"I Am Usually Referred To As The Master."

"We Time Lords are expected to face death with dignity."
This 32mm-tall "pewter" model of the Master is produced by “Warlord Games” and can be bought as part of their "I Am The Master" boxed set. Based upon Roger Delgado's incarnation of the renegade Time Lord, the "recurring villain" made his first appearance in Robert Holmes' January 1971 BBC television story "Terror Of The Autons" and would "become a main character in the show's eighth season."

Originally primed using two layers of "Vallejo" Black, the evil Gallifreyan was dry-brushed with Heavy Charcoal and subsequently shaded courtesy of some "Citadel" Nuln Oil. In addition I 'picked out' his shirt sleeves with a line of "Vallejo" Dead White, and applied some extra Black on the fiend's leather gloves in order to create a little contrast.
"It's a mayday, sir. SS Pevensey Castle, they say they're being attacked."
The Master's face was undercoated using some "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone and washed in "Citadel" Reikland Fleshshade. I later used some (more) "Vallejo" Skintone to highlight his nose, ears, mouth area and parts of his forehead. As a last touch, I dry-brushed some Heavy Bluegrey across his hair, blended it in with a little "Citadel" Nuln Oil.

With the alien time traveller finished, I'm now looking forward to pairing him up with my fully-painted Sea Devils faction for an upcoming "Doctor Who: Exterminate!" battle against the Doctor. Armed with both a Tissue Compression Eliminator, as well as a Fencing Blade, Roger Delgado's character generates a highly useful pair of Fate Tokens and has "Two Wounds" (allowing him to twice "choose to ignore the effect" of a Shocked or Exterminated result by placing a wound token on his Recruitment card).
Draconian WIPs - A Guard, Soldier and Noble all in various stages of painting
Alongside owning the Traits "Sneaky" (which means he may always claim cover even if in the open), and "Parry" (which allows him to utilise Defence Battle cards in order to cancel certain enemy hits), this version of the Master may also be equipped with the Adventure Card "You Will Obey Me!" for free; potentially allowing him to hypnotise an enemy Character within 6" once per turn. The goatee-bearded villain can additionally take the Adventure Card "Tempus Fugit" (which under particular circumstances can force an opponent to discard one of their Adventure Cards "with no effect").

Having completed my latest Master, I have continued plugging away at the Draconian models I need so as to field a faction of the reptilian humanoids for the tabletop. My main priority is to paint the three pistol-toting sculpts required in order to deploy the Draconian Soldiers Recruitment Card, but as I had a spare Noble and Bodyguard model, I thought I might as well pigment the lot as a batch...

  1. The Master looks rather good, despite his shiny black suit. ;-)
Given the size of your lead mountain, I'm surprised you don't do a lot more batch painting. It's the best way to go to cut down on the amount of unpainted minis. I currently have over 40 figures on my painting desk right now and by the end of next week they'll be finished. Indeed, ten will be finished tomorrow.

    1. Thanks Bryan. I don't do much in the way of batch painting at all, and even when I try it tends to be I'll simply do two minis at a time and that is all. I simply like to focus on one mini and try to get them finished before moving on another unless I'm waiting for paint to dry.

  2. Nice job on the master. The Draconian's are coming along at a fair clip as well. I tend to do the same doing bits here and there whilst using the same paints.

    1. Cheers Simon. Yep, even when I say "batch" I mean I'll have the group in front of me, but I'll still only do a couple at a time at most - usually a simple paint-job alongside a more difficult mini.

  3. I well remember the master, as at about the time he appeared I stopped watching Dr. Who!
Great rendition of him (as I remember him too - has he changed ?); i's always difficult painting black on a figure, but you've managed well.
I like the animated Draconian, the rest look so docile!

    1. Thanks Joe. Roger Delgado's Master isn't the one I grew up with it - that was Anthony Ainley, but he is still the Master in my books, and the one I think of when the name is used. I rather like the docile Draconians as they're a bit easier to paint than the more animated one ;-)

  6. Great job on the Master, he was always, and still is a great adversary for the Doctor. Purely as an aside, I was walking though Pevensey Castle this morning, no sign of any Sea Devils though. ;)

    1. Cheers Michael. LOL, I’m a huge fan of the Sea Devils, as I’ve said before, so I’m sorry you didn’t see any of the Silurian’s aquatic cousins :-)

  7. That is a really good likeness of the Master, and brought to life wonderfully. Really like him a lot. Sea Devil batrep! Yes please!! Those Draconians are nice models too, even if I don't remember them from the tv show.

    1. Thanks Undercoat. I’m just working on some scenarios for “Warlord Games”, hence my eagerness to trial some thoughts out for a BatRep :-)

  8. Great job on the master Simon, he was a very iconic rendition, but as with the Doctor when he regenerates the personality changes can bring some interesting new dynamics.
great to see your finishing the Draconians, as they've been there for a while now

    1. Cheers Dave. I fear I still have a few Draconians to go, as I’ll be finishing off the spare models alongside the handful I need for a Faction for “Doctor Who: Exterminate!” As a result they’ll be a few more WIP postings to come - but I do think they look good on the tabletop with all that green and gold.

  9. Simply the best rendition of the Master there was (closely followed by Ainsley), and a really nice sculpt too, love your Sea Devils, and they look superb en'mass.

    Cheers Roger.
