Painting Challenge: Week Thirteen - 28mm Heroclix Miniatures

The subject of my final week’s Painting Challenge are six 28mm plastic models by “Wizkids” from their pre-painted “Heroclix” range. Five of the miniatures are copies of the Thug figure from the Marvel Infinity Challenge set. I actually painted an identical figure back in February and plan to use this as the basis for these guys’ paint scheme. The sixth model is Catwoman from the DC Hypertime set.
Sticking with the “Heroclix” theme, I’ve already started applying some coats of paint to Groot and Rocket Racoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy starter set. Although the model of the Monarch of Planet X is based upon the character’s design for the film, I much prefer the darker brown colour scheme used in the comic books, so have gone with a “Vallejo” Heavy Sienna undercoat as opposed to the silver birch grey of the pre-paint. I am aware that there are two (seemingly far larger) Groot “Heroclix” figures on the market which are based upon the Flora Colossus who debuted in Issue Thirteen of “Tales To Astonish”; including one wearing his Guardians uniform. But due to their prices (on Ebay at least) I doubt I’ll be picking either up until I next make a bulk order from the United States.

Painting Challenge: Week Twelve - (More) 10mm Pendraken Miniatures

Following on from the subject of my previous Painting Challenge, this week sees me needing to paint some more 10mm models from "Pendraken Miniatures"; albeit this time I'll be concentrating on some tanks from the Second World War rather than some heavy cavalry from the English Civil War. As a result I'll be concentrating on three T70b Russian Light Tanks models from the Middlesbrough based manufacturer's Code SV16.

I'm also close to finishing painting the Judge Giant 28mm model I received as part of my "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" Kickstarter pledge. As with so many of the "Mongoose Publishing" figures I've painted from this Justice Department range, this street judge has proved a frustrating subject to complete. But at last I just need to ink and clean up the red lining on the Judge's helmet, and then paint on the badge above his visor.
In addition I've managed to apply a double undercoat of "Vallejo" Heavy Blue to the first of three models I've taken from the "Empire Of The Dead" boxed set EOTD-07 London Bobbies by "West Wind Productions".

Retained Knights - Part Three

These three 15mm "The Ion Age" miniatures from selection IAF008 Retained Knight Post Charlie actually caused me more work than I planned. For whilst painting their red hands I realised I'd actually failed to 'pick out' the grips to their Angis Rifles on the previous Prydian Army models I've painted. As a result I ended up repainting three of my previously finished Retained Knights.

The models were initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Blue before being washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil. Their hands were then picked out with "Vallejo" Heavy Red, before these areas were treated to a glaze of "Citadel" Bloodletter. Finally the models' weapons were simply painted using the "Citadel" combination of Boltgun Metal with Nuln Oil.
In order to give my 'Rogue Trader Era' Crimson Fist Space Marine force some additional heavy weapon firepower, I've now started painting a Retained Knight armed with an Anvil 888 launcher from the same selection, and plan to base him on a small "Battlefront Miniatures" stand alongside an Anvil loading model from code IAF001 Retained Knight Post Alpha.

Finally I am close to completing my 28mm Judge Dekker model from the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game". Having finally completed the eyes and face of this "Mongoose Publishing" miniature, I've simply got to finish washing the judge's lawgiver and 'tidy her up' with some more "Citadel" Abaddon Black before treating the model to a layer of Gloss Varnish. I've even made some headway on completing her base in order to 'get the figure on the tabletop' sooner.

Modern Middle Eastern Alliance Fedayeen - Part One

These six bases of 6mm "GHQ" miniatures are the start of a large Fedayeen Squad I'm currently painting as a Frontline Asset for my Middle Eastern Alliance (MEA) army. The force currently consists of a unit leader, accompanied by five stands of soldiers armed with assault rifles and utilises models taken from the "Micro Armour" stock codes TW1 Mujahadin Individual Infantrymen and TW2 Mujahadin Individual Heavy Weapons.

As I've previously mentioned when compiling the Revered Leader stand for my MEA force I've found it rather difficult at this tiny scale to identify the leader bases from amidst the rest of the infantry. So in order to more easily recognize the Fedayeen unit leader I placed a donkey (doubtless heavily laden with ammunition and additional supplies) besides the kneeling/pointing figure.

