"I Am Dmitri Bukharin -- The New Crimson Dynamo!"

"The Crimson Dynamo knows Iron Man -- and you -- brought down so easily -- are no Iron Man."
This 28mm pre-painted plastic "Wizkids" model of the Crimson Dynamo is miniature number 52 from the Marvel "Heroclix" Xplosion range. "Considered to be the definitive version of the character", Dmitri Bukharin was the fifth man to don the Soviet power armour and made his debut within the pages of Issue One Hundred and Nine of "Iron Man" in April 1978.

Having given the figure an undercoat of "Vallejo" Heavy Red, Tony Stark's nemesis was treated to a heavy wash of "Citadel" Carroburg Crimson, before being dry-brushed with more "Vallejo" Heavy Red. I then gave the Russian super-villain a glaze of "Citadel" Bloodletter.

"Star Wars" WIPs - IG-88 and Chewbacca should soon be finished
Such a simple paint-job has given me a little time to potter about on three of my favourite "Fantasy Flight" plastic miniatures for the company's "Star Wars" board game "Imperial Assault". I've only just started to apply an initial layer of "Vallejo" Bronze on the brown-coloured leg-armour worn by Dengar but have already encountered something of a dilemma. The sculpt of the heavily bandaged bounty hunter really does contain an incredible amount of detail, and although I've initially 'picked out' the thin metallic straps holding his outfit together, I may eventually need to compromise such delicate brushwork simply to retain my own sanity.

Both IG-88 and Chewbacca however are proving reasonably easy to progress and have been appropriately dry-brushed and washed with brown and black ink respectively. The assassin droid just needs some additional highlighting, as well as some straps and wires to be painted, before being finished. Whilst the Wookie now needs another couple of brown dry-brushes before I start work on his weapon, satchel and ammunition belt.
Cyclopean Alien WIPs - The shaggy hide of these 'pulp' extra-terrestrials will be green
One of my aspirations for this year is to try and paint all the wonderful miniatures people have generously gifted me in recent years. These six Cyclopean Aliens were a surprise present from Roger of "Rantings From Under The Wargames Table" fame when we met at Salute 2015. Made by "Wargames Supply Dump", the metal multi-limbed creatures can be found within the manufacturer's Miscellaneous Miniatures range.

  1. Simon, are you planning on using those Cyclopean Aliens in your Doctor Who and the Seeds of Death game? They look like they'd fit in very well.

    1. I hadn't thought about that Bryan. What a splendid idea!! I was planning on using them as opposition for my Bob Murch New York Cops, as they're of similar size and proportions - plus I've been itching to game with the cops since I painted them this time last year. Ultimately though I want to use them as opposition for Dick Garrison himself; a pulp sci-fi range I own plenty of and have sadly never painted...

    1. Cheers Gordon. The Cyclopean aliens are certainly 'eye-catching' aren't they? ;-)

  4. Nice work on the crimson dynamo another I haven't heard of before. The IA figures will look cool when finished. Those aliens look great as Bryan mentioned they would look great in your seeds of doom project as well.

    1. Cheers Simon. I'm always pleased when I introduce comic book characters to people who haven't heard of them before. The Cyclopean Aliens do seem rather popular, so I'll be cracking on with them. Though I have a few H.R. Giger ones in the pipeline ahead of them...

  5. Nice work on the Crimson one. Those Cyclopeans are a bit weird, aren't they? They look a bit like a Jim Henson creation, maybe...

    1. Thanks Hugh. I like to do a simple mini every now and then, both to clear some space and give me time to concentrate on an especially time-consuming mini - the later of which is now finished and waiting to be posted ;-) I think the Cyclopean Aliens look smashing, and do indeed have a touch of Henson about them.

  6. Whilst i had that Crimson Dynamo figure, I always thought it was a little too skinny to be a guy in armour, which is why I had his hands off to add to my Powerfist conversion.
And more Imperial Assault! Curse you, Simon! I have to admit that the sculpts of Dengar and IG-88 actually make them look cooler than they were in the movies - no more Bandage Guy and Coffee-pot-bot now.
And I'll be interested to see what you do with your cyclone an aliens, as I too have some...is this actually generosity on Rogers part or a fiendish invasion plan? Never mind watching the skies, it's our letterboxes we should be concerned about. ;-)

    1. Cheers Jez. I too am not convinced at the actual size of the Crimson Dynamo, and Dmitri Bukharin was a big chap too. There is actually a second 'bulkier' version of the 5th Dynamo which looks much more the part. But this is the one I own. However I am painting a later version of the Soviet power armour which requires a 40mm base and looks far more formidable imho.

IG-88 and Dengar are cracking sculpts imho, and well worth investing in if you can get their packs at a discounted price.

I own most of Roger's "Dick Garrison" line and these will fit in very nicely once painted. However you raise a valid point as they are certainly making me want to get some more of his wonderful minis as a result :-)

  7. I like your paintwork on the Crimson Dynamo, though I agree that the mini is a little small, the Star wars stuff is brilliant and your painting does indeed make the bounty hunters look better than the film counterparts.

Glad you like the Cyclopeans (as they are Roger originals you know), never mind your women they have come to earth to take you tuppences'!!!! (oh yours are based on stlotta's, oh well never mind then).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Many thanks indeed Roger. These'll probably be the last of the "Star Wars" minis I start for now... as I'm planning a "Frostgrave" February to finally get that warband finished and get some games in :-o

The Cyclopeans are great, and I'm hoping that they are the start of a huge push towards painting up my quite considerable "Dick Garrison" collection :-)

    1. Cheers Michael. Simple stuff to allow me to get on painting this week's AHPC Defensive Terrain Themed Challenge. But the "Imperial Assault" stuff is very good imho.

  11. Dengar is by far my favourite of the Bounty Hunters shown in Empire Strikes Back. Glad you are working on him!

Those aliens look crazy silly - bet they'll be loads of fun to paint.
