The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge 2014 - Side Challenge - Part Two

The Black Mist WIPs - Both models have been undercoated with "Citadel" Abaddon Black
One of the mini-projects I wanted to complete during the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is to paint a “Reaper” miniature in both its original metal form and its Bones variant. Such a task will not only provide me with a miniature which I can submit to the imminent Anti-Hero Bonus Round. But that miniature can then also be dispatched to Curt as payment for entering the Painting Challenge in the first place. The second figure would also come in handy as my prize to the eventual winner of “The Pulp Trio” side-challenge.

As a result I’ve based both the “Reaper” Chronoscope metal model entitled The Black Mist Vigilante (code 50217) and the “Reaper” Chronoscope Bones plastic miniature The Black Mist (code 80007); sculpted by B. Ridolfi.

To be honest the difference in quality of their detail was rather evident before I’d even removed them from their packaging, as the Bones figure has several edges which appear to have been torn as they’re rather jagged. Perhaps unsurprisingly the model also took a bit more effort to undercoat black, as the paint simply kept pooling for the first few layers. The sculpt is clearly heavily inspired by “The Shadow” from the Thirties pulp magazines, so I plan on both being predominantly black in colour with some charcoal and deep red breaking the monotony up.
Not Tarzan WIPs - All five models from Kojar Of The Forest Tribe have been undercoated
I have also turned some attention to some of the models from the “Pulp Figures” collection PLT09 Kojar Of The Forest Tribe. Having painted all three of Bob Murch’s wonderful Killer Apes, I have started work on Bongo the Chimp, as well as some close approximations of Tarzan’s Jane and Boy.
More Hired Killer WIPs - The gangsters clothing will range from green-brown to light grey-blue and cream
In addition I am still slowly progressing the ten hired killer miniatures from “Pulp Figures” “Gangland Justice” range, and hope to have a couple finished by the end of the week.

  1. This is interesting, Myles has the reaper bones version of the bone dragon (it was quite a bit cheaper then the metal version), but he hasn't attempted painting it yet so I look forward to seeing the difference and problems you encounter with your side by side comparison (I like the figure of the shadow anyway). The jungle family look good too though. Jane looks a bit miserable, she probably needs more fruit in her diet!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Cheers Roger. I hope to have the majority of these two minis finished for a posting on Wednesday, as well as Bongo the Chimp; having almost finished the little fellow already. Indeed painting these models will hopefully keep me sane as I have a lot of models which just require basing and varnishing for this Saturday's Challenge submission deadline. I think Jane's a bit miffed with her dress so I plan to brighten her up with a leopard skin if I can.

  2. I heavily backed Reaper Bones a couple of years ago and I found very little difference between the plastic and metal figures. I look forward to seeing the results of your own experiments.
Once again, I am very impressed with the quality of Bob Murch's Pulp figures. Both sets are quite outstanding.

    1. My initial impressions of Bones aren't quite as positive as yours Bryan, but it is very early days yet. Tomorrow will be the test as I start highlighting with charcoal and prepping the scarf for a nice deep red. Bob's stuff is just great and if Bongo comes out half as well as the Killer Apes have, then I'll be rather pleased... perhaps enough for a Batman-Cheeta team-up ;-)

  3. This is going to be interesting. The bones minis are a lot cheaper. Bongo, Jane and Boy but where's Tarzan. Bob Murch's stuff is superb, I love those gangster mini's.

    1. Bob, Kojar/Tarzan is at a similar stage to the others but I wanted to stick with these minis first and post him on the next update. Bob's gangsters are great aren't they.

  4. Bub Murch's figures are really great and we've now got easier access to them (in the UK that is). Bongo is great a really fun figure, thiough I can't say I'm taken by "Jane and Boy"
It's strange (to me at least) how varied the resins are from different manufacturers, you'd have thought by now they'd know what worked and what doesn't re painting,
but I guess they all think that their own is the best.I do like the Mist figure too (both of them). btw

    1. Bongo is very cute, and Boy isn't too bad a figure either. I'm also not overly impressed with Jane, but we'll see. The Black Mist is a nice sculpt but as I say the detail is somewhat softer on the Bones version. How this'll affect the dry-brushing etc I'll discover this evening.

  5. Bongo seems like a fun miniature to paint. I'm with you on Bones. Completely underwhelmed by the material's qualities (or lack thereof).

    1. I've a small quantity of Bones so I'm hoping it'll be okay to paint. But I'm not especially confident at the moment, It reminds me a lot of the restic material "Mantic" use for "Deadzone".

  6. Hmm, I've not got any Bones miniatures (yet?), so seeing other people's experiences is always nice. And you've reminded me how muh I want to get some of Bob Murch's figures :-) .