The models were initially undercoated with "Vallejo" White, washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil and dry-brushed with more "Vallejo" White in order to bring out their detail. I then 'picked out' the soldier's footwear, weapons, hands and faces with "Citadel" Abaddon Black. The areas of skin were painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone and "Citadel" Ogryn Flesh wash. Many of the models were additionally adorned with one or two ammunition belts, which I painted using a second hand pot of "Vallejo" Brass followed by a wash of "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade.

In a complete change of scale I've also continued to labour on with these 28mm models from the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" by "Mongoose Publishing". I've now finished painting all of the gold areas on Judge Dekker and Judge Giant, and sealed these areas with a wash of "Citadel" Devlan Mud. In addition I've started to complete their elbow pads and gloves using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Green with "Citadel" Thrakka Green.

Muster First Patrol - Part Three

These three 15mm miniatures come from the "The Ion Age" code IAF022 Muster First Patrol, and have already seen action against my combined painted horde of "Ground Zero Games" Xenomorphs and "Pendraken Miniatures" Face Huggers.

I plan to paint up a good number more of these Guardsmen, at least another six stands, in order to be able to field a force substantial enough to capture the spirit of a 'volley of a thousand lasguns'. But for now I'm going to turn my attention to a small base representing a Lieutenant, and another to use as an Orderly; both with similar colour schemes to those used in the Rogue Trader days when Mark Copplestone was sculpting the Imperial Guard.

Currently I've only got as far as undercoating the models with two coats of "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey and 'blocking in' some of their non-uniform areas, such as their boots and weapons, with "Citadel" Abaddon Black. Unlike the Guardsmen, these two 15mm miniatures will require an undercoat of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna on their body armour and shoulder pads in readiness for an application of gold.

I have however managed to paint on the initial layer of "Vallejo" Gold onto my two remaining models from the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" by "Mongoose Publishing". I still need to paint a second neater layer over this first coat in order to stop any Heavy Sienna from showing through, but once this phase of the painting is complete then Judge Dekker and Judge Giant will both be well on their way to being (finally) finished.

Baccus 6mm North African Buildings - Part Two

Continuing on with my current Middle Eastern 6mm themed project, I've painted up three more North African buildings from my old packet of "Baccus 6mm" resin Eastern Mediterranean buildings.

Having previously shied away from the 'almost bleach white' colour scheme found on the "Baccus 6mm" website, I undercoated all of the models with a double layer of "Vallejo" Iraqui Sand and then washed them with "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade. Each building was then dry-brushed with more "Vallejo" Iraqui Sand before I applied a final highlight of White. The windows were 'picked out' using "Citadel" Abaddon Black, whilst the doors painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna" and "The Army Painter" Strong Tone Quickshade.

Disappointingly I did attempt to replicate 'picking out' the dark roof posts which protrude from the front and back facings of two of the (smaller) buildings, as per the painted examples on the company's website. However I did not have the skill to be so meticulously precise with my brush tip and ended up simply splodging black paint all over the place. As a result I decided a painting retreat was the better part of valour on this occasion and settled for simply washing around the posts in order to provide the features with some shadow.
Finally I've finished undercoating another three of the 28mm Bakemono demons that come as part of the  "Bushido" Savage Wave Starter Set by "GCT Studios".

"I Am The Law!"

As a result of being rather disappointed with the first sculpt of Judge Joseph Dredd by "Mongoose Publishing", I've been plodding away on this alternative model for the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game", code MGP10155, for the past couple of weeks.

As with the other far-future lawmen I've painted I used "Coat D'Arms" Black for Dredd's uniform, and then Vallejo" Heavy Green with a "Citadel" Thrakka Green wash for his knee pads, boots, gloves, belt and elbow pads. His belt buckle, shoulder pad, badge and chain, and shoulder eagle were painted using "Vallejo" Gold and "Citadel" Devlan Mud.
In addition I've continued to 'pick away' at an objective marker I've glued together using all of the 10mm models from Code SFC7 Egg Cluster and five Eggs by "Pendraken Miniatures".

