to get rid of that pink and black wash - sadly making its details even softer.

    1. Cheers Simon. You seem to have as many avatar pictures as you have FB groups :-) I'm a bit stuck with the "Heroclix" Frankenstein now though as I need to pick out all its stitches and that's going to require a steady hand and some patience. Hopefully I'll find the motivation to do so over the next few days. Loads of weird and wonderful models being prepared for the comp.

    1. Thanks Michael. When they initially arrived I must confess to having been slightly disappointed as I was anticipating them being a bit larger tbh, or rather bulkier. But they are cracking sculpts and nice to paint.

  4. Smashing last entry for Mo'vemeber Simon, those are really nice Victorian Bobbies aren't they, might have to pick some of them up as charecters for VBCW at some point but as I said I must get some rank and file stuff done first.

It sounds like I'm going to have trouble just keeping up with your posts never mind how you'll keep up with the painting!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Much appreciated Roger, and it has been a real pleasure doing Mo'vember with you. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing what you had come up with each week :-) Looking forward to seeing your rank & file, and I certainly recommend these British Bobbies as a future purchase. They're great. Take care.

  5. You have a lot of good stuff on the go. Frankenstein's Monster and Red Hulk are both stand out models for me. The London copper has come out very well.

    1. Cheers Vampifan, I'm actually hoping things will now start to calm down once the Painting Challenge starts. The Red Hulk model is a stunning sculpt and rather large. I actually bit the bullet as it costs a small fortune over here but felt the other "Heroclix" versions simply didn't do him justice, so I ended up getting him from the US along with a few other models which are devilishly expensive this side of the pond. Sadly they didn't have any of your MiB models though but I'll keep looking :-)

    1. Hello there. I didn't spray them with anything. I simply started by brushing on a double layer of “Vallejo” Heavy Blue as an undercoat and then washed them with "Citadel" Nuln Oil.
