"If You Move A Muscle, You Will Be Destroyed."

"This whole domain is now keyed to my biological rhythms."
This 34mm tall metal miniature of the Master is manufactured by “Warlord Games” and can be found in the "I Am The Master" boxed set from their "Into The Time Vortex" range. "Horribly disfigured" and on his last regeneration, this particular grisly-looking incarnation of the renegade Time Lord used the source of the Traken Union's power to help him merge with the body of Consul Tremas in the January 1981 BBC Television story “The Keeper Of Traken”.

The figure was initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Black surface primer, and treated to a layer of Black. It was then heavily dry-brushed with Heavy Charcoal before being washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil. The evil villain was subsequently dry-brushed with (more) "Vallejo" Heavy Charcoal and had some of this tattered clothing additionally highlighted with some "German Grey".
The Genesis Ark WIPs - The Time Lord Prison Ship has been primed, layered, shaded and dry-brushed
The Master's decomposing hands and face were carefully 'picked out' with a combination of "Vallejo" Iraqi Sand, "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade. His 'lifeless' eyes were 'dotted in' using dabs of "Vallejo" White and more Strong Tone Quickshade, whilst his energy pistol was treated to a combination of "Citadel" Ironbreaker and Nuln Oil.

Impressively bringing two Fate Tokens to the table in the Nottingham-based company's "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" rule-set, this "Unique" single model faction, is able to withstand "Wounds (2)" as well as 'equip' the "You Will Obey Me" Adventure Card for free. This means that "once per turn" the Master "may attempt to hypnotise" any enemy character (except Special Characters or Incorporeals) within 6", and even if he fails to take control of them, they can still be "Shocked."
Draconian WIPs - The regal aliens have had some of their details layered
Alongside the two remaining Cult of Skaro Daleks I have recently started painting, I have also begun work on a piece of appropriate resin scenery for them to protect. The Genesis Ark comes as part of the "Maximum Extermination!" expansion set, and having based it upon one of the 40mm thin-lipped circular bases I use for objective markers I have been loyally layering it in between some of my other mini-projects.

Finally, having sat somewhat unloved on my painting table for a while, I have finally started properly progressing two of my Draconians. I've actually found the tremendous detail on these Noble sculpts a little intimidating (especially that on their back), but now armed with the relevant reference material I hope to finish this pair of reptilian humanoids reasonably quickly...

  1. Emperor Palpatine armed with a blaster. I've seen it all now!

Quick... Quick... Break the Internet by teasing that WG are encroaching on FFG's Star Wars license :P
The Mouse would not be pleased. And I'm not talking about any characters belonging to an anthropomorphic animal skirmish game!

    1. LOL Roy. I'd not actually seen the similarities before... but seeing as the Decaying Master first appeared in 1976 ("Deadly Assassin") and a proper Palpatine not until 1983 ("Return Of The Jedi") then I think it should be the Mouse who'd be worried ;-)

    2. Since writing the above, I've just spotted all the FFG news releases on X-Wing 2nd Ed. and scrolled through the discussion posts of a favoured X-Wing wiki forum I lurk upon. Never mind the Mouse, I'm not happy.

Suffice to say, I'm not [re-]buying into X-Wing version two. Sod that. What an absolutely unnecessary, profit-margin-aimed, expensive con. I hope it fails!

    3. Yes, I have spotted "X-Wing" 2nd Edition, and that they've released 'upgrade' cards for the old spaceships; presumably you need to buy them though.

  2. Firstly, where is my preview pic! I do love Who Wednesday and this has a diverse selection for me. I love that Master. The sculpt is better than the other one you did, but I can't help but prefer the face on the Blacktree Design one. Maybe it was your paint job. Love this one though, nice one. The time Lord prison is coming along nicely, as is the Draconian, so I look forward to seeing the completed models in the future. Lovely read and eye candy as always.

    1. Thanks Undercoat. No preview pic this week as I've too many of my own minis to paint. This "Warlord Games" Master is far more dynamically posed than the "Black Tree Design" version, and I do like its gun. But those dead eyes were damnably difficult to pick out for me.

  3. Great work on the master Simon, the Genesis Ark seems to be progressing nicely and good to see some more paint on the Draconians

    1. Cheers Dave. I must confess these weekly postings are really making me focus on what minis I need to get painted, wish I'd thought of it ages ago :-)

  4. Three fantastic figures, Simon. Right from the outset I have been a big fan of Warlord Games' "Doctor Who" range. I have the Draconian set and the other two are high on my shopping list. By the way, you may be interested to know that I have a number of WG "Doctor Who" figures on my painting table right now, including a set I've never seen mentioned on your blog - "The Woman Who Lived."

    1. Thanks Bryan. Great news to hear of some future "Warlord Games" "Doctor Who" minis coming to "Vampifan's World of the Undead". I do have Ashildr on my painting table, but have never mentioned her as I've yet to get very far painting any of her trio of models; albeit "Me" the Highwayman isn't far from a posting. It'll be great to see how you've got on with them :-)

  6. Really nice paintwork all round Simon, though I think I prefer the Blacktree version of the master (even if he is a little bit "cuddlier", the Genesis Ark has come out really nicely too, the colour looks spot on to me.

The Draconian though I think is the best figure here, and the pose would lend itself perfectly to one of your statues.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. I actually did do a statue of the Draconian Noble here: http://fantorical.blogspot.co.uk/2017/12/may-i-have-permission-to-address-emperor.html

Great minds clearly think alike, eh? ;-)

  11. I'm curious about something, Simon. I've bern looking at the Maximum Extetmination boxed set and the Genesis Ark looks like a fairly hefty piece of kit. Could you tell me how big it is, as it looks substantially bigger than the other models in this set? Also, is the Supreme Dalek a bit taller than the plastic Time War Daleks, as he appears to be from the pictures? I'm trying to decide if I do get this set or not, so your help would be invaluable. Thanks.

    1. Hi Jez. The Genesis Ark is 42mm tall, and the Supreme Dalek comes as a three-piece metal model which is quite a bit taller than the plastics, as you would expect from the TV show scale. Hope this helps. It's a great kit, and I hope to be covering more of it with next week's "Warlord Who Wednesday" posting :-)

    2. Thanks for that, Simon. That's really helpful.

Have you seen that I managed to lure Steve back into the blogosphere? Our upcoming joint project will mean that I'll actually be painting 'proper' historical figure for once. Should be an interesting change of pace.

    3. No probs Jez. Good to see Steve back in the blogosphere too - good work :-) Looking forward to seeing proper historicals on the buffet's menu.

    1. Thanks Joe. The "Black Tree Design" Decaying Master does have a certain charm. Hopefully I'll be able to tell you more about the Genesis Ark and Draconians once they're finished ;-)

  13. I can't keep up with your positively crazy ability to paint and post so regularly! I'm like 5 posts behind now. Yeesh..... ;)

Love the Master, though I agree he does have similarities to (My all time fav) Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. Wonder if Lucas was a Who fan?

That Golden Ark looks like it could work in a number of systems and genres for a fun objective or terrain piece.

Draconian so far looks like the Mandarin from Marvel.