LRDG/SAS Dismounted Patrol - Part Two

This is the first of two 15mm "Battlefront Miniatures" stands I've painted over the past couple of weeks; both of which come from the "Flames Of War" blister BR758 LRDG/SAS Dismounted Patrol.
The majority of these soldiers were painted using "Vallejo" Heavy Grey and Heavy Sienna. Both these areas were then washed with either Umber Shade or "The Army Painter" Quickshade Strong Tone. The shorts were painted using "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey and a wash of "Citadel" Nuln Oil. Whilst the head cloth was first painted with "Vallejo" White before being washed with "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade. Finally their machine guns were painted using "Vallejo" Gunmetal Grey and Black Shade.

In addition I've started something of a 'factory line' of 6mm "GHQ" "Micro Armour" miniatures in order to 'batch-paint' approximately fifty figures from their Third World Warriors range.

Retained Knights - Part Two

These two 15mm "The Ion Age" miniatures come from the Prydian Army range selection IAF008 Retained Knight Post Charlie. They have been based upon a small "Battlefront Miniatures" stand as I want them to represent a Crimson Fist Space Marine Sergeant (i.e. Wildcard) when playing some 'Rogue Trader era' games of "Savage Worlds" using the "Science Fiction Companion" setting.
The models were therefore initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Blue before being washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil". Both their hands and the Sergeant's 'beaky' helmet were then picked out with "Vallejo" Heavy Red, before these areas were treated to a glaze of "Citadel" Bloodletter. Finally the models' Angis rifles were simply painted using the "Citadel" combination of Boltgun Metal with Nuln Oil.
As a complete contrast to the various 15mm models I've recently been painting, and the 6mm miniatures I presently preparing to paint, I've also started work on some of the 28mm Bakemono "Bushido" models from the Savage Wave Starter Set by "GCT Studios".

Muster First Patrol - Part Two

These two stands of 15mm "The Ion Age" miniatures are from the Prydian Army models found within code IAF022 Muster First Patrol. As these Muster Patrol Troopers are all armed with Moth Type 6 rifles, they've been based on a couple of medium bases by "Battlefront Miniatures" in order represent a small group of Guardsmen (i.e. Extras for the "Science-Fiction Companion" setting for the "Savage Worlds" core rules system).
In order to try and capture some of the feel of the 'Imperial Guard' from the 'Rogue Trader era' the infantrymen were all undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey, washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil and then had their shoulder pads, boots, and chest armour painted with "Coat D'Arms" Black. Any leg pouches and backpacks were painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and "The Army Painter" Quickshade Strong Tone. All the weapons were coated with "Citadel" Boltgun Metal and then washed with Nuln Oil. Their cap badges were painted using "Vallejo" Heavy Red and the "Citadel" glaze Bloodletter.

In the meantime I am trying to concentrate on yet another 28mm "Judge Dredd" miniature by "Mongoose Publishing"; this time the man himself, Judge Joseph Dredd.

Pendraken Miniatures Face Huggers

As something of a simple distraction, I've painted up all ten of my face Hugger models by "Pendraken Miniatures". These excellent metal second stage xenomorphs are available either as code SFC8 Face Huggers, or as part of the Alien Creatures Army Pack.

In my opinion however, the parasitoid models are somewhat too large in scale for the rest of the Alien creature figures in the Science Fiction range, and appear more in proportion to the 15mm Xenomorphs by "Ground Zero Games" I've recently painted.

All the miniatures have been painted using a simple application of "Vallejo" Heavy Ochre followed by an initial wash of "The Army Painter" Quickshade Ink Strong Tone, and then a wash of "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade.

Meanwhile I'm progressing with the remaining 15mm models I own from "Battlefront Miniatures" "Flames Of War" blister BR758 LRDG/SAS Dismounted Patrol.

Modern UK Infantrymen - Final Part

These five bases [n.b. only four pictured] of 6mm "GHQ" miniatures predominantly come from the "Micro Armour" blister N139 Modern UK Individual Infantrymen and are the final stands I need to complete a second Rifleman Section's Fire Team for my British Modern Army (loosely based upon the platoon structure found within "Battlefield Evolution: Modern Combat" by "Mongoose Publishing").

