The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge 2014 - WIP - Week Nine

Yeti WIP - Brown wash over Light Brown undercoat, then black wash and finally a Light Brown wet-brush
This Yeti model by "Black Tree Design" is one of five such figures I've been progressing this weekend. As they are based upon the Great Intelligence's mechanical monsters from the BBC Television "Doctor Who" 1967 story "The Abominable Snowmen" I've gone with a somewhat light brown colour scheme. However I have also washed parts of the 'hairy beastie' with some "Citadel" Nuln Oil in order to darken the area around the eyes, hands and webbed feet.

This particular model is my 'test piece' as I wanted to see how a wet-brush would work for the creatures fur, as the sculpt is very well-detailed. I'm not convinced it has worked at all, to be honest, so expect five dry-brushed Yeti heading on their way to the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge next weekend.
Travers WIP - The robotic hand and eye piece have been painted Charcoal and the washed with Black Shade
Another submission close to completion will (finally) be this nicely posed miniature of Stefan Travers accompanied by four more Federated Security Guards. These "Crooked Dice Game Design Studio" figures have been sat gathering dust upon my painting table for a few weeks now. But I have finally started picking out the Federation Carbines on the black-clad minions, and applied some black washes to their Commander's model.
"Heroclix" WIP - Flesh and Red washes for Silver Samurai, and Gold for Moon Knight's throwing blade
Finally I've been carrying on 'chipping' away at the mountain of pre-painted "Wizkids" plastic models I own, and hope to have finished painting these rather nice models of the Silver Samurai, Moon Knight and The Thing within the next few days. Apart from a few washes here, and some general tidying up here and there, these three miniatures should be ready for next weekend as well.

  1. Your making some fine progress there Bk. I do like those Yeti dude. Travers is looking good too. Moon Knight is superb, white is such a hard colour to get right but I think you've cracked it on him. Would like to see more pictures of The Thing as well.

    1. Many thanks Bob. Just 'closing down' all these little mini-projects is rather satisfying. Hopefully I'll be able to post up some more pics of The Thing and Moon Knight etc as I get close to completing them over the next few days. Plus there's a load more 'halfway finished' minis to push on with.

  2. finishing of mostly done figures is a great way of emptying your paint table. The yetis are great and look like something to build a scenario around! Also loving the repaints :)

    1. Cheers CW. Plenty of partially-completed minis getting the attention they need at the moment, and the Yetis are part of a much larger Master vs Doctor campaign I have planned. Glad you're enjoying the repaints too :-)

  4. I love that Yeti figure, Simon. I'd have thought that dry-brushing would work best on him. Worth a try?
The other figures are coming along very nicely and I'm sure you'll be pleased to finish them and get them off your painting table ready to game with.

    1. Cheers Bryan. My wee shaggy beastie has been rewashed and will be dry-brushed this evening. Thought it was worth a dry, but it just didn't look right. Sadly I've loads more semi-painted minis waiting... and some lycanthropes from a company called "Slap" ;-)

  5. They look great Simon. I haven't tried using that technique but like Bryan says I would of thought a drybrush and then a wash to blend the colours would of been a better one to use. Great looking sculpt. Nice to see the Fedsec forces so close to completition as well another push and they'll be done :)

    1. Thanks Simon. Dry-brush is definitely the right way to go for these minis. Be glad to get these Fed Sec done... still a few more to go afterwards though :-o

  6. Great finish on the Yeti, that I do remember seeing the first time around, but in black and white !
The diversity of figures you own, both only and new always amazes me.

    1. Cheers Zabadak. I do enjoy a wide range of painting subjects :-) I've now redone the Yetis, so hopefully you'll like them even more now and I'm hoping to capture some of the b&w feel to them by having them light brown rather than dark.

  7. What everyone else has said about the Yeti Simon, I've seen the rather moth eaten remains of the actual suits and they are uite dark brown in colour but as you say look a lot lighter on the telly, I thinks yours is the better way to go with these, I'm also warming to this version of the Thing too in your pic I can't quite make out his feet, but they look a little "tall" and big to me (might just be the picture)?

    Keep it up, Roger.

    1. Thanks Roger. You can't beat an eye witness account of seeing a Yeti, even if it was a moth-eaten one ;-) Ben has huge black boots, which will hopefully stand out a little more once the base is finished. I'm hopeful he'll be finished by this weekend, so I'll try and do an 'over the top' angled photo so you can see the whole him.

  8. Actually I think you shouldn't give up on the yeti yet. With extra gentle drybrushed highlights on areas around the darkened fur of it's face, etc, you'll really help to bring out the differences in the shades all the better.

    1. Cheers Dai. I'll be back at the Yeti test piece with a paint brush tomorrow, and will be trying once again to bring out that detail :-)