The models were undercoated with "Citadel" Knarloc Green and then washed using "The Army Painter" Quickshade Ink Strong Tone. They were then dry-brushed with more "Citadel" Knarloc Green before I 'picked out' the soldier's footwear, weapons, hands and faces with "Coat D'Arms" Black. The areas of skin were then painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone and "Citadel" Ogryn Flesh wash.
The Milan anti-tank rifle system model comes from the "Micro Armour" blister N140 Modern UK Individual Infantry Weapons. Whilst the four armoured personnel carriers are from code N515 AT-105 Saxon.
I'm currently painting up some simple MDF scenery to use as large air vents/sewer entrances for an upcoming 'Aliens verses The Imperium' project. I plan to play out the campaign using the "Science Fiction Companion" setting for "Savage Worlds" with a unit of Imperial Guard and Crimson Fists Space Marines investigating the disappearance of the inhabitants on the conquered colony LV-426. Hardly original but hopefully fun.

Heroclix Daredevil And Ironclad

This 28mm plastic "Heroclix" model of blind lawyer Matt Murdock, is taken from the Marvel Infinity Challenge range by "Wizkids" and is number 099.

One of the first models I recall obtaining for the New Jersey-based publisher's super-hero collectible miniatures game, Daredevil was entirely undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Red before being heavily washed with an old pot of "Citadel" Baal Red I wanted to use up. To make his specially-designed billy stick stand out a little (as ordinarily it's depicted being the same colour as the Marvel knight's costume), I gave it an additional wash of Agrax Earthshade.

Daredevil's face was painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone and "Citadel" Ogryn Flesh. I then 'highlighted' his cheeks, mouth, nose and chin with more "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone.

Even quicker to paint, but possibly one of the most disappointing miniatures in the "Heroclix" range, is this 28mm plastic model of U-Foe, Ironclad; which can be found as part of the Marvel Web of Spiderman range as number 016.

A simple "Citadel" Boltgun Metal undercoat with Nuln Oil wash completed this model's painting in just a few minutes. Unfortunately though the figure's head bears little resemblance to scientist Michael Steel's square head. Instead it's seemingly been sculpted to resemble that of the Russian X-Man Colossus. As a result I was tempted to try my hand at some green stuff sculpting, but didn't feel I had either the skill or patience to do the miniature justice; perhaps at some point I'll purchase a second one...

"It's Clobberin' Time!"

This 28mm plastic "Heroclix" model of Aunt Petunia's favourite nephew, is taken from the Marvel Clobberin' Time range by "Wizkids" and is number 48. Quite a few variants of Benjamin Jacob Grimm have now been produced for the super-hero collectible miniatures game but this is undoubtedly the best pose of one of the Fantastic Four's founding members.

In many ways this miniature should have been very simple (and quick) to paint. But unfortunately, having forgotten why I shelved my "Vallejo" Umber Shade wash last year, I ended up having to repaint Stan Lee's creation a few times before I was happy with it.

Unsurprisingly the model was undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Orange, before The Thing's shorts were painted with Heavy Blue and washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil. His flexible rock-like hide was then treated to the aforementioned coat of "Vallejo" Umber Shade, and disaster then repeatedly struck.

I chose to use Umber Shade as previously I've found the wash to simply provide a light, almost watery muddy brown shadow to a model, which lets the undercoat still show through; as opposed to "Citadel" Agrax Earthshade, which simply stains the model a deep dark brown. In addition, I've found the "Vallejo" shade can itself 'crack' when it pools, and that struck me as a useful side-effect if applied heavily all over the Thing's mutagenic skin.

Unfortunately what the Umber Shade also does is merrily flow everywhere else, all over a model. It simply doesn't seem to have the surface tension I've found inherent with "Citadel" inks, which holds the wash in place in the areas where I've applied it. As a result, every time I built up the shade pools (to create the cracking effect), Ben Grimm's shorts also quickly became contaminated with brown wash and had to be painted blue again; rather annoying.

As a complete aside though I would urge you to visit the "Rantings From Under The Wargames" blog for a totally different take on this "Heroclix" model, following the application of some serious green stuff. The initial posting can be found here: http://rantingsfromunderthewargamestable.wordpress.com/2014/02/08/superheroes-february-2014
I recently bought one of the Iron Brothers Twenty Man Troop Units from "Ramshackle Games" with the intention of painting them up as proxies for the Souther and Nort (using mole-mask heads) far-future soldiers found within the "2000AD" comic universe of "Rogue Trooper". This 28mm resin model has finally been undercoated "Vallejo" Heavy Grey in preparation for use as a test piece.

"Too Slow Lawbreaker!"

Having recently painted a handful of Street Judge models from the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" by "Mongoose Publishing", I was looking forward to painting the man himself, Judge Joseph Dredd. Unfortunately I've not had the best of times with model MGP10153 Judge Dredd 1, and whilst much of this frustration is doubtless down to my skills with a brush (or rather lack of), the sculpting on the model itself has also contributed to my dwindling enthusiasm for the project.

A simple enough colour scheme which annoyingly took several applications on certain parts of the model. Such as the somewhat crushed 'iron fist of Mega-City One' where I really struggled to find where the glove finished and the elbow pad started, and Dredd's red helmet trim, which seemed to simply disappear once it got round the back of his head. I even had to paint on the downward stripes on the helmet's gold badge as there appeared to be no raised detail on that particular area.

This has all lead to me rather disliking this figure, and as a result, for now at least, he's simply going to be one of my nameless Street Judge extras. Luckily I'm also painting the alternative "Mongoose Publishing" Judge Dredd sculpt (Code MGP10155), so, hopefully having given that model a better paintjob, I'll still be able to field the law's number one judge, jury and executioner as a wildcard (for "Savage Worlds").

Ultimately I can always use this model as the Chief Judge Fargo clone Judge Rico, who graduated from the Academy of Law in 2122 having actually been assessed by Joe Dredd himself; and that way I can field two Judge Dredds.

Having spent so long to finish this legendary senior Street Judge (and he was already half-painted at the start of the week) I've continued to 'potter' away at some more of my "Heroclix" plastic miniatures by "Wizkids", with a view to quickly finishing off three of these figures over the next few days.

"Judges Can Bleed Too"

Despite spending the past few days slowly progressing the small handful of the "Mongoose Publishing" Street Judge models I've set aside to paint this week, I've actually ended up finishing one of their figures from their 'Perps and Mercenaries' range first.

Sold under the "Judge Dredd Miniatures Game" brand as MGP10183 Blitzer, or alternatively as JD20114 Mobster Blitzer by "Warlord Games", this 28mm metal miniature was reasonably simple to paint, despite some minor casting flaws on the inside of his clenched fist.

The model was predominantly painted with "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey and a "Citadel" Nuln Oil wash. His flesh was painted using an undercoat of "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone, which was then washed with an old pot of "Citadel" Ogryn Flesh, before being highlighted with more "Vallejo" Heavy Skintone. The majority of the mobster's gun was simply painted with "Citadel" Boltgun Metal and (more) Nuln Oil. But in order to break it up somewhat, the firearm's grip and under-barrel were painted using "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and "The Army Painter" Quickshade Strong Tone.

Finally, and actually after some thought, I painted the model's hat using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Brown and (more of the) Quickshade Strong Tone ink by "The Army Painter". With this colour scheme in mind I now plan to later buy a second mobster miniature and paint it with an opposing brown suit with grey hat; the Blitzer brothers?
With a view to completing this week's painting goal of finishing five 25mm models, I've quickly based and undercoated a number of "Heroclix" plastic miniatures by "Wizkids". This is predominantly because I'm presently really struggling 'wrestling' with some of the casting/sculpting flaws I've encountered with the current batch of 'Justice Department' figures on my painting table. Therefore if my enthusiasm levels for the "Mongoose Publishing" models does fail, I can quickly complete these (essentially) single-colour super-heroes and arch-villains instead.

Ground Zero Games Xenomorphs - Final Part

I've completed another six stands of my 15mm alien models by "Ground Zero Games". I actually still have a handful of these miniatures left over, including two which I'm halfway through stripping down, having seriously over-painted them. However I think I can only get so many blog posts out of code SG15-X01 Xenomorphs, and the two model variants the plastic packet contains, so I don't plan to paint the last few LV-426 life-forms anytime soon.

All the miniatures have been painted using my 'quick and dirty' method of dry-brushing "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey over a "Coat D'Arms" Black undercoat before washing them with "Citadel" Nuln Oil. They were then super-glued to "Battlefront Miniatures" plastic bases.

Once dry I then built up the areas around the models' bases with green stuff in order to create a simple slope. If I've one complaint about these "Ground Zero Games" figures its their thick(ish) stands, and that one of the poses seems to suffer horribly from 'giddy alien syndrome'. That is the pose has a terrible lean to one side which when simply glued flat to a base makes the model appear to about to fall over to one side. Hardly the terrifying 'H.R. Giger image' I want them to somehow capture and one of the reasons I moved away from my original plan to base three models on a larger 40mm x 60mm rectangular base.

As a result many of the models have had a small blob of greenstuff placed beneath their base in order for me to 'straighten' their pose. This meant I then had to fill in the gap between the figures' stand and the "Battlefront Miniatures" base, as well as smooth out the join so the metal stand didn't 'jut out' from my basing later on.

As soon as the green stuff had hardened I then gave each base a coat of PVA glue and covered them in grit and sand (using a combination of model railway scenic ballast and other grainy basing materials I've collected over the years). I then painted the bases with "Coat D'Arms" Black before applying a heavy dry-brush of "Citadel" Doombull Brown, and then a lighter dry-brush of "Rakarth Flesh". Finally all the bases were washed with Agrax Earthshade and given another coat of PVA to seal everything together.

Before I applied the "Games Workshop" static grass, I tidied the bases up by applying two coats of "Coat D'Arms" Black along the edges and treating these areas to a coat of "Citadel" Colour Varnish.

Muster First Patrol - Part One

These two stands of 15mm "The Ion Age" miniatures are from a combination of Prydian Army models found within IAF021 Muster First Patrol Command and IAF022 Muster First Patrol. They've been based on a couple of small bases by "Battlefront Miniatures" in order to indicate that the first contains a Sergeant (i.e. a wildcard for the "Science-Fiction Companion" setting for the "Savage Worlds" core rules system) and the other a heavy weapon.

In order to try and tie these infantrymen in with the "Rogue Trader" feel of my previously painted Prydian Retained Knights, I've sought inspiration from the old "Warhammer 40K" Imperial Guard; back when they were metal miniatures sculpted by Mark Copplestone and came with separate plastic arms and weapon sprues.

As a result the Guardsmen were all undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Bluegrey, washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil and then had their shoulder pads, boots, and chest armour painted with "Coat D'Arms" Black. Any leg pouches and backpacks were painted using a combination of "Vallejo" Heavy Sienna and "The Army Painter" Quickshade Strong Tone. All the weapons were coated with "Citadel" Boltgun Metal and then washed with Nuln Oil. In line with the old Imperial Guard colour scheme, I painted the Sergeant's chest plate, helmet insignia and shoulder pad epaulettes with "Vallejo" Gold and more Quickshade Strong Tone by "The Army Painter".
I've still quite a few more of these 15mm Prydian Army models from "The Ion Age" left to paint. But am currently 'cracking on' and concentrating on five (more) 25mm "Judge Dredd" miniatures by "Mongoose Publishing". The Mobster Blitzer figure is proving a joy to paint, whilst his Judge Dredd (sold as JD20001 Judge Dredd 1 by "Warlord Games") counterpart has so many of the miscast and poor sculpting issues that have so frustrated me with previous 'Mongoose Matt' miniatures from this range.

Retained Knights - Part One

These three 15mm "The Ion Age" miniatures come from the Prydian Army range selection IAF008 Retained Knight Post Charlie and have been based upon a "Battlefront Miniatures" stand.

As with their less armoured Muster patrol brethren, I think these miniatures have something of a "Rogue Trader" feel to them, and as a result felt it would therefore be appropriate to paint them in the colours of the Space Marine Chapter that adorned the cover of the first "Warhammer 40K" rulebook, the Crimson Fists.

The models were therefore initially undercoated with "Vallejo" Heavy Blue before being washed with "Citadel" Nuln Oil". Their hands were then picked out with "Vallejo" Heavy Red, before these areas were treated to a glaze of "Citadel" Bloodletter. Finally the models' Angis rifles were simply painted using the "Citadel" combination of Boltgun Metal with Nuln Oil.
Despite being slightly distracted with these excellent Retained Knights, I'm still working on several of the Prydian Muster Infantrymen.
